This was Jerry's tirst experiencewith student government. However, he also served as president of the Key Club. Varsity football, track and baseball are among the sports Jerry has taken part in. 1967 - 1968 In addition to being Orange Glen's A.S.B. President, Paul Moyneur was also active in other areas of govern- ment. He was a delegate to Boy's State and a member of Key Club. Paul was one of the twenty semi- finalists in the state for the Senate Youth Program in Washington, D.C. Paul also participated in baseball and basketball along with being quarter- back onthe undefeated varsity foot- ball team of 1967-1968. Datmots Jerry Ferrara served as Orange Glen's Associated Student Body Treasurer for the 1967-1968 term. In addition, he belonged to the Key Club and Lettermen's Club. On the C.I.F. winning football team, Jerry was halfback. Track was also one of Jerry's sport activities. Next year Jerry plans to go on to college. Teaching is Jerry's vocational goal. Orange Glen's Associated Student Body Secretary was Susan Cadwall- ader. Susan also served on the 1966- 1967 cabinet. During Susan's four years at Orange Glen, she was a member of Deltons, C.S.F.,G.A.A. and Spanish club. Next year Sue plans on going to Palomar College and majoring in dietetics or speech therapy. The represent- atives are nominated by the faculty. The nominations are based on four important qualities: lj He or she should show potential leadership. 2.1 He or she should have the ability to get along with others and an interest in government and in hislher community. 3.j He or she must have qualities of honesty and courage. 4.1 He or she should be in the upper third of hisfher class scholastically. The purpose of Boy's and Girl,s State is teaching the students the role each citizen must play under our system of government. Girl's State was held on the University of California, Davis campus. The Sacramento Fairgrounds was the meeting place of Boy's State. Both Sandra and Paul wish more students could have the opportunity of participating in Girl's or Boy's State. 'The Datmots ave ARRIVGO' This has been a familiar slogan in the Escondido community during this year.- -A highly successful Accreditation Report by the Western Association of School and Colleges, excellent academic achievement by students, vigorous participation in responsible student governmentg and rewarding exper- iences in co-curricular activities. All of this is very exciting and, indeed, important however, I submit that this 'com- ing of age' is most importantly expressed by a new sophistication which exemplifies the graduates of the class of 1968. Here and elsewhere we have been seeing an ever increas- g ing interest among students to become more directly involved in the operation of programs designed to meet student needs - and this is good! Excellent student talent, good judg- ment, and an abundance of genuine enthusiasm during the past four years have soundly established Orange Glen High School as a leading secondary school in this county. On behalf of the staff may I offer sincere congratulations and best wishes for a happy and successful future. We appreciate the part each of you has played in enhancing the image of the Patriots. Quade District Superin tendent Dear Students, Many will remember the school year 1967-68 as the year when Orange Glen High really came into its own. As I write this brief message to the students of Orange Glen High for publication in the 1968 school annual, only a few short days have passed since the Patriots claimed the County Conference C.I.F. title in football and completed an un- beaten and untied football schedule -- a truly remarkable accomplishment for a high school which first came into being in the fall of 1962. This is not the first nor will it be the last of the outstanding awards to be won by the students of Orange Glen High School. These will continue in the field of the academics, in athletics, in music, in drama and in every other area of student activity so long as we have teachers and students of sincere dedication who are willing to make the necessary self-sacrifice for a worthy cause. Many members of this year's senior class have demonstrated their complete dedi- cation by their many accomplishments. Their example has been a fine one for all students to follow in the future. Sincerely, W! G. w. Quatre District Superintendent SCHOOL BOARD LEFT TO RIGHT: Ward C. Sangren, Willlkzm IVL Kennedy, Wilber F1 Bradley, Michael C OWIaIley, Chester E. Galyean. ,,,r Q ifmaeq it This was the year of the happening, and opportunity. Many great things happened at Orange Glen which have affected all of us in some way. The honor and pride brought to Orange Glen by an un- defeated football team is a legacy which will long be remembered by all students and staff members. More im- portant, was the quality of maturation and sportsmanship of the gentlemen who brought this conference champion- ship to Orange Glen. It is a tribute to the characteristics which are desirable and typical of most Orange Glen students: I think the ambitious efforts of our ASB officers, repre- sentatives and campus clubs are to be commended! Their efforts have proven that a greater involvement stimulates a greater interest in all activities. In any given year, the opportunities for individual growth and Worth are many. I know that great strides have been made by many students in the quiet areas of academic awareness, and these accomplishments will manifest them- selves three fold in the future. Because we lose forever the chance to re-live any year, we must all ask ourselves - have I made the most of my opportunities? Mr. David L. Larson Vice Principal oM 'fF ,rg wg. I If 'S r 1, fe, YF' Dr. Helen Roberts Head Counselor After being involved in teaching and counseling for forty-two years, Dr. Helen Roberts says, Orange Glen is the 'Bestf and I am very proud of all our winning teams! Dr. Roberts has been at Orange Glen for the past four years and has played a very valuable role as the head counselor. Almost everyone seeks Dr. Roberts help at least once, if not twenty times, during their four years. As the Head Counselor, Dr. Roberts patiently irons out students schedules or any other stu- dent school problems, as well as, listening to personal problems, dutifully administers tests, and