Football THE 1958 PIRATE FOOTBALL SQUAD Prepared for the defense of their 1957 Eastern Con- ference championship title, more than 100 football candidates reported to coach Steve Musseau and his staff last fall. Although he had but eleven re- turning lettermen, AAusseau, aided by backfield mentor Bud Goodell and line coach George Davis, finished the season with a respectable 6-2-1 record. The Bucs finished behind Mt. San Antonio and Santo Ana who tied for second with a 5-2 conference record. The Bucs had a 4-2-1. They relinquished the title to Riverside who finished with a perfect 7-0. Stressing a defensive program, the staff started the season with a bang, downing their first three oppo- nents. They were stalled momentarily by the Fuller- ton Hornets, as they battled to a 6-6 tie before thumping Citrus 40-8, setting the stages for defense of their title against the Riverside Bengals. The Pirates stall ed the vaunted powers of the con- ference before dropping a close 13-7 contest to the Tigers for the first defeat since 1955 on the home turf. The Bucs later dropped the mythical Orange County championship to the Santa Ana Dons, 33-15. Led by quarterback. Bill Douglass, the Pirates worked in alternate squads with Gene Hubbard masterminding the second unit. Hubbard led the team in total offense with all-conference John McKee trailing by two-tenths of a yard. Conspicuous for their performances during the 1958 campaign were lineman Bob Allen, the much im- proved center, and Jim Bento, the only Pirate to rate first team all-conference billing and Wigwam Wise- men of America ail-American JC honors. Receiving honors for the season ' s performances were Jack Bohon, who was recipient of the Rod E. Gound (Most Minutes Played) trophy; Ken Roberts, Most Improved Lineman; Bob Chaney, Most Im- proved Bock; Jim Knapp, Best Conditioned Player; John McKee, Most Valuable Player and Pirate of the Year honors; Bohan was also recipient of the Un- assisted Tackling trophy given annually by Don Cantrell of the Costa Mesa Globe Herald. All Con- ference first unit berth went to Bento and second unit selection to McKee. Bento was named to the Wigwam Wisemen of America all-American team and was a first alternate to play in the annual Junior College game sponsored by the WWA.
