COP: May I see your driver's license please? KID: Ahh-yeah, here you go, officer. COP: Would you step out of the car? Over on the curb. I KID: Wha-what did I do wrong? COP: How much did you have to drink? KID: Just a couple beers. Why don't you let me go? Be cool man!! 4 COP: Stand back. Put your feet together, head back, arms outstretched . . . t was as if he knew I was a kid and it was Friday night, and my car looks X kinda funky, so he hassled me for my eft headlight being out. He thought that was'a good' excuse to pull me over and see if I had any Illegal Substance in my car. I was stone :old sober and drivihg perfectly, but he still tad to hassle me. A local officer who stakes out the streets surrounding the campus was known as Stone face. Almost every morning he pulled over -Q.. ' - s. either a parent delivering kids or a student for unsafe turns or other illegal actions when often times the only thing they did wrong was being born in '66 or just going down the street with Stone Face on it. lt's not hard to understand why cops were suspicious about students, since a recent survey in Los Angeles City Schools estimated about 80M of high school students had tried pot and some 95'Ai had tried alcohol. lt's not hard at all to get the stuff. Just ask a friend who has connecfions and you score. The same senior said, f'lt's not worth it, get- ting high before class. I keep my partying to the weekends. ' Weekend drinking and weeklong recupera- tion also were common. Joining the formation of such clubs as the Daquiri Girls, Pleasant View Pals, and Schnapps Sisters were for- mal ways for students to get together and pass the time on weekends. I would come to school pretty bombed and just, trip out on myself and everyone else. It I .Q . B I I S . J' I 'I J- ay if T' X 1 B S+... X 0 Q . ..,.3,. was like a personal joke. Commented one obviously unnamed student? , The senior explained his drinking habits over the three years at OVHS like this, In the tenth grade I was trying to get accepted and feel big now that l was in high school. Enioying the freedom and out-of-school activities in- cluded going out and getting drunk. In the eleventh grade I had the most fun because I had a lot of friends that I met the year before and we'd party a lot. But in my senior year it was like I had outgrown that stage. I still drank, but it wasn't like just going out to get bombed. I concentrated more on passing so I could graduate and on making serious plans for when I go out. Lesser evils on campus were large pools during pro football games and World Series games. Pots ol S18 and S32 were paid to win- ners. ln addition students made one on one bets. - San Pedro H.S.
