It is an increasing source of won- der around school how Thomas Johnson retains his equilibrium, for he teaches the driver training course from year to year. However, his bi- ology students know that he is an authority on the nervous system. Other than teaching, he assists the school as a co-sponsor of Fire Pa- trol. Sports occupy his leisure timeg he participates in eveything from duck hunting to water skiing. Mr. Johnson, who has attended Kearney State Teachers' College and the University of Nebraska, needs to complete only six more hours work for his master's degree. North high school and Europe the link between these two points was connected by Miss Anne Keenan this pat summer To those wlso have heard her speak her reminisc ing has brought travel to life She has assimilated culture understand ing and an appreciation of fine things al' of which she passes on to her English students She uses her M A degree from Columbia Univer sity to good advantage by encour aging self expression in theme and essay writing This year she helped in the preparation of a skit about the English and commercial depart ments which was given for P TA Only part of Ray Kennedys popu lority with his students comes from his white buck shoes and crew cut The rest is from his teaching meth ods gleaned from his work at Southwest Missouri State College and the University of South Dakota During two years in the social sci ence department Mr Kennedy has brouaht hns knowledge of geography and history to the classroom Trav eling being his main hobby he has visited 42 states and three foreign countries He is also sponsoring the freshman sophomore Hi Y group Company' At ten shun' Master Sergeant John E Kerner as he directs the companies in the Viking ROTC battalion Sergeant Kerner is a veteran of World War ll and Korea He has an active in terest in boys sports dating back to his high school days in Reading Pa when he played football and basketball He also piloted an Amer icon Legion team to a city title in Brockton Mass Though it is not a new experience to be working with young boys this year has marked his first attempt at drilling boys of high school age in military procedures and tactics Times up' These are in all prob ability the two most familiar words used by Miss Flossie Lyons during the school day A graduate of the University of Nebra ka Miss Lyons first came to North in l926 Since then she has devoted her school time to teaching type to students and her recreational time to en larging her classical music collec tion Traveling is another of her in terests she has visited Canada and almost every state in this country Students fondly rememb r her for her philosophical ideas and stiff ten minutes time tests Meeting the Public is the title olven to an evenina adult educa tion class being taught currently by a newcomer to the North staff Mrs Josephine Mattox lf her pupils do as well as she has done in meetinft her student public their evenings of work will be well repaid Mrs Mattox teaches English ancl speech two subiects which she also tauqlst at McCook Nebraska before com ing to North ln her free time she en oys working at the Omaha Com munity Playhouse where she has appeared in several productions and designed sets Orville R. Matzke is the new sheriff of third floor, a title bestowed upon him for his policing there during lunch. Aside from this, he is assis- tant freshman football coach and reserve basketball coach. During the school day he teaches industrial arts and algebra. At the University of Nebraska, Mr. Matzke concen- trated in math, industrial artsi and physical education before receiving his bachelor of arts degree. Outside of school, Mr, Matzke enioys watch- ing and participating in such sports events as track, football and bas- ketball. Thereoms postulates and equations are not all that occupy the time of Miss Pearl McCroy head of the mathematics department She cently realized a lifetime dream by building for herself a modernistic new home Beside teaching mathe matics Miss McCroy also sponsors the two math clubs Fractions for freshmen and sophomores and Digits for upperclassmen A graduate of Grinnell College she is active profes ional and church circles and has been a member of the North faculty since 1924 Any shade or tint of purple and lavendar lyrical poetry and a change of glasses bring out the charmina personality of Mrs Ar dith Miller Her sincerity and un Herstandinq ways have brought her close to her students This year she has centered her attention on the study of Spanish and is con templotina a trip to South America She already is a well traveled per son for much of her time is spent ooing and coming to school a three hour round trip The Enqlish d partment claims Mrs Miller who received her masters degree from the University of Nebraska Excuses gust dont net by Nathan R Mohar For the past four years he ha looked into the why angles of boys absence excuses each morn inn l-le has a wealth of experience upon which to draw for this respons I nity for in his career he as rlealt with boys as a coach of near I every sport and with the prob lems of being the parent of a teen age son and dauahter Mr Mohar a graduate of the University of llliwois heads the social science de partment Teaching history and modern problems completes his school activities Seek the person behind the flying pencil on the shorthand pad the aaile fingers on the typewriter or the click of the mimeoaraph and vou will find Mrs Darlene Mohlman Her efficiency as Princ pal Kenneth Burkholders secretary is surpassed only by her graciousness and friend liness to all who enter the office Mrs Mohlman s stenographic career beqan as an assistant to the prlnci pal of the high school in her home town Fairbury Nebraska ln her spare time after her duties t school and household tasks are com pleted Mrs Mohlman likes to read and square dance All efforts channeled to the bet terment and service of the students and the school could well be the code by which Robert Mohlman lives As faculty advisor of the Stu dent Council he works as hard harder than any student member Mr Mohlman devotes countless hours to counseling boys regardinq their problems and futures H sponsors Boys Student Opinion cl h and is a member of the Act-vitie committee and the Board of Con trol American history and world aeography classes are included in Mr Mohlmans teaching assignment all
