Mr. Damelio has been the tireless ' Jack of all trades ' at Orange Glen since it ' s inception In 1962. In that year, he taught freshman English and speech. Since then, he has taken on yearbook, drama, and ad- vaneed speech . Mr. John L. Damelio Since that first year, Mr. D. as he is affectionately known, has encouraged the debate and speech program for Patriot speakers, and directed the many dramatic productions which occured this year, as he has the ones of previous years. This man of tireless energy, this campus leader, does not know that we have dedicated this book to him. Without Mr. John Damelio this yearbook. It ' s prede¬ cessors, the drama club, and many, many honors for OG would not have been possible. We thank you, Mr. John Damelio. OFFICERS Before a studenf government con hove any degree of suc¬ cess, it must have definite purposes for existing, and its members, the student body, must be aware of what these purposes are. These purposes or goals should be guide¬ lines for selecting activities and projects and serve as the measuring stick for evaluation and improvement. The successful student government has good goals, is aware of them, and strives to reach them. President, Larry McLeod 16 Treasurer, Susan Simpson BOYS’ ANDI Representatives from Orange Glen to Boys ' and Girls ' State were James Rehkopf, and Sandra Boyle. The ideas which have become our own through self discovery, study, and our relationships with others, have set a signpost for the years ahead. W. Quade District Superintendent Dear Sfudents, It hardly seems possible that another school year has passed and with it also passes another group of seniors into the chan¬ nel of adult society. We have all experienced periods in our lives when time seemed to stand still . The school year to the six-year old seems an eternity; his summer vacation almost endless and the long months between birthdays and Christmas unbelievable. Even teenagers experience this feeling of time passing slowly as they await birthday number sixteen and a driver ' s license or graduation day from high school. However, in a few short years the pattern changes rather abruptly as we assume the duties and responsibilities of adult citizens and time suddenly commences to accelerate rapidly. How we use the precious commodity of time becomes a basic ingredient of success. Use your time wisely—no one can replace it. Regards to the Patriots of Orange Glen High School. G . W. Quade SCHOOL BOARD---LEFT TO RIGHT: Colley Jeffer, William M. Kennedy, Chester E. Galyean, Ward C. Sangren, Wilber F. Bradley. 68 This is the year in which you will be called upon to exercise a variety of judgments, not as secondary school adolescents but rather as young members of the adult society which you will join upon high school graduation. This is the year when some graduates think they have discovered a new freedom. For some of you, grad¬ uation implies, at least temporarily, the termination of an ordered plan for your personal development. I submit, however, that June 14 is only the beginning of a much more exciting stage in your development, one which you have been looking forward to the past twelve years. At times the road was difficult and perhaps every experience was not a pleasant one, but I feel sure that each has had some personal mean¬ ing for you, 1 know that the major ity of the graduates of the class of 1967 recognize the above-mentioned freedom as a responsibility to personally direct the orderly devel¬ opment of self. I am sure that the members of this class will capably assume their role in this dynamic society. As a new member of the staff, my observations are necessarily those of comparison to other schools in which I have worked. In general, I would rank Orange Glen as one of the finest schools in Cali¬ fornia. One of the most gratifying characteristics of Orange Glen is the student ' s sense of responsibility toward themselves and the school. There seems to be an un¬ derlying feeling of pride in the observance of the daily schedule without a necessity for use of bells, the appearance of the campus and a solid feeling of school traditions. If I were required to list the important aspects of maturity, I ' m certain that responsibility of decisions would rank foremost. When an individual reaches that stage of cognizance, then and only then, can reason¬ ing and learning begin to occur. Such responsibility is evidenced by the actions of the perceptive A.S.B. leaders as well as by the overwhelming majority of students at Orange Glen, The credit for a happy campus life can best be attrib¬ uted to the sensitive interaction and understanding of ideas by an outstanding faculty and student body. It is in this atmosphere that learning and growth can best be achieved. Orange Glen has such an atmosphere. Mr. David L. Larson Vice Principal I am proud to be a part of Orange Glen and congratu¬ late you, the students, who have had the lion ' s share in making this school what it is., . . proud and great. Mr. Patrick V. Ross Principal On behalf of the staff, I offer