' ■' Sa our president ,V ' -free ' , The Christian College This year you have had the high privilege of being enrolled in a Christian College. The advantages which have accrued to you have been many. Among the more important advantages are those of close personal friendships in a warm atmosphere of Christian spirit and fellowship. This is true concerning both faculty members and student body. There is a sense in which Olivet is a closely knit family with little differentiation between faculty and student. The success of any one on the campus is not only the success of one individual but it is that of the corporate group. Likewise, failure on the part of any one is reflected not only in that individual, but in the entire Olivet family as well. This community feeling of love, fellowship, and concern plays a dynamic part in making Olivet a Christian college. For the secular college, all of life is secular, but for the Christian college, all of lite is sacred. It is this distinction which makes all the difference in the world. This does not mean that the Christian young person, or Christian col- lege, is drab and uninteresting; it simply means that life has a central purpose, a real point of beginning, from which life can be lived to the full. That is one reason why an educator observed, while visiting Olivet recently, that our young people look so clean and so whole- some. There is a Christian buoyancy, enthusiasm, and idealism on a Christian campus which carries with it genuine contagion for Christian service in all the vocations of life. May God grant us a truly Christian college, and truly Christian young people to meet the challenge of our day. Harold W. Reed, M. S., Th.D., D.D. President, Olivet Nazarene College [861 Carl S. Larsen, founder and con- ductor. A wider variety of musical presentations was made possible by a Chamber Orchestra within the membership of the choir. February 18, 1955 was a red letter day in the history of the choir, as it has long been the desire of choir alumni and friends that records be made for dissemination over the entire country. This year has seen the fulfillment of this aspiration when Recorded Publications Company, affiliated with RCA Victor, cut several selections for dis- tribution. The choir ' s most outstanding activities this year in- cluded: appearance at Keswick Conference in Chicago, presentation of Handel ' s Messiah to two capacity au- diences, participation with the College Symphony Or- chestra in a joint concert for the Kankakee Women ' s Club, and its annual tour, this year throughout Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Hymn tunes, choral compositions, organ chorals, and gospel songs are transcribed for brass instruments to make up the repertoire of this group. With this varied program the Brass Choir has found an enthusiastic response to its concerts in chapel, in College Church, in Youth for Christ rallies, and in churches throughout the mid- west. Crabtree, F. Fortune, W. Parsons, D. Watson, B. Squires, Prof. Vail. Second Row: J. Hanson, P. Bassett, H. Keech, C. Bailey, B. McQueen, D. Metcalf, B. Myer, T. Murray, G. Houchins. Third Row: F. About a dozen girls had the honor of being broken to this elite athletic- club. This year the club was under the fine leadership of Shirley Strickler. They started off with a 34-21 triumph over the Alumni at Tip-Off. The club was ac- tive throughout the year and then the second semester was climaxed by the annual spring O Club Banquet. However, throughout the entire grid season the Green line was riddled by injuries. Not one time were they really at full strength. They pos- sessed plenty of size, lots of speed, and plenty of savvy , but when it was needed the most, they did not have it because of the plague of grid-iron ac- cidents. Key men in the line were Paul Bassett, Pete Romeril and Bob Temple- ton. Carroll Ball, Don Carpenter, and Ron McQueen were real threats in the backfield. [200] Left to right, standing: J. Kammer, R. Although threatened to the final wire, the Red Men maintained the lead throughout the entire season. Under pressure they performed like true champions. This is indicated by winning several one-point decisions. Ray Reglin and Bob Squires were mainstays in the line with Fred Richardson, Don Spotloe, and Gene Phillips handling most of the backfield duties. Coach Dave Boice had a strong starting lineup, but lacked in depth of substitutions. In the final game of the season the men in blue avenged an earlier loss to the Indians by sacking the champs 14 to 0. Standouts in the line were Bud Polston and Clint McLouth. Dave Tyler, Tom Murray, and John Beal were a terrific trio in the backfield. What they lacked in experience they made up in hustle and spirit. With only a couple veterans, Coach Crabtree had a tremendous task of rebuilding. Of those pictured below, eight are freshmen. With all their men returning, the men in red should prove to be a real threat next year. Strong in the hitting department were Bob Crabtree, Scott Gardner, and George Garvin. Lee Dur- bin handled most of the hurling assignments. Left to right: Sitting: B. Crabtree, R. Robinette, M. Spence, L. Durbin, C. Nash. Standing: S. Meissner, G. Garvin, L. Larsen, W. Frankhauser, S. In