A giant tongue of yellow f ame It burned when long ago the builders came Then, in its wide spread shadow grey walls rose. Beneath its boughs a stream of students goes. But no autumn finds these thousands just the same. And we have also passed beneath that beech. Her influence among the girls cannot be over estimated, and her ability along scholastic lines is par excellent. It is one of the active organizations. This year they have given one of the best plays that the French writers have written. It was given in such a manner that it was very interesting even if the people in the audience knew no French. They have also been instru- mental in bringing Carlo Liten, one of the most famous of French Tragedians, to Ohio University. This is one Club that all the French students aspire to be- come members of. Beta Pi Omega Sorority of America was formed from a local sorority, Theta Beta Gamma, at the College of Music of Cincinnati. These members desired to become national, taking out their charter under Ohio laws on February third, nineteen hundred and twenty. The object of this Sorority is to strengthen and cultivate friendship between the members thereof and thus to draw them into closer relationship with one another, so that this friendship may last not only thru college days but thru life, and for that purpose to establish associate sororities in various musical colleges and centers of the United States, to foster the study of vocal and instrumental music and elocu- tion, to assist talented people in every possible way in the study of vocal and in- strumental music and elocution, to add to the social student life of musical colleges and schools. His team was not as suc- cessful this year as it was last, for he seemed to be followed by an in- jury Jinx that he could not get away from. No one in the State questions his knowledge of .Athletics, and his system of offense in football has been highly praised throughout the State. We will be sorry when he retires this spring, and as he goes about his professorial duties he has the best wishes of every student in Ohio. 1920 • • ATHENA • • 1920 Captaix Ellis Hollie was chosen to captain this season ' s Football team. Playing a tackle position he ripped and tore an opponents line until he was feared by every team in the State. He was one of the biggest men on the line, a sure tackle, and when the ends turned the play toward him, it was there that the play stopped. Hollie has left the Uni- versity and we wish him as much success against the world, as he had against his football opponents. 1920 • ■ ATHENA • • 1920 Ohio ' s 1919 Team 1920 • • ATHENA • 1920 Newman. Quarter-back Harry has closed a very honorable football career at Ohio. For three years he has repre- sented Ohio on the Gridiron. He has always played at Quarter-back, and all that we need to say is that he has always used his head . His forward passing has surely always been accurate. Harry is a three sport man and he will leave a vacancy that will be hard to fill. 1 fr . I P r G.AHM. Center Hebe was the only man on the squad that played in every quarter this year. We think there was not a better center in the State. With his 200 lbs. he could not be moved at all. He will graduate in June. Emde. Half-back Jack had the reputation last year of never being thrown for a loss while carrying the ball, and he carried it a great many times. He was a line plunger of high caliber and was mentioned for all State material. He was always full of pep and could always be depended upon. He will leave a vacancy in the Half-back position that will be hard to fill. 1920 • ATHENA ■ • 1 920 Cross. Guard Doc ' s playing this year is above reproach. I!c is a man who always fights and fights hard. henever called upon he was there, and always gave all that he had. He was a great asset to the team due to his high morale. We are all sorry to see Doc ' leave us but heres wishing him success. Hagi-ev. Hai.i-back Mike was the fastest man on the team. When he started around all that you could sec was a blurred streak of Green and White. .Mike has another year with us, and we are expecting great things of him. Kreiger. Exd Irish who Captained the iS squad, returned to us last fall to show us his ability again. Playing his position at end, he was always tearing ofl long gains by the aerial route. He was one of those men w:ho could be relied upon in almost any position. His punting gained Ohio many ards. 1920 • • ATHENA • • 1920 Fuller. Half-back Peg playing a half-back position was a terror in the eyes of his opponents. He wiggled and squirmed away from many a tackle, and his changes of speed were wonderful. He was forced to stay on the bench for several games due to a weak ankle, but he made up for it when it got well. He will return next fall. Stockd.ale. Half-back Stocky is one of Ohio ' s three sport men. He was a consistent trainer, and a hard worker. He will be with us another year, and we are ex- pecting great things of him. LooMis. End Bob playing a flanking position deserves a lot of credit for his style and never-quit fashion. He is considered one of the best ends in the State and receiv ed All-Ohio mention. He was kept out of the last two games on account of an injury. 