'-s:v', A- The Olathe Teaching staff honored outstanding students in various areas at the Blue and Gold Assembly, which was held on June 2, 1978. The Balfour Award which ls based on scholarship, character, attitude and participation was presented to Debi Bar- rientos-the outstanding senior student. Other departments were: MATH: Senior math award-Ken Peterson, Outstand- ing Science - Four Years - Dawn Conner: Algebra II-Lynette Boyd: Geometry-David DeVries: Algebra I-Darlene Golden and Shauna Peterson. FINE ARTS: Outstanding artists - Ed Finnegan and Sandy Mummp Most improved- Kathy Kubin. BUSINESS: Typing I-Tonya Lee and Kay Ferguson-speed: Teresa King 84 Tracy Adams-Accuracy, Lisa Prldy-Outstanding Accounting student: Shorthand II - Outstanding student - Kathleen Macy, Office Practice- Carolyn Berger and the Melltta Davis Award for the outstanding business student - Karen Bollinger. SPEECH 8. DE- BATE: Brent Young, John Grover, Ginger Matney, Susan Storey, Trudy Wich, Mary Suppes, Lydia Storey, and Tammy Luellen. SOCIAL STUDIES: Karen Macy and Becky Dickerson: DRAMATICS: Trophy Receipents: Karen Bollinger, JoAnne Grant, Ginger Matney, Donna Cunningham, Karolin Hall and Dawn Conner. LANGUAGE: Gayla Golden: ROTC: Tammy Luellen and Gayla Golden, FFA STATE FARMERS: Brent Young, Wayne Brew and Earl Lindemanf Outstanding Scholarship-Dawn Conner: Outstanding Farmer-Brent Young-Star Chapter Farmer-Earl Lindeman: and Star Greenhand-Kerry Mattics. Pep Club pins and awards were also presented to members and cheerleaders. Mrs. Elaine Barbour, the National Teacher of the Year, presented the outstanding freshman award to Trudy Wlch.

sz TIRE SHOP K OWLEDGE BOWL Photo alll: Answering questions ranging from oceanography to chlldren's stories, five Olathe High School students pitted their knowledge against those of 27 other Colorado high schools in the first state wide knowledge bowl. The Knowledge Bowl, held at Fort Lewis College in Durango on May 2 and 3, was attended by teams representing ,-A -1-Q .-N.. YW H .5 gig. . schools of every size. The Olathe team was made up of -- Dawn Conner-Captain and senior, Ken Felix-junior: Gayla Golden-junior, Lynette Boyd-junior, and David DeVries-sophomore. The knowledge bowl consisted of nine oral rounds and two written rounds in which every school's team participated, A final oral round was held to determine the winner from the three top scoring teams. Although the Olathe team did not bring home a trophy, they did do a commendable job. 'Q . V . xt -Q-E o 5. The local American Legion posts coordinates the program ln the community. All expenses and fees are paid by the Legion. An absolute qualification for eligibility is that the ap- plicant be between the ages of 15 and 19, and has suc- cessfully completed her junlor year In high school. Other desirable characteristics are: Leadership, hones- ty, personality, enthusiasm, vigor, cooperation, and above all, good citizenship. Scholarship is important, but not paramount. Candi- dates should be proud of their American citizenship, with a clear understanding of our heritage and the challenge before us. The week at state is spent in studying the structure and forms of government. It is a great honor for a student to be chosen. We are very proud of these girls. P'