six games they scored a total of sixty-two runs while holding their opponents to just five. Jim Smith, Paul Dishong, and Dick Converse each ham- mered the ball at a .500 clip or better. Another significant factor in the Trojan power was their air-tight defense which pulled them through in the clutch on many occasions. Standing: R. Converse, L. Schoenwetter, C. Hartberg, V. Fischer, J. Mitchell. Seated: P. Dishong, R. Morrisson, R. Meyers, G. Humble, J. Smith. [205] spartan Softball It was a long, hard season for the men of Sparta. Duplicating last year ' s record, they failed to come through with a single victory. Although trying des- perately on several occasions, they lacked the final drive. They had a fairly strong fielding team, but were lacking in the hurling department. They were paced by two lefties, John Hanson, and Burley Smith, and by slugger Frank Hallum. Standing: E. Anderson, M. Brokaw, L. Strickland, F. Hallum, L. Morford, J. Brillhart. Seated: J. Hanson, M. Demaray, H. Taylor, J. Hanson, B. Smith. £ -. ' £££ [206] ■■B B B!1B Bt:c IT j. They lost two one-run de- cisions to the powerful Trojans. They ended the softball campaign with a three- won and three-lost record. Barbara Strong and Norma Blochberger, the old reliables for the Indians, hammered the ball for .636 and .619 averages, respectively. Handling most of the hurling assignments was Ann Taylor, who finished the season with a two- won and two-lost record. [207] Left to right, standing: N. Morse, B. Beard, M. Conrad, L. Jentzen, L. Gwen Ulveling, who did the pitching, lacked the fielding support that she needed to come through with victory. Josie Jarvis and Norma Morse were the leading hitters for the lassies from Sparta. With most of their crew back next year, they should be a real threat. [208] c - ifci. .■-. ' .-•- - •• - - : • - - -— Firrf Row: B. Vogel, M. Hickler, S. Spence, N. Hendricks, R. Scott, E. However, they fought back gamely-winning their last three contests, and managed to gain a share of the crown. The basket sniping of John Beal and Vern Fischer along with John ' s floor play and the rebounding of Craig Hartberg and Dave Boice explain their fine record of nine wins against three losses. This was the third straight year in which the Trojans have had to share the title with the Indians. [ 212 ] Kneeling: B. Crabtree, J. Romain. First Roto: D. King, W. Parsons, B. Cobert. On one occasion they pumped in ninety points for a new school record. The tremendous height of George Garvin and Scotty Gardner along with the hustle of Wendy Parsons and Stu Meissner ' s jump shot made a well-balanced attack. They finished with a season ' s record of nine victories and three defeats. [213 ] H. Taylor, B. Smith, J. Martin, K. Short, Coach R. McQueen, L. Larsen, L. Morford, J. Hanson, D. Knotts, Manager, L. Lease. spartan basketball Coach Ron McQueen had hardly a man over the six-foot stripe. The well- coached men of Sparta had plenty of drive and hustle, but they just couldn ' t cope with the height and experience of the Indians and Trojans. Two southpaws, Burley Smith and John Hanson, provided most of the scoring punch. The ad- ditions of Dave Brown at the latter part of the season strengthened the team considerably. This is explained by the fact that he poured in seventy-two points in two games. [214] First Row: N. Morse, E. Nichols, D. Pollard, E. Young, L. Fraley, K. Horner, R. Downs. Second Roto: A. Birchard, M. Quick, B. Nauman, J. Fraley, B. Stouffer, N. Whitaker, B. Beard. spartan basketball The lassies from Sparta duplicated their men ' s record by winning none and losing eight. The scrappy, but inexperienced green wave couldn ' t quite come through when the pressure was on. With practically all their team returning next year they should be considerably tougher. Leading them on offense was set-shot artist, Betty Nauman, who averaged eight points per game. John Han- son coached the Spartan gals. [ 215 ] First Row: R. Peters, D. Keller, B. Hickler, B. McBride. Second Row: Z. Hawkins, E. Campbell, M. Stone, R. Scott. trojan basketball The Trojan gals finished the season at an even .500 clip, ending up in second place. All their four victories came at the hands of the winless Spartans. They lacked the depth and experience of the champion Indians, but were real competitors to the final gun. With the freshmen talent they had this season, next year they ' ll be the team to watch out for. Bev Hickler lead the girls from Troy with an 18.8 per game average, and Ruth Peters followed with 7.7 points per game. [216] First Row: J. Schray, A. Taylor, S. Strickler, M. Cook. Second Row: Coach B. Crabtree, N. Blochberger, E. Vest, B. Strong, J. DeBreaux. indian basketball The Indians girls made it a clean sweep as they romped through the season without a single defeat. Led by the offensive punch of Barb Strong and Shirley Strickler, the squaws were seldom challenged. Their height advantage and ex- perience proved to be too much for their opposition. This was the third straight season in which they have won the champion- ship. The defensive play of Norma Blochberger and the 24.7 and 17 point averages of Strong and Strickler made them tough in anybody ' s game.
