sharp shooters have fair season
OSU’S rifle team had another successful season. Led by Malcolm Newell and George Blackman, the Beavers placed third at the inter-collegiate sectional meet. Newell was second individually at the meet with a score of 294 out of a possible 300. The team scores shot at the sectional meet are used to determine the teams national ranking. Although Oregon State was only third in the sectional, they scored well enough to place high in the national standings. Last year’s team was fifth nationally.
Oregon State’s women’s team, the defending national champions, also shot well in the sectional meet. Led by Lauren Overholtzer and Marilee Case, the ladies placed second as they were edged out by the talented Alaskan team. Lauren Overholtzer was first among the women shooters at the meet. The women shooters shot an outstanding score at the sectional meet, and placed high nationally.

The promise forecast in late season non-conference games continued into regular season play. Playing their two top opponents, the Beavers whipped both Oregon and Washington Stats and after four games led the conference with a 3-1 mark. Then the roof fell in. Jim Jarvis broke his ankle and the Beavers, in a swing through Washington, dropped seven of their next eight games. Three final game defeats by Oregon ended a disappointing season and plummeted Oregon State into third place in the four team conference. Bon-ser continued his solid hitting, leading the team with a .367 average. Catcher Morrell Crary pushed across 18 runs in only 19 hits to lead the team in RBI’s. Wayne Swango was the most effective pitcher and along with Tom Hobbs pitched more than half of the Beavers’ Northern Division victories.
Crary, who led the league in RBI’s, and shortstop Ron Lucas, who was the Beavers’ second leading hitter at .333, made the ND All-Star team.

megale guides racket wins
Winning 18 of 26 matches in one of the hardest schedules of the school’s history was an impressive record. It was even more impressive as 1965 marked Don Megale’s first year as OSU’s tennis coach. Megale guided his Beavers through a season confronting nationally ranked Arizona and Arizona State and establishing the first OSU-Stanford dual meet. In an AAWU championship field of eight, Oregon State placed fifth. OSU’s sophomore team of Dave Shuford and Owen Lucey reached the quarterfinals to highlight the fine conference performance.
