On the local, state and national level responsible citizens were urged to TALK and to LISTEN: TALK AND LISTEN! Your school has not failed to take up this challenge. This has been a year in which substantial advances have been made in attempts to bridge the “Communication gap” between all segments of the Orange Glen High School community. Student, faculty and parent views have been received enthusiastically and I feel confident that future school planning will reflect these responsible views. I complement the Associated Student Body and in particular the class of 1970, for the part each has played in this important endeavor. P. V. Ross, Principal The future of man will be much different due to the success of the moon shots which took place this year. We all know of the millions of dollars which were expended to assure the success of space flight, and the on going research to determine the safety of man and of his capabilities to live on the moon. It is this research which requires some reflective thought on man’s ability to exist on planet earth. This year seems to have been one when the most popular, if not demanded, course of action was to “do your thing.” As with most terms in the slang idiom, “doing your thing” is so broad in meaning that it defies any specific definition. The time was right for actions encompassing the total spectrum of values from worthless actions to worthwhile actions, most of which were passed off and accepted as “doing our thing.” It seemed as though every cult, political group and student group had to do something even if it was wrong. In the interest of the total society and its survival, the need for a more serious consideration of values is mandatory. Too many people overreact to microscopic grievances in such a manner as to ignore the microscopic consequences. I would submit that all of us learn the differences in Liberty, Liberalism and Libertinism in order to preserve a civilized society. Mr. David Larson Vice Principal 56 ADMINISTRATORS Mr. W. P. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK In the season opener Henry Paredes, an All- Avocado League interior lineman, threw the Clairemont quarterback for numerous losses. He not only played a great game defensively but opened holes for the backs offensively. Henry “The Bear” blows over two would-be tacklers. Chris Mouneur showed his All-League abilities against the Pirates. He not only threw the ball well, he also was a most outstanding running quarterback in this as well as other league games. His 101 yards rushing and over 200 yards total offensively led the Pats to a near win against Oceanside. Out-weighed by 75 pounds, Rob Carter held two-year all-league tackle Garcia to no tackles, against Fallbrook. He not only held Garcia to possibly his worst night but blocked well and gave excellent protection for passer Chris. All League linebacker Rick Whyte frustrated the Knights offense continually through the game against San Marcos. He also rushed for an amazingly hard fought 104 yards from the fullback position. One of the few bright spots in the Super Bowl, Ron Crouch held All C.I.F. split end Rex Hollowy to his worst night in two years. The 5’ 8” defensive back stopped Holloway cold to no receptions the entire night. 74 Steve Robbins, O.G.’s leading pass receiver, led the way homecoming night against the Paway Titans. His diving catches and leaping touchdown reception gave the Pats a sure victory for the homecoming bout. Chris demonstrates how to pose for a T. A. shot. Fleet-footed Calvin Smith ran wild against the Vista Panthers for a close victory, 19-13. On romps of 40 and 70 yard gainers, he earned a reputation as a break away back with moves and speed—a threat to any team. Although the Patriots lost a hard- fought game to Carlsbad, 19-13, a fine example of the “never-say- die” attitude was revealed by George Allen. He rushed for 90 surprising yards and ripped the Lancers with a great exposition of defensive football. The versatile Rick Whyte once again was the Player of the Week in the final victorious game against San Dieguito. He not only rushed for over 80 yards but took the option from Moyneur and passed for two touchdowns. 75 (Right) Clairemont ball carrier is gang-tackled by Patriots Ken Hugins (43), Henry Paredes, Tom Silsby (77) and Dennis Huff (44). With such a large turnout of freshman boys for football, this year they were divided into a lightweight team and a heavyweight team. Coaches Jackson and Woods drilled the heavyweights while Coaches Kinch and Woodard guided the lightweights. Playing such big schools as University and Oceanside, both our freshman teams showed the potential of keeping O.G. a winning football school in future years. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1969-1970 basketball season drew to a close with as much excitement as it had started. Records were broken and jinxes fell during this 15-11 season. After splitting the non-league games 5-5, our Patriot team finished the first round of Avocado League play by 6 wins and two close heartbreakers—Oceanside and San Marcos by two. During the second round, Coach Wetzell’s team overcame a cross-town jinx by walloping the Escondido Cougars in their own gym for the first time. Then, coming off with their seasons best defensive effort, a 65-39 win over San Dieguito, the Pats traveled to Oceanside only to be frustrated by another two point loss. The toll of the long season began to show, and with the loss of junior center Bruce Judson and senior guard Greg Price, our varsity dropped two of their final three games to finish league with 10-6 mark. All in all, the Patriot fans saw many great games. Anyone who saw