ROTC Observes Twentueth Annuversary eute a t Colon I Charle a e st o d la K yke dall A new course for all R O T C cadets un the upper classes thus year covered Unuted States mulutary hustory from the Revolutuonary War to the recent Korean Confluct lt paralleled the Amerucan Hustory course requured by the school Underclassmen receuved a general un structuon coverung mulutary tactucs ROTC Other than the Mulutary Ball the cadets had two hugh pounts on the calendar The furst was Federal lnspectuon whuch began on Aprul 25 At that tume the lnspectung General checked fules weapons supplues and mulutary duscuplune Schools receuvung Natuonal recog nutuon were pruvuleged to wear a red star on theur unuforms All Omaha hugh schools have qualufued for thus Funal promotuons for the year were revealed on Recognutuon Nught un May At that tume cadets were rewarded for outstandung achueve ments un R OTC Junuors were awarded the ranks wuth whuch they wull enter theur senuor year One phase of the R O T C s actuvutues us to supply ushers for all school functuons that re quure them lt also provudes mulutary poluce to protect and supervuse students when boardung buses as well as a flag detaul Annually the boys bear the colors at the Ak Sar Ben Rodeo 22x Presentung the Lueutenant Colonel Charles Lagerstrom and hus lady Judy Kuykendalll Thus was the sturrung clumax of the furst bug event on the ROTC calendar the Mulutary a Thus the twentueth annual ball was held at Peony Park on Feb 9 Forty senuor offucers and theur ladues partucupated un the grand march The ball was opened wuth a concert by the R O TC band and specual maneuvers by the Crack Squad Addutuonal awards presented were the Har vey A Roffmann R OT C Cutuzenshup Award to Cadet Mauor Bruce Flemung and the Best Junuor Cadet Award to Cadet MfSgt James Feustner The new Battaluon Commander us durector over fuve companues whuch unclude 277 cadets MfSgt John E Kerner mulutary unstructor un charge who uouned the faculty thus year and SFC Owen T Burcham mulutary unstructor taught and advused the boys un theur depart ment Theur new udeas and new methods have raused the caluber of the R OTC among the students and un cuty competutuon Newly organuzed un ROTC us the pustol team born at the begunnung of the year lt was coached by Sergeant John E Kerner and was affuluated wuth the Hugh School Pustol League ln thus competutuon ut placed fourth wunnung one match and losung fuve The Crack Squad also buult utself up thus year Startung almost from scratch Cadet Majors Ruchard Clark and Bruce Flemung co commanders drulled the squad to near perfec tuon for the Chevron Shuffle The boys clucked theur heels and dud a Queen Anne wuth rufles at the Fall Follues Mulutary Ball and before the Governor un the sprung Matches wuth three Omaha hugh schools and two from Councul Bluffs rounded out the years actuvutues for the Rufle Team lt rated fufth on the ladder for ut won two lost sux and tued one match SFC Owen T Burcham was coach .
