j.V. Football I. V. Rebuilds After Suffering The Patriot J.V. football squad, The Patriot defense was very David Parker and lVlr. Jerry Fen- well, especially in the San ton, had a disappointing but spirited season . The Pats were hampered by being able to play just one good half of football each game. Pasqual and Escondido games The defense was led by line- backers Scott Colbertson and Birt Straw. Colbertson led all tacklers and had exceptionally fine games against Carlsbad and The offense was lead by the hard running of Dave LaPlante and the passing arm of Bob Greenle.With Greenle passing to his leading receiver, Jim Nlorasco, and La Plante running, the Pats were able to mount fine drives, but failed at putting points on the board. Escondido. Straw was a very sure tackler and seemed to be wherever the ball was . those who were on this year's squad . A-Paul Eddins picks up Ocenside fumble. B-Dave Sanders, Paul Eddins bring down Pirate runner. C-New head coaches show enthusiasm. .u . M... under new head coaches IVlr, spirited and held their opponents All in all, it was a year of re- building forthe J .V. Varsity Football Varsity Finishes 3-9 Season 0 .G.'s varsity football ended the season winning three out of nine games, two of them league games . Although the Patriots lacked the size and talent that was needed to be a top contender, determination and pride were factors that held the Patriots together. The first non-league game was against Hilltop. The Pats were edged, the score being 12-6. Next, the Pats met the lVlontogomery Aztecs on their home field . They trounced them 21-7 . However, the Patriots fell to Vista in the league opener 21-0 . The following week, they confronted the rugged Oceanside Pirates . Although the Pats outplayed and dominated the Pirates in every cat- egory, they lost 6-7, over a controversial play. lt envolved a quar- terback-sneak by John Veach . Although the films showed Veach clearly in the end-zone, the referees, out of position, failed to see the play. The Pats downed the Eagles 29-13, but lost to Carlsbad 21-14 on Dad's Night. They came back, wounding the Warriors 42-20 , In Super-Bowl Vll, they lost to Escondido 24-0 . The Pats also failed to score in the Homecoming game against San lVlarcos. The score on the final game being 29-0 .
