Our school has been singularly fortunate in possessing one of the finest high school libraries in the city, and no less fortu- nate in having so competent a person as Miss Yoder for our librarian. The smooth and effi- cient manner in which the library has func- tioned under Miss Yoder's guidance has long been a matter of pride to Olney students and has often been commended by visitors to our school. We realize the many difficulties of Miss Yoder's position. Hers has been the task of ministering to the literary likes and dislikes not merely of a class of fifty students, but rather of a student body of over five thousand individuals: and yet, reviewing the many happy hours we have spent in the library, we cannot recall an instance of Miss Yoder's fail- ing to satisfy a student in his search for pleasure in books, nor can we remember a pupil who has not respected her the more for her sound judgment. lt has been in the library, under the influence of Miss Yoder, that our friendship with books has been fostered, and that we have realized the part literature must play in our lives. Sensible of our indebtedness to Miss Yoder for all that she has contributed to our literary background, we sincerely hope that this volume may be a source of pleasure to her in years to come. I M PREFACE IN attempting to face squarely the problems of this world as graduates of high school, we fully realize the many trials and tribulations for which we must prepare ourselves. Cognizant, as we are, of the vicissitudes of life, we naturally do not fear the times when we shall be riding on the crest of the wave, but we are apprehensive of the times when we shall be struggling in the trough of that wave swelling omi- nously about us and threatening to en- gulf us at any moment. It is then, when the tide of life seems at its lowest ebb, that one must find some source of com- fort. We feel sure that this source of comfort, to which we shall invariably turn, is literature. ln selecting literature as the theme of our record book, we, the class of Iune, 1937, are anticipating the part books will play later in our lives, not only when unfortunate cir- cumstances compel us to seek solace within their covers but also when we venture into its confines bent on pleas- ure at times when fortune has smiled upon us. Our interests in literature have been carefully nurtured at Olney, and it is certain they will stand us in good stead. ln compiling this volume the Trojan editors have allowed liter- ature to permeate naturally all parts of this book, just as literature permeates naturally all walks of life. A TRIBUTE EVERY book that is worth reading must have a theme, a purpose for having been written. Every life that is worth living should also have a theme or purpose. Every action worth doing should fulfill the same requirement. Our lives and our ac- tions during our sojourn in high school have fulfilled that requirement. Our purpose has been to improve ourselves morally, mentally, and physically. We have striven to attain the ideals set for us in our reading. You, Mr. Montanye, have constantly kept this goal before us, and aided us in our pursuit of it by providing, not only the ideals themselves, but also the knowledge necessary to attain those ideals. Your guiding hand, keeping our actions constant to our purpose and within the bounds of common sense, has given our life at Olney a unity without which it would have been practically worthless. Without this constancy of purpose, our book of high school life would have been merely a series of detached events. The adherence of the theme, however, has created coherence where chaos would otherwise have been present. We shall be eternally grateful to you for having so wisely guided our path, and we assure you in words of the Dane that: -thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of our brains, Unmixed with baser matter. - EDWIN Y. Barlow SJW J U N E STUDENTS ASSOCIATION E are not only indebted to our books for our cultural develop- ment: we are likewise indebted to the advanced system of student participation in Olney which was offered us as an oppor- tunity to apply the knowledge we gained from our books to our practical school life. We of Olney have received practical experience in conducting civil affairs and in solving civil prob- lems. We have undertaken, along with the rest of the Students' Association, the responsibility of electing president, vice-president, senators, and representatives. We have been faced With the problem of selecting students who are best equipped for the Student Association offices. Such students have relieved teachers of all monitorial duties. Under the able guidance and inspiration of the Student Association sponsors-Mr. Oeste, Mr. Glenn, and Mr. Waidelich-the elected officers have had the added responsi- bility of acting on legislation concerning school welfare. Hence we, the graduating class, do not feel that we are en- tering, inexperienced, into a world entirely foreign to us. Instead, we rather feel that we are entering a world similar to that which we have just left. It operates on a grander scale: its problems are far more complex, its demands are greater. But, because of our experience at Olney, we are not afraid to meet them. ., ! 