and noisemakers. Lead by the rally squad and band, Hallowe’en masked students wound through the streets of Corvallis toward a rally scheduled in front of the Coliseum. Beating pan lids and oil drums, enthusiastic students sprinted past the coaches at the rally on their way to the rook bonfire. After enjoying the spectacle of the fire, students returned to hear Dee Andros, Oregon State football coach, urge support for the team in their clash with Washington State’s Cougars. The Interfraternity Council sponsored Bike Race highlighted Saturday morning’s activities. Enthusiastic men and women on bicycles and tricycles careened around the quad sidewalks competing for over-all Homecoming prize points. 26

best 'dam” get-together ever It began last spring—the plans and the preparations. Chairman, Lance Hurt, selected his subchairmen who in turn selected their subchairmen and the real work began. But first a theme was needed—one short and catchy but providing adequate possibilities for house signs and buttons. “Dam the Cougars”—the committee liked it, the administration approved it, the students razzed it and some alums were shocked by it. But “Dam the Cougars” it was and despite last minute difficulties, plans and preparations materialized smoothly. The controversial Homecoming buttons were sold and the administration termed the 1965 Homecoming “one of the most successful ever.” Festivities began late Friday afternoon, October 29, with loudspeakers blaring and a crisp snap to the air. Students, alums, and townspeople flocked to see the living group house signs. Late nights, tears of frustration and mass panic had finished them. After a month of secrecy and rivalry, each group presented its paper and wood version of the theme. As night fell students gathered in front of living groups with floats, signs Everyone went to the fire hut the coaches.

homecoming marred by loss Winners of the house signs contest were announced at the afternoon game with WSU. Taking top honors in the men’s division was Alpha Kappa Lambda and Chi Omega won the women’s division for the second consecutive year. Sigma Chi won House Sign Sweep-stakes and Alpha Phi won the Most Enthusiastic living group trophy. Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Nu were announced winners of the Noise Parade. Also honored at the game were Sue Wiesner, the 1965 OSU Homecoming Queen, and her court: Jan Dalton. Diane Davies, Lynda Ellis, and Robin Holmes. A tour of Portland, television appearances and the Saturday night formal kept Queen Sue and her court busy. But the game didn’t bring honors to everyone. Cheers and prayers weren’t enough to combat WSU and Oregon State spirits were somewhat daunted by the 10 to 8 loss. Providing an enjoyable climax to a successful 1965 Homecoming was the Brothers Four concert and the Homecoming formal “Fantasia.”
