Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1974 volume:

TRIDENT “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” Published by: The Annual Staff Onancock High School Onancock, Virginia “I have a dream that my little children will one day live in a na¬ tion where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) “Some men see things as they are and ask ‘why’? I dream things that never were and ask ‘why not’?” Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) DEDICATION WE, the Senior Class of 1974 of the Onancock High School, do dedicate this edition of THE TRIDENT to our sponsors: Mrs. Camellia Ann Moon, Reverend Charles F. Mapp, Mr. Francis Hart, and Mr. Jesse S. Poulson. THE great philosopher, Plato, once said, “Those having torches will pass them on to others.” The spirit dis¬ played by these four people has touched and lit a flame of gratitude in each of our lives. Our sponsors have passed on the “torch” which inspired the theme for the 1974 edi¬ tion of THE TRIDENT — SWEET HARMONY. WE have gained valuable academic knowledge; but we have also obtained a more valuable asset: the realiza¬ tion that we are not only “equal” as brothers and sisters, we are ONE. To each of you, I wish the best of all things in life. May happiness and success attend each of you always as you pursue your goals in life. Make those goals worthwhile and keep in mind always that your success in life will depend on your feelings and consideration for your fellow man. Earl G. Hoppes Principal Take with you dreams of gold, And treasured memories of old, Never becoming a victim of troubled times, Lest you forget the love you feel inside, Strive on to seek your place, While life holds you in her embrace, Meet with anticipation each new dawn, Remembering we’ll miss you when you’re gone. With fondest wishes for many happy times, unlimited success and only sunshine. Mildred F. Byler Secretary Although your education at Onancock High School has drawn to a close, life will afford you many meaningful learning experiences in the future. I sincerely hope that you will be as successful in your future studies as you have been in you past ones Richard Bull Assistant Principal Congratulations! You have just conquered your initial major foe: High School Graduation. VVhiie you have every reason to feel proud and jubilant, you must not permit your present achievement to lull you into a sense of false security. Your sights must be realigned and your aims focused upon even greater foes. It is our fer¬ vent hope that the associations we shared at O.H.S. will do much to bring a long, continuous string of victories to each of you. Matthews-Librarian BAND AS YOUR GRADUATION APPROACHES As your graduation approaches, you are probably asking yourself many questions: “What am I going to do with my education? What are my goals and how do I achieve them?” Even if you know the field of work you wish to enter, have you given serious thought to the con¬ tribution you can make through it toward a better world? Whatever you do, God expects you to fulfill the purpose of your existence and contribute something worthwhile to the common good of all. Keep ever mindful of your spiritual as well as your material goals; never neglect to assume responsibility; keep close to God and believe in what you’re doing. If you do, your potential for good will be limitless. James Keller THE ART OF SUCCESS There are no secrets of success. Success is do¬ ing the things you know you should do. Success is not doing the things you know you should not do. Success is not confined to any one part of your personality but is related to the development of all the parts: body, mind, heart and spirit. It is making the most of your total self. Success is discovering your best talents, skills and abilities and applying them where they will make the most effective contribution to your fellowmen. Success is ninety-nine percent attitude. Success is a continuing upward spiral of progress. It is perpetual growth. Success is relative, individual and personal. It is your answer to the problem of making your minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years add up to a good life. Wilfers A. PARKER, JR. CYNTHIA D. JOYNES STANFORD STRAND BETTY SUMMERVILLE JAMES DIX GEORGE GODWIN 95 A MEMORIAL As we look back over our years here we pause to remember three that have gone on before us. Our lives have been interrupted and changed by these three and we stop a minute to remember them in this, our moment of glory. Danny, Keith, and Mr. Ruff were true to themselves and to their school. They realized our faults and limitations but always worked to overcome them and improve our school. Their smiles, laughter, and never ending supply of spirit carried us when things looked dark. They made us, the Seniors of 1974, better people for having known them. As you, the underclassmen, finish your years here, remember these three for their love of school but most of all, love of life. We have tried to recapture some of it, now it is your turn. Daniel Ray Tilghman Robert Keith Lewis Mr. Norman Sylvester Ruff 1955-1973 1955-1973 1907-1973 We feel that they would say to us now as we go forward in this great adventure called life, “Live life for ail its worth, its really all we have.” WALSWORTH Mareeline, Mo., U.S.A. .
