j MFr The gate speaks a message diffused through time. So enter it pleads that daily thou mayest grow in knowledge, wisdom and love. We may not see the words but they are there, a part of the tradition. We sit in the library gaining our wisdom. We grow in knowledge collected from classes and friends. We learn to understand, to accept, and to question. We grow in heart, in mind and in body. Our dreams become an intangible part of the campus as if our knowledge was intermingled with life within the buildings or is a part of the ground we walk. Our love grows because college life is no longer strange. It may be good or bad, but it is familiar. There is the rain that presses dead leaves against the walk and after, in the night, forms misty haloes around the lights. We remember one tree, one tower or one mark to hold when we go. And the gate breathes a benediction So depart that daily thou mayest better serve thy fellowmen, thy country and thy God. XcckiHf iHtcuH tfj-- I see, you see, we see the campus, where the traditions mingle with the modes. We see it with the eyes of newcomers as just another campus, until the unevenness of the bricks becomes familiar beneath our feet. We are no longer startled by the brilliant green of the grass in the spring or the warm gaudiness of the fall. We are no longer awed by the white tower of Cutler Hall or the huge trees that curve in arcs above Memorial Auditorium. We walk the paths that form spokes, spreading from the hubs of the circles, circles where we meet and use the meeting for a chance to kiss our date. We have no time to pause and read the messages on the gate. We accept them. They are a part of us, part of our college life. We see and we believe, for to see is to believe. aH t tc
