This wasn ' t necessarily so, as there was a lot of hard work in¬ volved in making a good life for not only yourself but al¬ so your loved ones. Today, we, the leaders of tomorrow, also strive to build ourselves a satisfying life, filled with the pleasures and hardships of being your own leader; having your own Independence to declare, not only to your¬ self but to the world. 4 A. The dances, games, and just the plain excitement of being together with your friends was more than anyone could ask for; and yet, as soon as it all started, the fun seemed to gradually begin to drop off as we began to prepare for the day of graduation. We each will go separate ways, growing and striving to meet the challenges of life; and yet there will be a change, as we turn more to helping ourselves be better individuals and to finding our own personal goals in life. 6 1 I I wmf: ' mi ,Vj ' ‘„ ' ii ' .;!sji ., .r ' m :Wt ,. r ' A , the Grafitti Day Dance. Hotchkiss, member Friendships Grow With Changing Ways A new experiment was used this year for the ASB. The Senate; a new branch, was set up to find out whether the dividing of the ASB into more sections would give the students a better oppor¬ tunity to express their wishes and to be able to do more things. This proved to be a successful plan and will continue on through next year. The ASB is important to the student-body because it is the link between the faculty, students and the administra¬ tion. It also sponsors the memories for many Orange Glen students in the form of the Yearbook and the News¬ paper; both of which are partly funded by the ASB. H ■ . ' I ri ' S r { mm m .ijv i A. This provided the students with free admission to all of the football games, dances and sporting ac¬ tivities. It also sup¬ plied students with a free yearbook at the end of the year. Thanks to the ASB, Orange Glen is a more pleasant place to get an education. 23 I The Key Club was again ac¬ tive this year by serving the community and helping out in school events. Some of these events were: driving cars for the Christmas parade, helping as guides for back to school night, and participating in the White Cane sales sponsored by the Lions Club. The club is ad¬ vised by Mr. Fred Georggin and presided over by Gary Olvaney. The Sweetheart for this year was Jean McNutt. Cheerful and enthusiastic were the key words for describing the Deltons this year. The various funds for the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and the Children ' s Christ¬ mas party were raised by selling Valo-grams and working during the wrestling matches. Some of the events participated in were the graduation and Baccalaureate ceremonies, and Back-to- School night. The group is limited to juniors and sen¬ iors and is presided over by Beverly Elrod. With a back field of Jim Colvin, David LaPlante, Tommy Childs and Mike Schryver, the Pats were strong enough to keep a game close offensively. Defense was strong with a line that always gave pressure and a secondary that was tough. With West, Childs, Eddins and Greenlee, the opponents never enjoyed throwing the ball. Going into league play the Pats were 1-1. After dropping their first game to rival Escondido, 28-6, the Pats continued to drop the next three to San Marcos, 28-41; Vista, 6-28; and Oceanside, 39-3. Then, after the burying of the ’’old spirit” the Pats buried San Pasqual, 37-17; tied Carlsbad 14-14; and took a tough Fallbrook team, 14-8, to end the best season in three years for the varsity squad. ifi-, I 54 A. Under the guidance of Coaches Jerry Fenton and Paul Moyneur, the team managed to have the second leading offense in the league with 162 points and 2,498 total yards. The offense was lead by yard-gaining running backs, Ron Day, Mark Skomol, Rick banning and David Lawson. Quar¬ ter-Back Ron Parker did a fine job behind the protection of lineman Chris Hudson and Scott Paradise. The defense did not put in as good a showing as the offense, but they did do a fine job in stopping San Marcos, Carlsbad and Fallbrook in league games, and Point Loma in a practice game. The Patriots domi¬ nated the game with a 20-6 win. From the beginning the Freshmen were plagued by tough breaks when one of the starting linemen moved away and Doug Disney was put out for the season with a leg injury. However, the Patriots made it through the season with a strong offensive line led by Greg West and Jack Domin¬ guez, followed by receivers Joe Early and Wayne Hay. Some of the reasons for their success were pitchers David Lawson and Albert Snow. The best hitting came from David Lawson, Larry San¬ ford, Joe Danna, Jim Ferrin, and Bobby Lemus. The Freshman baseball team started their season the wrong way by losing two of their first three games. But the mighty frosh never gave up through-out the sea¬ son. Greg West did a fine job pitching, and also came through with a strong batting average for the patriots. Also strong bat swings for the freshmen were Joe Val¬ entine and Mike Book. Coaching the first year men was Mark Karges and his assistant Dickie Britian, who is a 1968 graduate of Orange Glen. The Pats started the season slowly because of a lack of a well-rounded catching ro¬ tation. Larry Sanfor d was brought down from the var¬ sity to catch and proved to be very helpful. Help also came from Don Reiker and Mike Rutledge. V 74 A. Daryl Lantz practices his fielding. B. The two people who handled the coaching for J. V. and Varsity were Mr. Georgia and Ms. Maloney. For Varsity defensively, the strongest and most consistent player was third baseman Olga Hernandez; and offen¬ sively, the big stick at the plate was Lori Becker, batting .667 at mid¬ season. j i 105 Girls Basketball Shows Promise The Varsity basketball pro¬ gram is under the super¬ vision of Nancy Shields. The girls suffered an early season loss against Ocean- side but coach Shields feels that they are a strong and promising team. There are fourteen players on the girls J.V. basketball team. You ve guided it along life s 5 trails and