sincere congratulations and best wishes to all of you. Not only will there be additional facilities and equip¬ ment, there will be increased competency of staff, new and up-to-date content of course offerings, and greater opportunities for individual development, both physical and mental. It appears at this writing that students will soon be able to profit from Instructional Television programs being broadcast from San Diego State College over KEBS Channel 15. This will bring into the classroom high quality programs for enriching or supplementing the present program. A number of students will have opportunities for on- the-job training through distributive education work- experience and cadet teaching programs starting with the 1967-68 school year. Many students will continue to have opportunities to participate in the M.A.L. program, career confer¬ ences, receive vocational counseling, and become involved in other activities designed to interest and challenge the students of Orange Glen High School in preparing for full, active citizenship in tomorrow ' s world. Bob, a native of Thailand, was a transfer student. Those who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor. He was frequently found at the beach appreciating its natural beauty. Unafraid and steady in purpose, he faced the world. He will be missed and re¬ membered by those who knew him and loved him. Quietly they I know. But I go, the intelligent, the witty, do not approve. The Orange Glen Patriots took to the field on September 23, 1966, and left the field that night with an outstanding win over Coronado, 27 to 6. A week later the Patriots returned to the field and demolished Army-Navy 49 to 0. By this time the team had picked up spirit and steam, and Orange Glen was looking forward to some great football this season. To some surprise, the Patriots dropped the rival game against Poway 13 to 7. The next game the Pat ' s burned a hole in the earth when they tromped on to the field ready to smash Vista. The Pat ' s scored early in the game, but Vista soon caught up and the game finished as a deadlock. In the last few seconds, the big, powerful tackle, Rory Reeves ran a tackle elegible play. Receiving the pass, he ran for more than forty yards and a near touchdown, only to be shoe-string tackled at the fifteen yard line of Vista. As the final gun sounded, the Pat ' s tied 6 to 6. The following game a group of fired up players rode the bus to Carlsbad, to show one of the most outstanding performances of the entire season. The score 27 to 26 in favor of Carlsbad. This game made people around the county remark that it was one of the best ever viewed. Orange Glen played an outstanding game only to lose in the last few seconds. Oceanside hosted the Patriots next, with another superior performance by the Pat ' s. The score didn ' t tell the story as the Patriots lost 20 to 14. Homecoming the following week threw the Patriots to a 37 to 7 loss, at the hands of University. Fallbrook took on the Pat ' s next in a hardly fought game only to come to a 6 to 0 loss for Orange Glen. The last game of the season showed a mighty battle which threw the Pat ' s to a 13 to 12 loss over San Dieguito. All and all the Orange Glen Patriots played good, hard football only showing a proud past and a very bright future. This was the case with this year ' s Junior Varsity football team. With personable Coaches Tom Bice and Allan Klinger at the helm, the young patriots combined efforts to extend their two year won-lost record to a fine 14-2-1 . While only finishing second in their league, their outstanding performances in the Poway and San Dieguito games revealed their potential as a Championship Team. To single out a single player for his performances would be a difficult task for it was a team effort which made this a win¬ ning team. The young Pats posed many problems for opposing defenses with the use of a balanced offensive attack. To spearhead their offensive attack, the young Pats relied on the running of halfbacks Mick Lee and Al Sanchez as well as fullback Ron Heredia and quarterback Jim Moyer. To complement this solid running game was the passing combination of Jim Moyer to Mickey Ferrick with an occasional pass aimed for one of his backs. The foundation of this year ' s J.V. football team was its stout defense led consistently by Walt Mack, Don Henry, John Kylie and David Lawson. These four players along with seven more formed a defensive unit which held its opponents to less than a 6.6 points per game average. 