'FW 1937 STUDENTS' ASSOCIATICDN OFFICERS SALUTE to the leaders! Even while devoting themselves to their studies, they have been able to pilot our ship of state safely into the port of the world's work. Previously, the members of our class gave strength to the crew, but, on this last leg of our educational voyage, they have held the responsibility of leader- ship. Nobly, indeed, has the task been done. The ability of our captain, Stephen Lax, has brought our vessel successfully across the bar. His sharp eye and steady hand has kept our ship from the rocks of disaster. The passengers are indeed grateful for the ability of their chief officer. Stephen rose with his crew, not from it, and we drop anchor with the knowledge that the class that follows us will have a high standard at which to aim. We are grateful for the persevering and unsung labor that our ship's purser, Virginia Quimby, has given so gladly in her Association. Virginia capacity as Secretary of the Students' has held that position for many terms and has executed her office well. We extend our thanks to the lower class officers of the Students' Association. We owe much of the success of the term to Ruth Ebert, our Vice-President. We will always remember Edward Kane, President of the Senate, who, though still a junior, is one of the most active boys in the school. J Senate HAT select group, composed of some of the ablest students in each class, which acts as the executive committee of the House of Representatives, is known to us as the Senate. Beside considering all unfinished business of the House, the Senate has juris- diction over a variety of other activities which they carry on in a commendable manner. Funds for the School Beautiful Committee and Student Welfare are collected by the Senate. The baskets distributed at Christ- mas and Thanksgiving which bring such happiness to needy families are collected by its members. Senators are also well-known for their excellent work in reference to the planning of projects for the general Welfare of the school. Mr. Glenn, by his unceasing efforts as faculty sponsor, has made of the Senate a school institution respected and honored in the hearts of the student body. UN House of Representatives E, the class of lune '37, pay a tribute of admiration to the House of Representa- tives. It is the body of students to which We gave our unhesitating faith: through the four years of our sojourn at Olney, we feel that our faith has been justified, and We are gratefully satisfied. We Wish, therefore, to express our grati- tude to all who have given their time and effort to the furtherance of our interests and the interests of the school. Our appreciation is also due to the House of Representatives' able sponsor, Mr. Oeste, who has guided us with the finest leadership on the road of Student Participation. WW CLAUDE SCHOENLY HE present graduating class comes to the time when our connections with Miss Gable and Mr. Schoenly must be severed with a feeling of deep gratitude. We are grateful for the guidance and assistance they have given us during the past three terms. We have had before us the task of absorb- ing the knowledge contained in our text books. We had to understand the great Works of literature, the theory and prac- tice ot problems in physics, algebra and chemistry. We had to become conscious of the great past and the more glorious future of our country through our social science classes. With all this Work to prepare us for the future, without the help of Miss Gable and Mr. Schoenly, We should have had to forget the present. All thoughts of class, movies, dances and trips would have fallen by the Wayside if preparation for them had 1937 ' ' MARTHA GABLE been left to us alone. But our sponsors, freely giving of their own time, have helped us with all these projects. Although they, too, were concerned in the preparation of many students for the future, and although they, too, have out-of-school interests of their own, they gave unstintingly of their time and effort to make our present enjoyable and future secure. Theirs has indeed been a noble sacrifice, for they could hope for no reward other than the satisfaction of having done a job well. And done it well they surely have. To this reward the members of the graduating class of Iune '37 wish to add what weight our sincere and whole-hearted thanks can add. We . . . can no other answer make, but, thanks, And thanks, and ever thanks. MMAG M Charles Blaker Elmer E. Craig JUN Mildred Osler Myra Godfrey Alice Lowengrund