sponsors the California Scholarship Feder- ation with Mr. Brown. Dr. Roberts is especially well-known among the Seniors. Constantly advising the graduating class on professions and colleges, she tries to make the students decisions easier by arranging college representatives to speak to interested and questioning groups of Seniors. The Senior Bullentin is one of Dr. Roberts best ways to keep in contact with the graduating class. Her interest doesn't stop at college bound students, she enjoys helping anyone, no matter where he is headed after Orange Glen. Her only regret is that she can't meet and get to know every- one on campus. One of the main highlights of 1967-68 for Dr. Roberts, was her visit to Annapolis. She found that the students there were most successful, willing to conform and to study hard. She also noted that three of Orange Glen's alumni were doing well. As everyone can see, Dr. Roberts does play a very important part in Orange Glen's affairs. On behalf of the students, we want to say - Thank-you for everything! Q I v e - , - ,ffff fx Cumzlculum Continues to lmpnove Orange Glen High School has continued to excel in many aspects of its educational program. The students and staff have shared in bringing honor and additional recognition to the already well-recognized school. This, I am sure will continue to accelerate because of the interest, enthusiasm and perseveranceof the entire school popu- lation. As an addition to the academic program, we are looking forward, with excitement, to the full development of the potenti- alities of Instructional Television at Orange Glen High School. With the completion of the installation of the Master Antenna System, with amplification and redistri- abution capabilities, the reception of a wide variety of educational programs should be realized. This system will make possible the development of locally pro- duced programs, the taping and redistri- bution of well-planned programs eminating over KEBS Channel 79515, as well as Chan- nels 6, 8 and IO. The use of this system will be as versatile and as all encompassing as the personnel associated with it. We expect great educational accomplishments from it. We are pleased that the Distributive Edu- W- P- Radney cation work experience program at Orange Glen High School is off to such a fine start. We are hopeful that it will be ex- panded to include more students. This program, we feel, has many fine aspects which are extremely valuable to our stu- dents as they plan for their respective vocations or careers. A ssistant S uperintenden t Director of Curriculum Efforts will continue to be made in expanding the area of vocational education offerings and opportunities at Orange Glen High School. This could be in the field of Electronics, longer periods of time for Automotive Mechanics, and an extension of Data Processing. Classes in Special Education have started this year for 9th and 10th graders and will be expanded to include I lth graders this coming year. This special program will, I am sure, continue to improve in order to meet the needs of those eligible students attending Orange Glen High School. Expansion of the programs for the mentally gifted students will continue to receive special attention and consideration as we look and plan for the future. We certainly desire that all students avail themselves of the many and varied opportunities offered by Orange Glen High School for developing the capabilities of each to the maximum. QW? r W. P. Radney Assistant Superintendent .gil CUI2l2lCLllUm Students and Faculty of Or- ange Glen High School have seen many revisions and numerous improvements in curriculum. We have also witnessed a fabulous improve- ment in school spirit, team ability, and school life in gen- eral. In the process of student training there seems to be a time to work and a time to play. Work is certainly prac- ticed in the first eight grades. The student is taught to solve his own problems and in doing so he learns to reason. The power to solve one's own problems is a worthy accom- plishment in itself. There is also a certain element of enjoyment. The pupils learn to use their hands in the lovely items such as pottery, sculp- ture, papier mache articles, and even sandals. Crafts is an entertaining class as well as educational. Physical Education Class- es provide a healthy environ- ment for all students during high school. P.E. classes are also known as literal torture brought on by utter exhaus- tion. Our natural instincts tell us that a person is almost meaningless without a proper amount of effective communication. As a person progresses in life it becomes very important to use our natural abilities correctly. Speech and Drama instruction helps students contain or illustrate their emotions. The students are trained to talk so they may be easily understood, but they are also taught to listen to others. No matter what profession you choose, the ability to talk con- structively and to listen carefully is essential for a successful life. In Auto Shop boys are instructed to treat their cars correctly. This knowledge helps insure the boys with very efficient running automobiles. This training will be very useful if they are ever one of the millions who have a long and lasting complication described by experts as ucar troublef' The wonderful improvements in audio-visual equipment have proved beneficial to many classes. The audio-visual tape recording unit, along with television sets, make it possible for students to view and discuss educational programs. Closed circuit television equipment makes it possible to tape by sound and picture an important assembly, or perhaps a school play for the purpose of reviewing, teaching, and entertaining. The camera also makes it possible for the students to view themselves on the screen. One picture is obviously Worth more than a thousand words. Andy, George, and Martya-future mechanics at work. The students learn how and why we are governed by a democratic govern- ment. The students learn about the many historic incidents and great men that help make history the exciting subject it is. The knowledge gained about the United States of America helps us to be better and prouder citizens. In Civics class, seniors are taught to evaluate and deeply appreciate the laws that govern the United