N In this, it feels itself under great responsibility to com- memorate, and render immortal, those things Qboth acts and actorsj, which will, without a faithful discharge of this duty, go down torposterity in everlasting forgetfulness. -Since the last issue, there have been many changes in the college organism, which point to true, lasting develop- ment and progress. Though we have sustained losses in some respects, the additions and improvements make full compensation. ' The chairs of Mechanics, Agriculture, I-Iorticulture, Political Economy and Philosophy, with a complete and 1fevz'sm' curriculum, places us on a standing equal to any college in the West. A p ' It with infinite Satisfaction that the MARIO presents a differentismtus of college spirit than existed at the time of its last issue. Then, the harmony of the college mechanism- resulted from theplabsence of almost every spirit that should exist in an institution for the complete and symmetrical development of one's character as far as social life is concerned. Such harmony is harmonious death. , Q Now, we see class organizations alive to their several interests, clubs conducive to the muscular, musical, moral, social, religious, and temporal development, associa- tions looking to the interests of several departments of the University 5 and literary Societies, so improved that they 7 . form one of the most powerful moving forces of the College. g Of course, all 'these are imperfect, but they ezrist, and now what is wanted is activity, work, enthusiasm. Another thing has appeared- ' T helLa1z!eWz, which is no mean thing for the college interests. i j As to fraternities-+well, vve'r'a'r'e 'here and expect. to stay, at least for a while gf and, fwhen we die you are all 'most cordially invited to the Wal:e.i You need not, however, on this intimation, begin to learn your requiems. ll ' -, And now, for us ,,a.n'd our book, we beg your patient in- dulgence. The mem- bership rapidly decreased until but I3 remained, interest lagged, and night after night not even the small quorum necessary, was present. On these occasions the usual custom was to hold short meetings on the University front door steps. Gaps occur in the minutes reaching over three months. Concluding that no hopes could be entertained of coping successfully with its great rival until they possessed facilities equal toits, a committee was appointed in May 1879, Which, upon presenting these views to the Trustees, ksecured.,from.this body its present hall, the counterpart of Alcyone hall. ' This was the first step in advance. But Horton hall was then far from being what it is now. It was simply aigreat ba-re room, which had been used by the Military department, and -was surrounded by a long row of blackboards. w The next great step was the purchasing of an elegant carpet, and the kalsomining of the hall, and about this time the vexed question of the admission of ladies, which had all but wrecked the Society in the preceding year, was linallyisettled by the admission of six ladies on the evening of january 30, 1880, a step which the Society has never regretted. Interest is unllagging, and work was never better. - The active membership is now 47, and when it is stated that the members- in- the past two and a half years have invested over Boob ,in the Society, one may gain an idea of ld 't. In the spring term, when '31 Came forth from her hiding place with her straw, hats and rose- wood GQ. canes, then it was that '82 purchased the imem- orable bonny bonnets Qwhich a slanderous member of '81 said .suited '82's complexionj, and herdelicate canes. Here we may observehow the example of '82 influenced the country. In less than three months everyiifth person one met wore a hat similar to '82'S, and twirled a similar cane. Early in the present school year, '82 selected her new officers as below. The class is 'preparing to make this Commencement the most enjoyable one ever held at O. S. U., and most of the recent meetings have related to this subject. l I 2 The Faculty, recognizing the latent talent of '82, has dispensed withwthe usual orator from abroad, 'and has commissioned the Class to take his place. . Since the last issue of the lVIAKIo,. fourteen of our mem- bers have fallen from grace fso' to speakj, nine of whom have sought brighterxrealms in the active work of the outer world, while iive were left in the dismal regions of '83, to mourn and lament the fact, that fate was against them. Three new members have joined the Class, namely 1 -Miss Cora Warner, lVIr. Floyd Davis and Mr. Irvin Linson. Our honorable President Qonce the versatile Mexican Don I-Iam,j reigns over the meetings of '82 with stately serenity, well becoming anaugust Senior, and to him '82 looks up as a bright shining light. Vice President Fay is preparing to outdo the Greeks in architecture-making an especial study of the architecture of the moustache. Columbus is soon to be remodeled. Secretary Glover is as invincible as ever, and from her '82 derives much of her inspiration to do great deCdS. The Historian is too modest to mention any thing more than that he is still very wicked. 