the look on Derek Allister’s face after he scored 26 points to help beat his former high school, Escondido; or saw the game where Greg Price out-scored the San Diego-CIF’s best-ever scorer; or was amazed by the passing and unselfishness of Jim Forge; or saw Chris Moyneur collect two records of 227 defensive rebounds in a season and 15 field goals in a game, would have to admit this 1969-1970 basketball season was one of O.G.’s greatest. Varsity Basketball, L. to R., Coach Wetzell, Dave Stacey, Linn Wilde, Jim Forge, Mark Higgins, Brian Mack, Brucejudson, Tom Trogdon, Chris Moyneur, Derek Allister, Greg Price, Dennis Huff, Larry Gibson, Jerry Kiley, Chris Fleck (mgr.), Kerry Goldman (mgr.) • y . ttSo 1 • - a Senior guard Greg Price was always a threat to score from anywhere on the court. When Greg got hot there was no stopping his jumpshot from the outside. It seems like Orange Glen High has a good basketball team every year. One big reason is the coach, Bill Wetzell. Shown here is Coach and back-up guard Dave Stacy. Below, Chris Moyneur jumps against Kearney opponent. - II Captain Chris Moyneur could always be counted on to get the rebounds and score during clutch situations as he does here against El Capitan. ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR COACH WETZELL Always showing his ball handling abilities and high- percentage shooting, junior guard Dennis Huff was a vital part of this year’s Patriot basketball team. Chris Moyneur pulls down a rebound during a game that saw the Pats trounce Escondido 76- 61 and hand them their twelfth consecutive loss of the season. Number 30 is guard and playmaker, Jim Forge. Escondido’s Roger Wright grabs a rebound in the early part of the Cougar-Patriot game as Pat forwards Chris Moyneur (32) and Derek Allister (42) and Cougar guard Bill Holterhaus look on. Derek Allister swishes a twenty footer against the Panthers. Forward Chris Moyneur guns in two after getting a pass from Dave Stacy (12). Awaiting a possible rebound is center Brucejudson (44). Above: Coach Wetzell liked what he saw here against Vista. Below: 6’5” Brucejudson draws a foul from an El Capitan player while laying in two points. Derek Allister and Chris Moyneur can be seen getting rebound position. Below left: Our Patriot defense caused the Cougars to commit many costly turnovers. Cocaptain Chris was in action against A perfect example of the fast-break—Greg Price gets an assist from Jim Forge. Chris Moyneur is seen ready for a possible pass or rebound. HHHH Bruce Judson really came alive during the second round of play. Besides picking up 135 defensive rebounds, he was also on the offensive boards. Here, Bruce tips in a two pointer. One of the most improved players on this year’s Patriot team was senior guard Jim Forge. Jim was always exciting the crowd with a spectacular assist or a quick steal and layup. scoring points and picking up rebounds - J.V. LEADS LEAGUE O.G. Darrell Kelly earned Most Valuable Player for his consistant scoring and rebounding ability. When Doug or Darrell weren’t scoring, Steve Edgington took up the slack. Guards Mike LeBlanc and Kim Redding used their ball handling ability to work the ball inside. For coach Dixon, it was a rewarding year. It will be more of a reward in the future when these fine young men compete on the J.V. and varsity levels. Frank Dixon John Woods took over the wrestling team for the first time this year. The year of 1969-70 in the Girls’ Athletic Association was an outstanding year. It gave each girl the opportunity to participate in the sport of her choice. The girls who participated showed an avid interest in each activity. The year started out with tennis. Coached by Miss Maloney, the netters came out with seven wins and only one loss. Another sport which brought out many girls was volleyball. The girls found themselves traveling all over North County promoting spirit and winning for Orange G ' en. Hockey always generates a lot of enthusiasm. The team enjoyed their annual Hockey Cline which was held at O. G. for the first time. All the sports always promotes a great deal of excitement and this year was no exception. Due to the efforts of all involved, the girls at Orange Glen High School have something to be proud of. To those girls we owe a great deal of thanks. This includes Escondido, which they pounded a 12-2 win over. The only loss of the season was to Bishop, an all girl school in La Jolla. The most improved girl of the sport was Patti Wade and the most valuable was voted as Chris Dematteis. It was an event that had been long awaited. The program started with registration at 8:30 at 9 the general meeting in the gym. Following was the clinic instruction by members of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Association, in which the girls learned different skills for their respective positions. After lunch the members of the Field Hockey Association selected the members for the All Star teams, and finally the All Star game. All in all this year’s clinic was a memorable one. The girls are looking forward to next year’s clinic, hopefully at Fallbrook. Orange Glen’s G.A.A. hockey team had a great season, and the annual Pizza party was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to our Hockey coach Mrs. Freitas for her faith in the team. Lynn, Camille and Janice registered the Hockey players as they arrived. June Miller (center) was selected for the All Star Team, at the clinic. Mrs. Freitas, Kathy and Carol look on as Ivie Lewis gives pointers on the game. O.G. HOCKEY CLINIC Athlete of the year, Chris Moyneu is probably one of the most outstanding athletes Orange Glen will ever know. As a freshman, Chris played football and basketball. As a Sophomore he played J.V. football and varsity basketball and baseball. His junior and senior years he played varsity basketball and football. In football this year, Captain Chris led the Patriots to a winning season. With a total of 1,448 yards, he ran for 481 yards and passed for 967 yards. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry and 11 yards per pass completion. He made 6 touchdown and passed for 9 others. He made 8 extra point attempts with a total of 44 points for the season. Only 5 of his passes were intercepted and as a defensive back he intercepted 4 himself. Proving himself to be most valuable, out of 9 games he was player of the week twice. In basketball Chris was again outstanding. In three years in playing varsity, he made a total of 1,118 points, Number 33. Number 12. ATHLETE of the YEAR second only to Gene Chaffin in the school’s history. This year Chris shot 39% from the floor. He broke Mike Gillett’s school record with 15 goals in one game. Shooting 71 % from the free throw line he made 114 out of 160 free throw attempts. Averaging 17.3 points per game he gained a total of 416 points this season. He led the team with 57 assists and holds the school record of 227 defensive rebounds in a season. As captian and most valuable, Chris led the Pats to another winning season. p i mm ACTIVITIES 113 Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. —Emerson p.K ' mil . • : : . t . - jm $ r .v ■ ■ sOSfcJ ' ■_ : ,.1 K • r . At the end of every performance there were standing ovations, and the whole campus was buzzing about some of the funniest performances yet seen at Orange Glen High. Especially remembered were Mark Longacre, as George Plew the “hair¬ brained” lawyer, Robert Quinn as Luigi Lanconi, the old Italian father. Tom Peterson as Lucifer from “down there,’’Rocky Phillips as Mr. Morlock, the salty old business tycoon who learned that kindness and love come late for some of us, and Darrel Dietz as Mort Lively, the ad-libbing hilarious undertaker. A final touch of humor was added with the play literally ending out in the audience. There were characters everywhere in one of the wildest sequences ever, and the spectators weren’t sure as to who were the performers and who were not. Class of ’70, your play was one of the best, and it will long be remembered for years to come. Mr. Morlock, do you taste something funny? “The final Reward” If I hadda my cleaver, I’da chop off your head. Really, George, haven’t you gone far enough? No, you won’t go there Mr. Morlock. 123 REST ASSURED Mark Longacre checks “down below.’ Napa—Sonoma! Whatsa wrong with Pappa? Lucifer comes for Mr. Morlock. Luigi Lanconi—Hesa cutta the meat. The House on Whaleshead Rock THE HOUSE ON WHALESHEAD ROCK, was performed for student assemblies on March fifth and sixth. The story revolved around a haunted house, a head in a box, a lively mummy, and three escaped convicts, three teeny-boppers and their finishing school chaperone. Then after thrills, spills, gunfire and much more laughter, everything worked in the end. After all, you KNOW that there is no such thing as haunted houses, don’t you? Sue, it’s only a yearbook layout. Everyone listens when Gary talks, (at least he hopes so) Here we are the great 1970 TORCH STAFF! 9 9 EPILOGUE With the publishing of another TORCH, another Yearbook staff realizes the chaos and confusion that comes with it. Trying to meet deadlines, doing layouts, scheduling pictures, typing up copy and writing captions all are part of the work put into a yearbook. The penalty of procrastination is felt by all, along with the last minute hassle to meet the deadline. All those supposedly wonderful times of a dedicated staff member, of staying after school and up late at night, I’m sure will never be forgotten. Working on a yearbook staff is quite an experience and this year was no different. Much hard work and thought has gone into this year’s annual and I’m sure the whole staff felt it was worth while when they saw their Work published. I want to thank the 1970 TORCH Staff for the great job they have done, and naturally I feel, have published the best yearbook Orange Glen has seen. Though many times I have come out of sixth period exasperated, I want the staff to know I have thoroughly enjoyed being Editor-in- Chief this year. Ruth Roberts Looking over all the great ideas in this year’s TORCH. HAPPINESS to the 1970 TORCH STAFF is Running into another person’s section and ending up with two 68’s and 69’s. Having the ad pictures go through the wash with your pants. Copying your layouts over six times. Losing 100 Freshman pictures. Getting a Senior picture two days after the deadline. Running back and forth between K1 and K5. Staying up until 1 a.m. doing your layouts to meet the deadline. Staying after school till 6:30 p.m. to meet your deadline and then being able to go right to the Basketball game. Typing three copies and finding you have the carbons in backwards. Scheduling the hockey team and hand corps pictures and then not having a photographer show up. Misplacing the Varsity Basketball Team picture. Missing three deadlines. “Starting the year $600 in debt and ending the year $3,000 in debt.” Going back five times to sell an ad and then they don’t want one. Numbering 500 Freshman pictures wrong. Leaving a debt for next year’s staff. Identifying 300 people on a 2” by 2” picture. All set up to type and find you’re on a typewriter with no letters. Showing up to take an ad picture and find out you’re at the wrong place. Yearbook is happiness. 175 SENIOR INDEX AG AN, STEVE Auto Club ALBRIGHT, DERON ALDRIDGE, BRUCE WARREN ALLISTER, DEREK V.