THE 12B The 12B Class owes an incalculable debt ot gratitude to their advisers. Taking us as Freshmen under their surveillance, they have successfully guided us through the tour years ot our high school education, inspiring us in times of despair and giving freely a' Wealth ot intelligent advice when we were' in dire need ot it. They have unstintingly and quietly sacrificed their valuable time so that they might aid us to solve our troubles. They have aided us to become better and more intelligent citizens, both in school and in the world outside. They have iw' Af E 1937 i '--- Rose Lischin Marta Samans Eleanor Phillips ADVISERS established in us, by their sincerity and friendliness, a sense of responsibility and a determination to make successes of our- selves. Imbued with this spirit of responsibility, we cannot, we must not, fail. For ever, through triumph and set-back, we will carry with us remembrances of their unsung sacri- fices. Let us hope that We prove Worthy of them. Let us hope that We succeed, for only by doing so, can we partially repay our debt to our loyal and beloved friends-the 12B Advisers. Rose Sichel Charles McCann 12B COUNCIL HE Council, a representative body, com- posed of one delegate from each advisory group, has ably assisted the executive offi- cers in all matters of legislation. SENIOR FRENCH CLUB Olney has learned to look upon the Senior French Club as one of its most active organizations. It is of tremendous interest to all French students who wish to know more about the language which they study. Many promi- nent speakers address the club during the course of the term. Indeed, part of its success should be attributed to the enthusiastic guidance of Mr. Barrett. GERMAN CLUB The German Club is one of the foremost organizations of Olney High and is under the sponsorship of Miss Samans. Its purpose is to devote attention not only to the language of Germany, but also to the customs and background of this civilization residing across the sea. nf-ef-:1-vw--f--1 -1 wmv-'fe-.FT1 wFw-wf+ -1:1--.-rw, --W l 1 it LY. STUDY HALL Now, as never before, Study Hall is managed by the students in addition to being for the students. Through the wisdom of Mr. Wetter and Mr. Haupt, an executive committee has been organized under their direction which consists of the following members: Annaliese Wolff, Margrit Haas, Ruth Schweikart and Robert Steinberg. In addition to these students, two gradu- ating pupils are on the committee, namely, Ann Kummer and Irene Stritzel. The latter two do all the clerical work while the former members participate in other phases of management. To quote Mr. Wetter: Study Hall is now run 98 per cent by the students. Although we, the graduating class, have only enjoyed this freedom for a short time, we feel that it is a vast improve- ment and will continue to be for the school in general for a long time to come. , f '51 -' X r .5 I xfkut- X . , it , If N af : if Wx, I ,fx f . CHEMISTRY CLUB Olney's budding Einsteins have banded themselves, under the leadership of Mr. Fay, and delved into the great mysteries of the world of science. Through their experiments, they receive an education in chemistry which they could not hope to acquire in the classroom. Test tubes, retorts, varicolored chemical solutions and young scientists peering at a successful experiment with rapture in their eyes can be observed whenever the Chemistry Club meetings are under Way. Led by the acting Captain, fiery Reds Beinstein, Olney came out victorious in five league encounters, defeating Frankford, Northeast, Germantown, Central, and Gratz. Olney lost a heart'- breaking encounter to West Philadelphia, was just nosed out by Overbrook, and Went down fighting before a superior Ram's quintet. Because of the loss of Ioseph Paget, a fighting Trojan, the Blue and White forfeited their last game to Roxborough. Coach DeTurk, starting with only one former varsity player, built a fighting, hustling aggregation of which all Olney was justly proud. Olney finished in a tie for fourth place with Northeast. Among those who will be graduated in lune and who Won Varsity O's on the basketball team are Francis Haney, Paul Orndorf, Dick Thomas, and Bob Dougherty. UNE BOYS' BASEBALL Roy Allen Vincent Hink Arnold Beinstein Paul Langebartel Ioseph Buckman Clinton Root Sidney Devers Edward Rosenfeld Peter Enderle Richard Thomas Wm. Fertman Iohn Schock Wm. Haber Albert Zeichner This year's baseball team bids fair to measure up to former Trojan standards. The Debusmen appear to be in tor a very good season. Building around a nucleus of four returning veterans and several members ot last year's reserve nine, Olney should battle for the title with Frankford, Southern, and West Philadel- phia. The Blue and White beat Northeast Catholic 9-6, and tied With Penn Charter 2-2. Olney also Won its first league encounter from Frankford 9-5. Missing from next year's Trojan nine will be Roy Allen, Reds Beinstein, Ioe Buckrnan, Clinton Root, Dick Thomas, Pete Enderle, and A1 Zeichner. BOYS' TRACK Q .