M74 S S The IH H J HN of yune, X939 We who are ahout to enter a world full of strange vieissitudcsu feel that the great need in that world today is a widespread, true appreciation of the line arts. Society, moreover, is just now emergf ing from an unprecedented era of materialistic devel' opment, in which the swiftfwinged progress of organized life has ahsorhed all our mental activities. Accordingly, as we increasingly reap the results of our material progress, we must develop a keen understanding of the line arts, for they will wash away from the soul the dust of everyfday life. Indeed, the people today are ever demanding more good music in their lives, and more heauty in their homes and surroundings. Throughout our years of training, we have heen taught the importance and the influence on our lives of love and appreciation of the line arts. ln this volume we have, therefore, striven to exf press our deep, sincere appreciation of art and its influence. EDXVIN Y. MONTANYE Principals are truly unsung heroes. They are the men behind the scene who give much hut ask for little more than our cooperation and loyalty. In our high school days, we students give credit to many people- ---- teachers, advisers, sponsors, and such praise is indeed warranted, hut few people stop to consider the man who quietly and efficiently guides one and all. And so to Mr. Montanye we want to express our grateful thanks for his untiring efforts and splendid example which has made us hetter students and liner people. His understanding and kindness will not he soon forgotten, since he is more than our principalg he is our friend. May this humble tribute show how very grateful and appreciative is the Class of june '39. HlHIEHlIHN To Mr. Theodore H. Nitsche and to Mr. Charles McCann, we respectfully dedicate the Trojan of the Class of June, 1939. Cur humble attempt to honor these two arises from our appreciation of the work they and their departments have accomplished in making the Olney High School a leader among public schools in the artistic endeavors of music and the graphic arts. Mr. Nitsche's labors have made our Band and A Cappella Choir admired by Philadelphia's educators and the community in general. Mr. McCann's patient efforts in encouraging, teaching, and developing talented art students have gained the plaudits of all. We trust that the years to come will find these teachers striving yet further to make the school and community proud of its cultural attainments. MCCANN MR. Among other things, we shall always ref memlwer it as the place where we filled our iountainfpens and hought our outline maps and football and prom tickets. To Mr. David l-larr and Mr. Claude Sehoenly and their czipahle assistants, we wish to offer our gratitude. How awed we were of the vast office when we first came to Olney, and how curious we were about the hustle and bustle that seemed to be going on behind those glass doors! How terrified we were that first time we were told to report there, and when we did, how shocked and embarrassed we were to be given the lunch we had left at home that morning! Yet it took only that one first visit to make us realize that even with the tremendous amount of routine work the ofiice force does for us, it is always willing to help us with our individual, trivial wants. It is with a feeling, then, of deep appreciation that we dedicate this page to our ofliee force, Mrs. Eleanor Ryan, Mrs. Sonia Lieberman, Mrs. Sadie Torgan, Miss Rose Rothenstein, Miss Marie Schob, and Mrs. Katherine Barr. OFFICE FORCE MR. SCI-IOENLY MISS GABLE SPUNSHHS It is with feelings of pride and elation that we have had as our sponsors Miss Gable and Mr. Schoenly, two of the finest teachers in Olney. To us in the graduation class, they have been more than just history and gym teachersg they have been our helpers and advisers during the last year and a half of our stay at Olney. Those who have had occasion to need help know how friendly and helpful Mr. Schoenly and Miss Gable have been. They have given their time generously to our social and business affairs. Our senior prom and class dances would never have been so successful without their assistance. Mr. Schoenly was an invaluable help to us on the Trojan staff, and Miss Gable's ingenuity and guidance made our Class Day a success. Now that we have a chance to express our gratitude to thern, we find that all of our feelings cannot be uttered, for the truest feelings are too deep for mere words. Alf though we fall far short of what we wish to express, we say with the deepest feeling of gratitude, Thank you, Miss Gable and Mr. Schoenly, for all you have done for us. . N - Ji 1 1 : Y . Guided hy the wisdom of our counsellors through our courses here at Olney, we graduates are at last ahle to appreciate and to try to express our intense appreciaf tion of what they have done for us. But words, after all, are only words and may he forgotten, so we shall try to show our gratitude hy heing thc line citizens and using the good judgment which our Counsellors have taught us. HHVEHN 5 HH lwi Eggg' S. A. SPUNSURS We extend our deepest and sincerest gratitude to our S. A. sponsors, Mr. Waidelich, Mr. Glenn, and Mr. Oeste, who have, by their kind assistance and helpful instruction, instilled in our hearts an everlasting love for Democracy. Their efficient management of the S. A. government and affairs produced another successful admin' istration. They quietly stood in the background giving advice to the oflicers and representatives. They made us see that a democratic form of government by and for the people was the only form that could endure. This we shall remember long after we have forgotten the other things we learned in school. It is impossible that we give these three splendid Americans all the praise due to them, for we know not the numerous deeds they have accomplished as S. A. sponsors. We can only again say, 'LOur deepest gratitude to you, Mr. Waidelich, Mr. Glenn, and Mr. Oeste for your lesson in Democracy-we shall never forget it. Universal history is at bottom the history of the great men who have worked here. -'kHeroes and Hero Vxforshipf' Carlyle. Olney history is made by the ability and achievements of its capable student leaders. Norman Kron, as our splendid Student Association President, led us inspirf ingly and wcll during our senior term. Doris Cutler, who served as vicefpresident, competently and eagerly assisted our president in making our last semester