1 Prophet Wilgus is in the employ of the Commissioner u 35 If Railroads and Telegraphs. He has an eye on the o , ' Gubernatorial chair, and for this, at least, he thinks life is worth living. Logicypsychology and railroad iron are the subjects of his daily meditations. Treasurer Fassigappreciates the dignity of being 3 member of SQ, as his solemn expression testifies. His thoughtful mien is, perhaps, duento his arduous labors in keeping the complex financial transactions of '82 in a sys- tematic shape. ' . jack McDowel is just as able to toot his own horn as ever before. 4 l ' 4 judge Davis is involved in the fourth dimension of space and can not get out, and no one knows how to find him. Miss Cora Warner is completely absorbed in the con- templation ' of Psychological Mystery and Metaphysical Moonshine. Mr. Linson has been with us but a short time, but he is a man of extraordinary ability. The fact that he was able to loin ,32iupon entering the college speaks volumes for him- PSYChOl0gy and logic are his strong holds. And now,.whi1e we hear in the distance the glad bells of the great W01f1d Pealing forth a joyful welcome, we turn with a pang of sadness to 'our fellow students, and, through the Pages Of the MAKIO, make our last bow and cr f fare- well forever.'l'- 5 . To see the truth of these Pf0Pl1CSiGS, we have but to look at the battalion rosters for the YCHYS 1379. 188o and 1881. In 1879, optional drill, J-1-H oo a the battalion numbered: ofHcers,'ten5 privates fourteen. In rsso, compulsory fi , , tweut ,-two . The present drill, it is tyfue, is not quite what it should be, nor what xve expect it will be next year. We hope to see the time when a student can not be excused from drill by simply Saying, I don't want to drill or I have no uniform. When the reins are drawn a little tighter, -with regards to excuses and absences, the drill will be all that we could wish. At the beginning of this year we started with three companies, but, as the Commandant looked upon his officers, his eye, one day, fell upon a man whom he at once recognized as a brilliant military genius, in fact, a second Napoleon, a man who chafed under the restraint ofa C'czpz'az'n, a man whose noble soul boiled at the thought that he must stand in the line of file closers for a whole year, who desired to stand before his men and swing them around like a gate. The Commandant seeing such a man in the battalion, at once organized a company for him. Thus we hadfour companies. After. a time this officer having learned all p there was to learn in the infantry branch ofthe service, clecidedeto take command of the artillery, whereupon an artillery detail was formed, and the battalion was reorgan- med into two CO'iT1paniesi iWBei'ng'badly inineed of new colors, the President of 'the' University very kindly offered to deliver a lecture for the benefit of the battalion. From the proceeds of this lecture, which was, from every stand- point a grand success, the battalion was able to purchase the Hnest stand of colors ever carried through the streets Of Columbus., . A? And. by bicycling, leave them l -to mount, to ride,- A y, more 1-and by a ride. to find we end The headache and the thousand ills That flesh is heir to,-'tis a recreation Devoutly to be wished. This modern vehicle has brought health and vigor to many a pale-faced student. and has enlisted enthusiastic description and recommendation from physicians, lawyers. clergynien, artists, merchants, editors and literary men, and from men in every avocation in life. Rev. Marcus D. Buell, giving to the public press an account ofa vacation trip of several hundred miles, on his bicycle. refers to it as a conveyance as romantic as the Boston mail coach of our grandfathers. and as novel as Sieman's electric car. . ' t :Many find their only exercise in a. morning run or evening spin on the bicycle: or. perhaps. an occasional holiday excursion. To them the country within a radius of 50 miles around. becomes an El Dorado. But for the summer vacation, by the sea shore or at the mountains, 'around the lakes or down the valleys-wherever one may choose to go-the bicycle bears the wheelman, free as a bird and jolly as a boatman, through all the beauties and dive-rsities of natural scenery. It is the land yacht, the canoe of the over- land highways. - . The Columbia Bicycles have earned the foremost popularity of any in the world. Thousands of them are already in use in this country, and their perfect wheels spin over the roads of every country to which modern com- merce extends. The finest implement of gun manufacture does not excel in mechanical Bnish and scientific accuracy, the fine bicycles of this largest and best appointed bicycle manufactory in the World. t , Descriptive literature, testimonials. etc., and an elegant 36 page illus- trated catalogue sent to any inquirer.
