Summer's over. At once peaceful Corvallis erupts into activity. Thousands of cars crowd into its narrow streets carrying occupants back to old niches, or leaving them alone in a new world where they must find their own places—make their own friends. For fraternity and sorority rush, it’s long days of making good impressions and wondering whether you should have smiled just then. When it’s all over, there’s a moment of doubt, (“Did I make the right decision?”). That vanishes as you sec someone cares—you have a home. 21

The start of another year . . . countless leaves covering everything with a yellow-brown blanket ... it seemed familiar if not ordinary. Then as the leaves were being cleared away; as the coffee dispensers in the commons chugged out their bitter conversation; as campus life got underway, a change took place. Whether the leaves had merely covered controversy or not, once they had disappeared, discussion grew. Grasping minds took the form of peace vigils on the Quad or graphite on “The Wall.” Liberalism began to show that it wasn’t completely suppressed as senior girls were given “open closing hours. The change that began this fall was not visualized in the buildings or trees of OSU because the breeze which scattered the leaves brought with it a realization of the problems of a 20th century world. The realization lingers now', in the air, chugged out of the coffee dispensers, but mostly in the minds of those who helped Oregon State grow. 23