at Olney the best ever. Mcmrris Goldberg, another outstanding citizen of Olney, ably iilled the position of president of the Senate. Cooperation, leadership, conscientiousness and actual accomplishments were what made this last S. A. Administration of our school for us the most efficient in its history. Because this last term was our term, and these last ofhcers our oiiicers, We apologetically disregard their capable predecessors and name them the most excellent and outstanding leaders of the Olney S. A. UFFICERS SENATE The members of the Class of june 1939 pay tribute to the Senate, which has completed a successful term under the competent leadership of S. Morris Goldberg. We feel that the Senate extended its help throughout the student body by presenting awards to deserving teams and students, collecting student welfare donations, and completing the unfinished work of the House of Representatives. Two members of our class gave their assistance to this helpful body. They were George Checkum and Elsie Klein. HCUSE UF REPRESENTAHVES Every lvlonday the leaders of our Student Association were found in Room 501. Problems eoneerning the welfare of the students and the school were discussed by the Representatives, and many were solved by them. Ringf ing speeches by active members defending their beliefs were heard and apf preeiated by the others. lvlany of those speakers were members of our graduating elass. In this manner we developed a love for our inherited demoeraey and a determination always to preserve it. GRADUATING REPRESENTATIVES Bk.. 1 Ella Bireh Bk. Z Robert B1'ient Bk. With pride and pleasure we recall the success which our unclerf takings have enjoyed, and we realize that our triumphs as a class have largely heen the results of these memhers. The IZA Class under the sponsorship of Miss Stritzinger and Mr. Dorn has completed another noteworthy term. Its officers are Rohert Hainle, Presif dentg Rosalind Munder, VicefPresidentg Marie Cassidy, Secretaryg Grace Willis, Treasurer. As we cede our title of the Graduating class to this line student group, we cherish the hope that they may derive as much pleasure from the activities of their senior term as we have. 12A COUNCIL IIB COUNCIL The efhciency of the 11B class, whose sponsors are Miss Stuart and Mr. Johnston, has been proved by its wise selection of officers and council members and by the cooperation which the class has pledged these representatives. We, graduates of june '39, sincerely wish the class of January '40 continued success in the business and social activities of its senior year. .Sf 1-ei I R 4 3'5 ' 1: K., .' The colorful gowns were put on with much care In the hope that the escort soon would be there. And Mama in her apron and Dad at his best VVcre just settling down to a nice little rest Whcii suddenly, outside there arose such a clatter, I jumped from the chair to see what was the matter, There, standing kneefdeep in the ncwffallen snow Was the handsome, hut somewhat awkward, young lweau. His flowers were placed in a fair gentle hand And the long trek started for the swell swing hand. On wheels! On chains! On motor and gearfshiftslw Through hail, through rain, and even through snowdrifts From the midst of the city to the edge of the town, To the Old York Road Cluh, the gang was hound. Then there was dancing, gossip, and laughter, Which resounded to the top of every rafter. 'Til at the break of the day that was dawning The tired ones, eager for sleep, hegan yawning. So the wraps were hrought out, And we left with a shout, 'LToodlefoo to all, and to all a goodnight! SENIUR M: rtin C 'lmam Mmm WiLny' ......... I 'L lAlllClill Recd Harry Black B .' It takes courage and ability to make a star in this field, and this team, coached by Mr. Barron, was composed of many. The team was led by Roselione, one of the best trackmen ever produced by Olney. It was a team of fighting, talented boys who truly carried the spirit and the sportsmanship character' istic of the school. EBALL T With a full veteran team to offer, and with a great pitch' ing staff, the baseball team has proved itself to be a mighty machine. This has been brought about by the untiring eff forts of Coach Debus, and the efforts of the players them' selves. The team was led by the heavyfhitting Romello, Peterman, and Redfern, one of the team's best pitchers. The individual playing of the players is unimportant com' pared to the ability and school spirit shown by the players at large. A team of good sportsmen is worth more than a championship team of poor ones. The Team Peterman Romello Redfern Tittelmayer Stetler Basho Klenk Wzlrd Haber . .. :- BAS KETBALL T This team, under the tutelage of Mr. Willaur Deturk, went out on the basketball eourt to win all their games, and although they did not achieve their aim yet they did establish the faet that an Olney team does not give up in the face of defeat. They also furthered the sportsmanship for which Olney is so well known. Led by Bill Peterman, whose long shots saved many games, and Jim Vxfoodside, the team displayed great talent. Special mention must go to Peterman who was runnerfup for the greatest number of points in the Public High League, and who seored 159 points in the entire season. The Team Haber, F. Goodrich, G. Johnston, F. Peterman, G. Vxfoodside, C. T Badly hampered hy ill fortune, and working against great odds, the team, under the mentorship of Coach Weiler, has to he commended for the fine showing they gave in the past season. The team, led by Checkum, Novak, and Frank, whose hard work and untiring efforts, and outstanding per' formances made it a success, finished in the third place of the league. One can he sure that this team was one which Olney can he proud of, because of its fighting spirit and display of ahility. The team consisted of: Checkum Wocndside Novak Kessel Frank Wacker Edelston H. Saunders G. Saunders Adams Erhacker Gerstad Christie Kistenmacher Palmer Patten I 3 4? GULF T F l This team, consisting of the few select golfers in the school, was one of the finest teams Olney has ever sent out to represent her. Led by a string of veterans, including Kerr, Herb Diamond and Drahn, and coached by Mr. Weiler, one could not ask for a better combination, or a team better balanced for ability. It was a squad exhibiting excellent sportsmanship and ability, which is something to be well proud of. The Team Diamond Kordwitz Drahn Rampson f if Kerr Heller f K Neiman - 'f gi l vi .