- il, li - .-In U it Arthur Bergey Richard Hall Walter Coles Robert Heisler Ioseph Boyle Howard McGhee Edward Blackwell loseph McCleary Walter Graff Frank Nolan Robert Flemming Stephen Kerr O1ney's track team has, this year, the use of our new cinder track for practice. The team is developing into a hustling fight- ing squad which, although their chances of winning the title are slim, will be fighting their hardest for Olney. The foes of this year's cindermen will know they have been in a battle. Coach Tierney is depending on Ed Blackwell, Bob Heisler, Harry Philips, Frank Nolan, Barclay Knorr, Ray German, Walt Graf, and Iohn Kaufman as the mainstays of the team. The team will probably finish higher than last year's fifth place. JUN I937-l GYM TEAM Once again Olney had a gym team of which it may well be proud. The Weilermen dropped only one league meet, that to Southern, this year, but made up for that by finishing first in the championships at Penn. The performance of Iohn Wolf showed that he is undoubtedly the best schoolboy gymnast in the city. He again Won the city individual title. Coach Weiler will sorely miss Bill Fennin, lack Crawford, Harry Franke, lohn Wolf, Art Bergey, loseph Himmelsbach, lames Schall, Reuben Goldman, lack Delaney, and Bill Daminger, who will be graduated this lune. H' TENNIS TEAM rfv-s.., kt R Q36 Stanley Weinteld Ray Kasser Alvin Siegel Ray Brandau Stephen Lax William Roth Robert Harris With tour veterans returning from last year's tennis squad, which was the best ever to take the court for Olney, this year's team promises to be a winning aggregation. Considering that many of last year's stars of the Various high schools have gradu- ated, Coach Grirnsley's task to build a title winner will be easier. Olney competes in both the Public High League and the Inter- scholastic League against strong opposition, so it will be a real feat if either title rests in our trophy cases this year. .WW JUN 3 7 GOLF TEAM Charles Carson Martin Kuhn Ioseph lthen Albert Schillinger Stephen Kerr Clifton Smiley Walter Kordwitz George Tondorl Olney's golf team prospects appear very promising. The three returning veterans, Kerr, Kuhn, and lthen, will play the one, two, and four positions respectively with George Torndorf, a newcomer, taking care of the number three position. Coach Weiler is not predicting the title for Olney, but he is confident that Olney will give a very good account of itself. Olney lost to Overbrook High School 1OV2'4V2 in a very close meet. Those representing the 12B class on Coach Weiler's squad are Kuhn, lthen, Torndorf, Smiley. , l.. J GIRLS' BASEBALL On Monday, April 12th, Coach Anna K. Liese sounded the first call for girls' baseball. An enthusiastic group of sixty responded, and the girls' gym was alive with discussions about positions, hopes for league victory, and there were more than a few inquiries concerning a reliable muscle liniment. Althought the SGCISOHIS schedule has not been made up, it will undoubtedly include encounters with the other two league members, Roxborough and Kensington High Schools. The team will not be selected until several practices have been held, but seven members of last year's squad reported, and no doubt they will see varsity action this season. They are: Lois Ashman, Alberta Worst, Caroline Good, Dorothy Sivitz, Virginia Winpenny, Eleanor Eifferman, and Anita Goldberg. UN 3 glllylsyvu, . -m 1 gf 711.-. A team composed almost entirely of newcomers tied one league game and lost the re- mainder by close margins. Other members of the Miniature League are Kensington and Roxborough High Schools, each of which plays two games with the Olney girls. The Blue and Whiters also met Hallahan and West Catholic High teams in contests which were chiefly practice games, as these members of the Catholic League are widely known for their prowess. The new two-court system, which requires great skill and technique, made its debut this year in Olney. Coach Anna K. Liese is looking forward to a successful season next year as practically all of the present varsity squad will return. , Captain Marjorie Raiguel, star defense player, and Virginia Patton will be graduated in Iune. The characterizations were most ex- cellently done, the role of the Queen being admirably enacted by Marjorie Evans, that of Frederick Granton by Frank Pollard in a most engaging manner, and the roles of 1 9 3 7 QUEENS HUSBAND Lord Birten, Major Blent, and Petley being played by capable Ivan Gilbert, Lewis Atlas, and Gladys Bowers respectively. The cast through the skilled direction oi Mrs. Dorothy B. Crawford gave ct fine performance. As- suredly, few of us who saw The Queen's Husband will forget this great achievement in the Olney tieldof dramatic art.
