Congratulations to the stude nt government for helping to make this The Year That Was. Secretary, Shirley Leviner GIRLS’ STATE Boys ' and Girls ' State are institutions of the American Legion, designed to promote better understanding of our complex political system. But this program means more than that. It means speeches, rallies, political cam¬ paigns, entertainment, athletics, and food, such as it was. Boys ' and Girls ' State are models of society designed to illustrate the practical side of modern political theory. 17

A.S.B. OFFICERS Before a studenf government con hove any degree of suc¬ cess, it must have definite purposes for existing, and its members, the student body, must be aware of what these purposes are. These purposes or goals should be guide¬ lines for selecting activities and projects and serve as the measuring stick for evaluation and improvement. The successful student government has good goals, is aware of them, and strives to reach them.
