ODESTY is the primal virtue. of a college student, and the present MARIO editors are no exception. Hence, we would not have written an editorial had it not been required by precedent. We write it ourselves because we know that no one else could do it justice. Yet, you need not expect a self-laudatory article, abounding in praise of heroic labor and thrice-blessed results. The book is before you, and it must speak for itself, since no one has been appointed to that office. A It has come with the spring time and Howe-rs, being of itself a urosebud set with little willful thorns. It has all the verdure and freshness of the editors. Perhaps you may have expected something new or startling, but you will only behold the idio- syncrasies of your fellow student as illuminated bythe divine light of the MAGIC MIRROR, and the gigantic intellect of the editors. Perhaps you may have expected something extra good this year because the number of Fraternities represented is larger than formerly. But we would beg you to remember that it is quantity and not quality which counts, and there are two pages more in this book than in any preceding year. Now that you have partly aired your grievances, we may call attention to ours. We have labored under the new and curious misfortune of having too many targets for our arrows. To note all the inconsistencies and absurd- ities which have been marked by our Argus eyes, would have .--ms --:.m:,f,K--.v.,,,.,,,,,.,,,t,,,,,w,,,.b Hr ,- .. - p, i A ,Y K ,r :rf--'-'fgf-ff-2.4:-51..7-Q..g:.g:g:L,37,'.ij...vf:v..a-.y.J.i:J1u.sumg.1,f.1r-.Ln-1 -- iff H. . S a 7 formed a book entirely too capacious for the size of your several purses. Hence, some of you may have been overlooked, if so, you can send in your application for space next year. Please do not delay in this matter. , W For all advertising favors the editors would beg leave to return thanks. We bespeak the patronage of every student for the various firms represented in this book. Remember that a mutual inter- change is but justice.. We would also make our acknowledge- ments to thesHistorians of the several classes for the kind and very able manner in whichthey 'have complied with our request for class histories. Also, to the persons who sat for pictures, which very materially aided -our labors. ' ' We pride ourselves upon the pure tone of our book, we have strenuously endeavored to debar all those villainous puns which h ave so marred the beauty of former pages. We have immediately banished any indications of the return of former dangerous poetry, and the few lines from our gifted poet's pen will be found as pure and wholesome as heaven 's air, both in moz'-e-ef and execution. We have not beennambitious. We have sought only for fame, for glory and antundying name--not for sordid wealth, fleeting applause or pistols and coffeef' We have not desired to be sarcastic or bitter--only to be funny. If we have not succeeded it will be because you never laugh., For now f'All must smile Elen though they're sad again.'7 V The MAK1o is out. If you like it be sure and say so, if not, please remember that silence is golden. lf you think you could have written a better book, don't hesitate to say so. We know that you could not, and hence We shall not be offended. If you don't think you could have surpassed it, please say so, and you shall have the George Washington medal. If you see a notice on the Presidents board for the editors to appear en perswme, do not smile or wink H I-told-you-so to your neighbor. Charity is kind.
