arms: and Marlene Meeker. news reporfer-we pressed furfher on: for by now we had realized fhaf We Finish fo Begin and defermined fo make fhis our moffo. By some sfreak of luck a rich deposif of valuable ore was discovered in The Cusfers' Lasf Sfandf' Several weeks were spenf here, and fhen we fraveled on again, sfopping iusf long enough fo have a scrap-paper drive fo raise more funds for our expedifion. Affer a shorf skirmish wifh Indians af exam fime, we found ourselves a liffle nearer our goal. Gold rings now adorned each hand as a symbol of our quesf. Onward, sfill on- ward was our cry! In May. as skies began fo clear, we enferfained some fribes of friendly Indians who had helped us on our way. Yes, we have learned many lessons from fhe Indians. and warm skies above remind us fha? The quesf is yef ahead. And so-wifh renewed vigor on go fhe Forfy-Niners! Wifh 'rhe changing colors of fhe fall season, came also fhe lasf lap of our iourney fo fhe Wesf. Twenfy-six miners were all fhaf were leff of fhe original fhirfy-one, and fhese were defermined fo find fhe gold of California. New leaders: Dallas High, Presidenf: John Sigler, Vice-Presidenf: Joanne Sidle, Secre- fary: Ardyfh Prichard, Treasurer: Coral Taylor, Annual Edifor: Pearl Bolen- baugh, News Reporfer: and Carolyn Agler, l-lisforian. The expedifion sfopped fo fill fhe wafer barrels af an oasis and were enferfained by one of fhe following caravans, who were following us. On and on and fhen California! The land of promise-a golden goal is iusf wifhin reach. l-lere we come fo fhe end of our journey-fhe gold of educafion is ours.

THE Glllll RUSH Thirfy-one would-be miners enfhusiasfically shouldered fheir picks and shovels on fhaf brighf Sepfember morn and sef off in search of gold. Yes. fhey were fhe Eorfy-niners. They had long heard if said fhaf gold is where you find if, and fhey were surely going fo find if if anyone could. The leaders of fhe expedifion were Dallas l-ligh, presidenf: Coral Taylor, vice-presidenf: Ardyfh Prichard, secrefary: and Edsel Brown. Treasurer. Along fhe way a carnival was held for all fhe caravans, each selecfing ifs own candidafes for King and Queen of fhe fesfivifies: we selecfed Paffy High and Edsel Brown. Lafer we sfopped af a pool whereif was rumored gold had been found and fhere selecfed an annual queen, Bar- bara Walls: however, someone else had preceded us: and we were forced fo confinue our search. In '46 we sfarfed on wifh renewed vigor: a rich vein had been discov- ered by fhe caravan ahead. Gold! gold! was our cry. New life was added by new leaders: Pearl Bolenbaugh, presidenf: Edsel Brown, vice-presidenfg Joanne Sidle. secrefaryg Carolyn Agler, freasurerg and Alice Mae Krugh, reporfer. By fhe side of fhe road we picked a whife carnafion for our class flower, and flew our newly selecfed banner of purple and whife. By fhe second half of fhaf year's iourney we had picked up miner John Sigler. We also had a Chrisfmas parfy af Phyllis Faurof's fo pep up our spirifs. Toward fhe end of fhe second year, several gave up hope of ever finding gold: fool's gold had deceived fhem foo many fimes, and 'rhey decided fhaf if was of no use. So Sepfember found iusf fwenfy-six of fhe original Forfy-Niners in search of gold. Wifh new-leaders-Dallas High, presidenf: Carolyn Agler, vice-president Joanne Sidle, secrefary: Ardyfh Prichard, freasurerg Coral Taylor, hisforian: Lowell Sfemen, sergeanf-at