paths and into new areas of adventure. It ' s had its good times and its bad and it has many scratches and nicks to show both. And yet you kind of like it; it ' s all yours, some¬ thing that no one can take away. It shows 12 years of hard work and determination, to have finally reached the top - as far as you can possibly go being a child. j The years now will still go up hill, and there will be good and bad times but, none shared with such a multitude of friends and acquaintances or with the childlike image that you ' ve carried with you through your days of elementary school, junior high and high school. No more days to be spent walking down the long hall at each break, or through the rain on a cold day. None spent sneaking off for a hamburger at lunch. And none spent seeing friends and people to talk over the date you had last night or how your classes are going. Being a senior means being able to pass familiar places at school and see them in a new light. And being able to watch a football game with the enthusiasm of knowing most of the guys on team. Being a senior is a special chance to show off all you know, or have been taught down through your years. And finally being a senior means saying good-bye to friends that say they ' ll write when you leave for college but you know they never will. And saying good-bye to teachers that say to come back and see them but you know you never will. And then it means saying good-bye to a school you never thought you ' d miss. It seems that all we could think about was either the beach and surfing, or the snow and ski¬ ing, depending whether we were a winter or summer per¬ son. And yet, now that our high school days have ended, we will reminisce about sitting in the good old school rooms,” talking and yes, learning too. Although we may not have realized it then, this learning of new ideas and techniques helped to form us as separate individuals; ready to conquer any trouble we may have in our future lives ahead. A. Becoming an upperclassman is a big step in the life of an stu¬ dent. Along with the traditional signs of growing up such as receivinga driver ' s license, taking history classes, and at¬ tending the prom, anew option was given to Juniors. Co-edu¬ cational volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, paddle-ball and even football were included in the regular curriculum. The pro¬ gram was ten weeks underway when Physical Education in¬ structor, Ms. Shields, made these comments: The co-ed program has proved very successful. The other teachers and I are looking for new ways to make the program even more attractive because it is very healthy for boys and girls to get along in a competitive way. I predict that within two or three years co-educational classes will be offered to all grades.” Sports was not the only area that took a change for the better. Students Explore Activities Outside activities occupy more of our time during our years in school. And along with the many diversified interests in High School there are many diversified outside activities to occupy our time. During the warm summer months and the California spring, it is not unusual to find many friends along Moonlight, Solana, or Torry Pines or many of the other beaches along the southern California shore line. During the fall and winter months many people swarm to Palo- mar and the outlying areas to romp in the snow. And year around it is possible to find motorcycles and dune buggies being loaded in the back of a truck in preparation for a trip to the dessert. When it is not possible to travel to the mountains, desert, or beach areas, a quick cruise down Valley Parkway on Friday or Saturday night is an easy way to make new friends and see alot of old ones. The Mat Pats had to be judged in front of a board which consisted of wrestlers, coaches, Mrs. Boldt (head supervisor) and Mr. See. The ten girls that won the title of ’’Mat Pats” then went on to make their uniforms. These girls along with the cheerleaders, helped induce some spirit and excitement to the wrestling matches and tournaments. A. Suddenly you ' re on your own No worrying, no caring. That far away look in your eyes. You ' ve come to your own secret place; Green grass meets waters blue. You sit down with a smile Reminiscing days gone-by, recalling friends so true. Looking out upon the water Seeing clearly seeing straight Wondering what will become After all your work is complete And your day is done. Carefully now, without interruptions You think of the world at past. Examining each circumstance As if it were your last. Time breaks in upon your thoughts Disspelling your reverie. Gladly you embrace the day Knowing the strength and wisdom of memory. By Tamara L. Howard 204 IT ■ ' •■■- ' ft- ' t Wk ■ Sue Adams shows a friend from Escondido H. S. the surroundings on campus. B. Our high school years--the endless days and nights of homework and studying, the thrill of a good football game, and the activities that went on both in and out of school will always be cher¬ ished as our own little ’’treasures” of our youth. Let us all remember that just because one year is over and the book has come to an end for this year, there are and always will be new additions to add to our own book of life and these are ours to keep for¬ ever. A dream of being the Editor of my class yearbook; and sharing a part in creating memories. I would also like to express my thanks to Mr. Galen Kuehnast- (Yearbook Advisor), for the faith and trust he had in my work and in order to see it through. Without your help and support 1 wouldn’t have been able to do it. Looking back on these past four years, I realize I have learned things that will be forever valuable to me. I will always remember with fondness the teachers and friends who helped me along the way. I wish all of my graduating class, and the graduates of to¬ morrow, happiness and success in the future. May every¬ one seek and find the beautiful things in life. Thank You CCcL 1975-76 Torch Editor ' ■ft ' -iy.