States. History will prove valuable because it will be rewarding to know why laws were made as well as their function. All through our lives we will appreciate the fact that we know the rights promised to us as United States citizens. On a lighter side of our school life is the elective course of art. Art is centered around design and color as applied to various art activities. Art can be brushes filled with enter- tainment. The various techniques of painting, drawing, and combining colors will be very useful to the students striving for an art career. Typing is such a rewarding class it seems almost supernatural. Typed term papers and various other assignments bring a higher grade. The ability to type correctly will prove valuable when searching for secretarial employment. Sophomore students taking Biology are presented with the science of life itself. Through the use of scientific equipment the pupil may observe living tissue and, by doing so, may learn that many laws and principles apply to all forms of life. Such was our Junior Varisty Foot- ball team for 1967. Directed by head coach Tom Bice along with his fine assistant Allan Klinger, the Patriot yearlings posted an impressive 8 and 1 season. Under the leadership of Q.B. Chris Moyneur, the powerhouse running of F.B. Ron Heredia, and the speed of H.B. Ron Bourguignon, the Pats were always on the attack. When the opposing teams gained possesion of the ball, they didn't have a chance when they met up with linebackers Tony Lopez and Mark Karges. Equal recognition should be paid to the whole team for their eagerness and determination on and off the field to make this year's J.V. one of the best in Orange Glen History. We wish to take this opportunity too, to thank Mr. Walter Blake Jr. for all the photos he contributed to the Foot- ball Section. Scott Clay f8Ij on the receiving end ofa Chris Moyneur pass. . .... Under the coaching of Bill Valentine and Lee Burkett, the young patriots succeeded in understanding the princi- ples ofthe game of football. The offense was sparked by such standouts as Quater- back Rick Moyer, Halfback Paul Heredia, and the receiv- ing of Flankerback .lim Serviolo. The defense was led consistantly by linebacker and team captain Ken Huggins. Also a key in patriot defense were Tackle Elmer Town- send, linebacker Dennis Huff, and guard John Lawson. Golf Yes, enthusiasm and good coaching tells the story of Orange Glenis Golfers. These enthusiastic Patriots face a successful year. Orange Glen will be proud when these fine young men take to the green. By having only one senior and the rest under- classmen, the team is going through a rebuilding season and promises great seasons ahead. 11 J0hn Herdmb PVKICHCES Swing- Pete Moren shows winning style. Qmts' Sponts Centen on GAA. This year the Girls, Sports program of extramural activity at Orange Glen was taken over by G.A.A. This was a step in the direction of a better pro- gram for all girls. It gave each girl the opportunity to participate in the sport of her choice. The result was wonderful, in that many more girls than had ever before participated came out for intramural and extramural sports and workouts. The two starting sports were very big with the girls. There was gymnastics, which included tumbling, free exercise, the balance beam, the uneven parallel bars, the springboard and the horse. The girls who participated showed an avid interest in each activity. At the same time, the tennis team was busy practicing and traveling in order to meet with other schools. Although the team was not mighty this year, in the future we ought to find O.G. in first place. One of the most popular teams was the volleyball team. Many girls found them- selves traveling all over North County promoting spirit and winning for O.G. They made a fine showing. Another sport supported with avid enthusiasm was hockey. Our Hockey Team pushed on to a great season, the highlight of which was a hard fought game ending in a tie with Escondido High. The team made a definite impression on the North County hockey standings. Another sport of high caliber is basketball which was supported this year with an enthusiastic group of girls. They too made an outstanding contribution to the Orange Glen sports effort. Other sports that were offered this' year after this section had been sent to publication were track, softball and swimming. Each of these sports always generates a great deal of excitement and this year undoubtedly will be no exception. Due to the efforts of all involved, the girls at Orange Glen High School have something to be proud of in their program of sports and in the girls who con- tinue to support it by participating so avidly. To those girls we owe a great debt of thanks. . -,t aa.. , .. if i BASKGTZBAU TOP ROW, Left to Right: Mrs. Bowerman, Kathy Dare, Claudia Castaing, Karen John- ston, Sandy Carnaham, Debbie McNeil, Carol Kruse, Barbara Muman. GDIIOGUG The Year of the Patriotsn is the caption I give to Orange Glen. A year which success and dignity has been bestowed upon the Patriot Campus. The challenges have been met, and the accomplishments stand proud. This year has been a year which has been waited upon by many, to find answers to the questions which have hung over this new school. For the first time, Orange Glen met Escondido High School in competition. For Orange Glen, there was a point to be proven, and when the Patriots left the field, heads were raised high, respect was in the air, and Orange Glen was recognized as being a great high school, in the town of Escondido. Academically Orange Glen has excelled and has brought pride to the campus. Orange Glen being one of the first high schools to have Audio-Television as a part of teaching, benefited students greatly. This new program lifting new standards in educa- tion, and higher goals for students learning. The last years have been filled with meaning and purpose, and the following years shall strengthen the goals, and fulfill past traditions. The spirit instilled in this Land of the Patriotsw shall always be a bright burning torch. We, the 1968 Torch Staff wish to recognize and thank Mr. Patrick Ross, Mr. David Larson, Mr. John Sowers, and you, The Orange Glen High School Patriots. ., Thank you, , jf' f Marshall Kelsay O Editor in Chief 1968 Torch ..... . .