146 Jim Moyer displays his style of hard running against the young Panthers. PRELIMINARIES 52 Morse 56 54 Madison 53 80 Basketball After five long years of hard practicing and building for stronger teams. Orange Glen High School has reached a major milestone in the field of athletics. This season, a group of tv elve dedicated athletes under the leadership of their devoted coach brought home Orange Glen ' s first league championship on the varsity level. The coach is Bill Wetzell and the twelve athletes comprised the 1966- ' 67 Patriot Basketball Team. Poise, confidence In their own ability, and a never-say- die attitude, were probably the most influential character¬ istics of the Patriot Cagers as they moulded the second best won-lost record In San Diego County; 25 wins and 3 losses. The Pats ' non-league record was unbelievably Impressive. After winning four out of their first five games, including powerful Mar Vista, El Cajon, and Laguna Beach, Orange Glen entered the Fallbrook Basketball Tournament and powered their way through Perris, Laguna Beach and San Clemente high schools to capture the first place trophy. Individual performances were also rewarded as captain John Guerrierl and center Lance Edwards landed berths on the All-Tournament Team. The next challenge for the Pats was the El Centro Tourney. This being their first appearance In the tournament, OG ' s cagers were unknown and were not expected to finish very high in the final standings. However, the determined Patriots overcame their ratings, defeating Western League power La Jolla, Eastern League favorite Morse, defending tourney champions Yuma, and the tall, sharpshooting home team of El Centro to proudly receive the first place trophy. La nee Edwards received top honors for the Pats on the all¬ tournament team. The Pats were now ready for the Avocado League. Possibilities of winning the league championship looked dim considering the powers of University and defending champion Oceanside high schools looming in their path. However, they charged into the first round of games with confidence, losing only to Oceanside High . Orange Glen was now tied with Oceanside as league leader and their scheduled meeting In the second round would probably produce the champion. When the two rivals met In the Patriot gym with 1,327 screaming fans, history was made, as Orange Glen ' s cagers scored the first varsity victory over Oceanside in a major sport, 62-51 . Three wins later the league championship was ours. Besides the honor of becoming league champions. Orange Glen was also honored by the efforts of 6 ' 6 Lance Edwards as he was voted Player of the Year by Avocado League coaches. Other honors were gained by John Guerrierl, and Mike Gillett who were voted to the second All-League team, and by Don Chaffin and Jim Hinrichs who were given Honorable Mention. Orange Glen ' s first ever GIF Playoff game was played in the Patriot gym to a sell-out crowd. The Pats hosted Morse High School In a contest that proved to be the most exciting of the season. Three or four points were all that ever separated the two teams and only by a last minute stall were the Pats able to cinch the victory, 56-54. Western League champion Madison High was the next CIF game for Orange Glen and proved to be their third loss and last game of the season. The final score was a depressing 80-53 but it ended the proudest season Orange Glen High has ever had In the field of compet¬ itive athletics. Several cagers had an extremely successful season this season Including senior Lance Edwards, the teams Most Improved Player who set the season scoring record with 345 points and rebounding record with 219 rebounds. Senior Backcourt General John Guerrierl contributed stability with 12.1 points per game and excellent defense. Junior Mike Gillett ' s consistent scoring helped the Pats at every turn as did the rebounding and shooting ability of center Don Chaffin and for¬ wards Gene Chaffin and Jim Hinrichs. 151 LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Bill Wetzell, Charles Burkhard (Mgr.), George Herrera, Phil Johnson, Gene Chaffin, Jim Hinrichs, Don Chaffin, Lance Edwards, Mike Gillett, John Guerrieri, Wendall White, Larry Wagner, Phil Herrera, Bob Miller (Stats.), Sheldon Boyce (Asst. Coronado was the Pats next victim, being defeated by a 9 to 1 score. Once again, it was O.G. vs. Army-Navy, and this one wasn ' t easy. A base hit in the last inning of play by Doug Blake brought Dick Huff in for a 1 to 0 victory. This game proved the virility of one of O .G . ' s finest pitchers, Nick Arcuri, as he went the distance - 9 innings. The next win for O.G. was Elsinore, and the Pats showed excellent scoring power by scoring 11 runs in one inning, adding to the final score of 13-2. League play began, and O.G. still hadn ' t lost. First in line was Vista, and the Pats won an easy 4 to 0 on the arm of senior Ernie Olivas. Next was Carlsbad and the Patriots won 4 to 3 in eight innings on a sacrifice fly by Darrell Waters. This is the reason for Torch ' 67. We of the Torch staff would like to thank Mr. Craig Fischel of Craig photography for his valuable time and assistance. Also our deep gratitude goes to Mr. Pat Ross, Mr. Dave Larson, Mr. Dave Parker, and the many office staff for their aid and patience . The four years prior to 1966-67 were years filled with great promises - the promise of a league championship, a senior lawn, senior parking lot, and the promise of an ever increasing student body. ■ . ' , _..„ 1967 was, however, the year that these promises were fulfilled. Steven A.
