' Ik J . Spring afternoon of relaxation and fun - one of the many at this time of the year. Lake Hope drew multitudes of students along the winding roads from Athens to its pleasant shores. The warm sands and cooling water provided the escape that was sorely needed. Tennis courts, ball diamonds and basketball boards received their share of recrea- tion-minded students. Soft wool blankets, summer sandals and leather convertible seats attracted those who had neither the strength nor the desire to wear themselves out in vigorous exercise. The green of campus and the shade of the McGufFey Elms provided havens for others inflicted with spring fever. There was no conflict. Students simply gave in to the temptations of nature. 22

TYPICAL Autumn Saturday afternoon — OU students strolled into Ohio Stadium to watch the Bobcats meet a Mid-American Conference opponent. The record wasn ' t always as impressive as that of a Big Ten powerhouse, but the thrills and chills of sports are as much a part of college life in Athens as they are in Columbus, Ann Arbor or East Lansing. Roars and shrieks came from Men ' s Gym on many blustery Winter evenings as overflowing crowds cheered the basketball team ' s court performance. At the same time of year, swimmers churned the Natatorium waters and wrestlers sweated and strained on the gym mats. Even before the weather man signalled the approach of Spring, the crack and thud of baseballs meeting hardwood bats and cowhide gloves began behind the fences of OU ' s baseball stadium. The sound of startijig guns and metal spikes on hard-packed cinders announced another track season, while the plunk of tennis balls on c oncrete courts heralded the opening of a rainy net season. Throughout the year, hundreds of students set aside their books long enough to enter into one or more intramural sports. The sporting scene at OU is important to everyone— competitors, spectators, and those who just like to talk about yester- day ' s scores. 21

Iarades meant floats, costumes, skits and artistry. An entire weekend, or perhaps only a single day, spent in revelry and exhaustion were memorable moments of such occasions as Homecoming, J-Prom, Greek Week, and other festivities. The grand effort and elaborate presentation became indivisible as they entered the hearts of everyone.