1920 • • ATHENA • • 1920 Davis. Quarter-back Davy only weighs 124 pounds but lie is one of the best fighters that ever donned an Ohio uni- form. His grit, speed and aggressiveness always kept him on top. During his two years of ' arsity ball he has been mentioned each year for .All-State. Morgan. Half-back . ' Mthough Tom was not a regular, this vear, he was one of those men that played in nearly every game. He could be relied upon, and when he returns next year we will expect him to give us good service. Jefferson. Guard Big Jefl has been with us for two ears. His value as a defensive man cannot be over- estimated. Any bucks that came his waj- always fell short of their objective. 19 20 • ATHENA • • 1920 HiBBARD. Guard Big John is one of the best men that ever wore a Green and White uniform. He was al- ways full of pep , and when any thing started his way it was always sure to stop. ' ' Big John will be back with the Gridiron squad ne.xt year, and he is already assured a berth. Young. Guard Handsome was a linesman who could al- ways be relied upon. Coach tried to keep him off the team in order to protect his baseball arm, but that was impossible. He will also be out next year. ■■ t ' Wade. Tackle Jim reentered school this fall with the in- tentions of making a place on the All-Ohio team, but he received a broken leg at Kenyon that shattered his hopes. He was the most aggressive man on the team. 1920 • ATHENA- • 1920 Pope. Full-back The injury Jinx followed Pope ail season. Pope was one of the best plungers that Ohio had. He will return next fall and we hope that he will be free from that hoodoo of injury that ful- lowcd him all last season. Nye. End Mappy is one of the smallest men on the team, but he has the fight that takes him through. He hooked many a forward pass that helped Ohio on her way to the opposite Goal. He played end and Tackle last year, and he is right there with the goods. He is al- ways ready to help any man on the team, and he will win the respect of every man on the squad. He will have eight men returning and with this material he should make some of the conference teams in the State look sick. 1920 •• ATHENA • • 1920 Captain Stocky Stocky was chosen to lead this years squad and he was capable of handling all responsibility and honor that was reposed on him. He was always on his toes and helping every man all he could. Stocky played a guard position and at times looked as though he was the only man on the floor who was playing. To Stocky must go a lot of credit for keeping the team in condition and helping thein win so many games. He would be an asset to any basketball team and we rejoice when we find out he will be with us again next year. Stocky is not only a basketball player of note but as good an all-round athlete any one cares to meet. 1920 • • ATHENA • • 1920 Basketball Review Ohio ' s basketball season was a credit to the school as well as to the team. Davis, Newman, Stockdale and King returning to school this fall. All of these men are wearers of the basketball O and with these men Coach Gullum had a good foundation for a strong team. Some of the other candidates were ' an Sickle, Starr, Loomis and Earich. With such material as this Coach Gullum rounded into shape a team that was feared and respected by every other team in the Ohio Conference. Ohio ' s schedule was filled by the best teams in the Conference and she got away with lots of credit to herself. He is a wonderful floor man and is a dead shot when in the open. He is left handed and when he shoots his guard is always on the wrong side. This allows him much freedom in shooting. Angus is a Junior and will be an asset to ne.xt year ' s team. Davis The biggest little man that ever donned an Ohio uniform. Davis ' size was not a handicap to him because his speed and accurate shooting made up for all he lost in stature. He holds the honor of scoring more points than any other man on the team, and we will welcome him back next ear. Xewm. n Harry has completed his basketball career at Ohio and has left a record to be envied. Playing a close guarding game was his style, and his op- ponent was lucky to register any field goals. W ' e are all sorry to see Harry leave but we wish him as much success in the world as he had on the O. U. basketball team. 19 20 • ATHENA Krieger Irish was late in joining the squad but when he get out all his opponents saw the fire in his eyes and steered clear. Earich Sim, because of his stature was chosen to play the center position and he did it with credit to Ohio ' s team. This team carried away the Conference honors. This team won nine out of ten games: losing only to The Ohio State boys by the margin of 3 to 4. When we consider that in this team we have men that have since been in demand by professional teams we can understand that they were not lucky, but they are good. He played on the Championship team last year, and had the highest batting average of any man in the Conference. He is out this Year taking care of the second station, and we think that he has a team that will come thro ugh again with the Conference honors. Gus has the confidence of the students at Ohio and they all wish him success. 