We, the students, are the lite, breath, ,ind the soul of OU — whether en masse or being our own individual selves; whether coming out of a class building, juggling our books, or fumbling in our pockets for a cigarette; whether discussing the exam we say we just flunked (and hope we didn ' t), or complaining about lengthy assignments and the little time in which to do them; whether pushing forward from among ourselves to meet a roommate, pinmate, or just to mingle in the Frontier Room of the Center and the town establishments of Athens. We are the life-blood of OIJ. circulating to classrooms, through the halls ot dormitories, into the MIA movie, or just walking across the Green. Even alone, in couples, we are still the lite, the understanding, the companionship, and the love that makes OU want to live. But when we are gone, the campus is haunted. It echoes with our laughter, our tears, our complaints, and our sighs. It is a mere corpse bereft of life. And when we come surging back, the trees are filled with sunshine, the windows glisten, and even the steady downpour of rain tails to dampen the warmth of a room filled with life. By participating we mean to share. All of us, almost 7000 of us, take part in more than 1600 academic courses — from anatomy to zoology — offered at OU. Most of us join at least one of the 150 related organizations and activities recognized by the university. We join, participate, work and play. But we are more than mere sponges, absorb- ing knowledge, the social life, the university facilities and our parents money. For as we absorb, we also radiate. The decisions we make now and the precedents we are setting will continue to influence the immense world which encompasses this world of our own. So we talk m generalities, but pay attention to details. We look around us, measure our ami, then participate.
