IO The mystic wings of the Death Angel have brushed our lines, and a vacant place exists in the ranks of our instructors, and a well-known face has faded forever from our ways. Entirely de- voted to his work for the very work'S. Sake, gwmg even the depart' ing days of his life to our instruction, Professor lohn. Short passed away from earth conscious of ao true and entire life s labor performed in but a brief share of the time usually allotted to man. We were fortunate in having the chair of Greek created during the year, and still more so in having called to it Professor Josiah R. Smith, whose years of careful study both here and abroad, have eminently fitted him 'for the position. On the other hand, Professor Wm. A. Mason, by virtue of a position better adapted to his work, has resigned from our Faculty. In him we lose a thorough gentleman and competent instructor. i A y Participating for the Hrst time in the State Oratorical Contest, and preceding that by a local contest, the interest in public speak- ing has assumed a position hithertofore unknown. A No occurrence of the year is more gratifying than the action of the Legislature whereby we are soon to have a library in the true sense of the word. The amount appropriated will it the new room handsomely, and purchase enough books for present use. Phe nucleus thus formed will beadded to from time to time. It has its successful ventures, successful for a day, its states- manship, drest in a little brief authority 3 its reverses, crowned by crushing defeat. A vain talk would it 'be to attempt a portrayal of the individual good accomplished during the year, of the degrees of ennobling manhood attained, and the successive' heights of manhood gained. 'These must be inscribed inthe innermost recesses of each heart. Yet it is possible, and indeed worthy of an annual publication that it show forth, in a true light, the deeds and accomplishments of the past year. j The year '83-4 at the Ohio State University has been neither ex- ceptionallyiadverse or advantageous. The college has pursued the even tenor of her way seemingly uninterrupted by events which, to one outside her walls, must have appeared inevitably disturbing. Asa result of her peculiar form of management, she has been subjected to that frequently fatal course--a change of superin- tendency. The reasons, the justice or injustice, and the results of this action, belong to the private opinion of every man, and hence are not a it subject for public discussion. However, in view of our knowledge of affairs then and since, we are compelled to voice the unanimous sentiment of the students, that the removal of Walter Quincy Scott from the chair of Logic and Political Economy, was a serious injury to the Institution, and that his place as an intel- ligent teacher, as a student of advanced ideas, and as a man eminently fitted for developing firmideas of true manhood, will be filled with great and almost insurmountable dihiculty. y