1920 • ATHENA ■ 1920 OLSOX, THE BEST MAX OX THE CAMPUS It is Thor ' s job to keep Ohio ' s Athletes in working order. He mends the broken tissues, and it is a familiar sight to see him run out on the field with his little satchel, and mend up some injured player, and tell him that he is all right, and the game goes on. Xo one has ever complained that he could not Rub. However it has been only as a Phjsical F.ducation idea, and not as a sport. This rear Ohio has turned out a wrestling team. It has been given wonder- ful support by the student body, and also by the athletic council. Ohio lost her first match to the University of ' irginia. Then when the V ir- ginia boys came over to Ohio they were defeated by a large score. This is one sport that will develop more muscle during the time that it is given a trial than any other sport known. Some folks take naturally to it, others acquire it, and some never come down with it at all. The general symptoms of this most dreaded and welcomed disease is a slight red- dening behind the ears, the color spreads generally forward and meets on the nose causing same to become verj- shiny. When the victim is approached by the tor- menter the heart flutters like an old dish rag hung on a scare crow. The feet are always prominent and in the way causing said victim to stumble a great deal. The hands usually go to the waist. The most favored flower of the stricken is the tulip which causes great commo- tions on the spinal column. The best way to keep a persons love is not to return it. This way the other fellow always has something coming to him. If by chance it should be a mutual swap, all the glories of the universe know it from said outward alloverishness. The effect is something like when a man is drunk, he shows that he is but he thinks no one knows it. Love takes the place of wood alcohol nicely. Love was meant to make us glad, but sometimes it makes us sad, for some amateur usually tries to assist cupid and bungles things in great shape.. The best antidote to the poison is a marriage certificate and a parson. Dear Maw : I rec ' d youi ' s of tlie 13th instly., and was glad to hear that yon are well except the red pig which has the quinsy. That was awful nice that the Ladies Aid Society made such a hit with their play, Uncle Tom ' s Cabin , given for the purpose of raising enough money to build an addition to the Hog Run jail. You say that Lem Tuggle made the hit of his career in playing the part of the Biggest Blood- hound but that, inasmuch as that writer fellow in the Louisville paper called him a .second Hamlet , Lem can ' t decide whether he is insulted or what. Well, Maw, I don ' t know whether I can help him out any or not, Init Ull tell you all I know aliout it. This guy Handet was a foreigner who had a kind of prominent jiart in one of Wm. Shakespeare ' s plays. Shakespeare was a fellow w-ho wrote quite a lot of plays a long time ago and some of them are real good, only they are awful hard to read as Bill ditln ' t have much education except Greek and Latin and consequently wrote awful poor English. Well, anway, it seems that Hamlet had an LTncle who was a hard-boiled hombre with a leaning toward murder. This Uncle caught Hamlet ' s papa asleep in the garden one day, though why anybody should want to sleep in a garden I don ' t know, and he poiu ' ed rat-poison in Mr. Hamlet Senior ' s ear, and I guess it went to his brain or something for he dietl. Hamlet had a hunch w-ho did the dirty work, but they wasn ' t any finger- prints or clues left so he couldn ' t do anything about it. So he kinda got super- natural and began holding long and interesting conversations with skulls and things. And at last he got results, for one night when Hammyand a bird named Horatio was working the Ouija Board, Hamlet ' s papa walked in, clad in flowing wdiiskers and a white sheet, and spilled the beans. After that Hamlet got busy and, when once he got in action, Haramy was some fast little worker, Ull say. He pretended like he ' s gone bats or something and after some kinda clever gum-shoe work, which included a theater-party among other things, he finally hung the dirty deed on his Uncle, who was then King.
