Ohio 1915 Bridgeport, Conn. 1916 liumr X ' ernon, Ohio Elected by the Akiiuni t Deceased, October iS. 1919 }6l The Alumni Association THE Alumni Association is the main connecting agency be- tween Oberlin and her grad- uates. This connection it main- tains in a number of important ways. The Alumni Magazine, offi- cial organ of the association, is full of things that all Oberlin people wish to know% news of their classmates and friends; campus affairs, undergraduate, faculty, and administrative; a reading list sug- gested each month by faculty mem- bers. Dr. Wager ' s page, articles of historical and other importance — all of these offer entertainment, information, and a small means of continuing one ' s education. The Magazine is one of the things that an alumnus is most unwilling to do without. Another of the major activities of the alumni association office is the promoting of local chapters in more than fifty cities and centers in this country, Hawaii, and China. Many of these are very active, with extended and excellent programs. Their connection with Oberlin is kept vital bv visits from the alumni secretary and by faculty members, by the showing of Oberlin moving pictures, and by a large corres- pondence with the association office. The Alumni Association sponsors class reunions at Commencement John G. Olmstead Secretary time and the two vearly home- comings. It is the collecting agent for the Shansi Memorial Associa- tion and the publicity bureau of the college. In addition to these, it main- tains a file of all graduates with their addresses. It is in general the clearing house for alumni matters of all sorts. For the voung alumni, it is es- pecially a valuable ally, being most glad to furnish letters of introduction to alumni established in the communities to which they go, notifying the local chapters of their coming, whose members will gladlv help them become estab- lished. Mr. Benson, engraver and idea wizard, climbed into the little window in the chapel tower twenty seconds before a Plain Dealer photographer came puffing up the stairs, and from that imusual angle took the picture that appears on page 31. For the first time, interesting pictures of all the faculty appear in the Hi-O-Hi. On page 2.98 begins an invaluable supplement to the Fusser ' s Guide. The natural-color pictures near the beginning of the book were produced directly from projections of color-sensitive autochrome plates — a process used only recently in commercial advertising, and probably never before in a college annual. Every line printed in type is in Garamond, a letter of beauty and character. The story interest in the pictures and the emphasis on vertical lines are adapted from modern advertising. Every effort has been concentrated upon the essential content of the book. There are no gorgeous division pages. There are no gilded accessories. Barnes, worn from six months ' strenuous athletic work, was unable to maintain his previous year ' s standard, althoui ' h he did amass 57 points. Hubbard and Service followed as point winners. On the track the team was well balanced; the field men, with almost half the events in their charge, tallied but 119 of the team ' s 330. Ypsilanti, in the first meet, indoors, at Ann Arbor, took all firsts, all seconds but two. Still no great power, but balance and potentiality, show ed in a triangular meet with Ohio Northern and Akron. Oberlin totaled more than her opponents combined. Of victory against powerful Wesleyan, there was slight hope — less when Barnes was unable to make the trip. Although Cover cleared 12. feet to win the pole vault, Service took the mile and 880, and the team ' s score scattered well, Wesleyan mounted 86 points to the Yeomen ' s 47. I U I m ] Of three relay teams sent to the Ohio Relays, the sprint iiiedlev team, without its anchor man, won an uncon- solins tiffh. Davis ' s tall over the last hurdle, Service ' s defeat by Motley, the loss of the broad jump bv half an inch, any of these breaks going the other way might have changed about the three points that cost Oberlin its dual meet with Wooster. Over Reserve the win was decisive. But dopesters, on the eve of the Conference meet, were not too optimistic. Early high point of the meet, Barnes ' defeat in the lOO, was made up for by the mile. Handicapped early by lack ol experienced catchers and Butzberger ' s sore arm, play was inconsistent. Develop- ment of Adams, catcher, and after his in|urv, of Ficken solved one difhculty. Hard work by Kiracofc, starting nearly cverv game, met the other. Cotton was at top form in the most interesting game of the season, a i-i tie with Wooster. He allowed three hits, struck out nineteen in sixteen innings. Butzberger ' s hitting featured this game, as it did many others. Among the new men the work of Meinhold, second base, Irvin, first, and Barr, third, was outstand- ing. Oberlin linishcd the season with 5 games won, 5 lost and i tied. Oberlin won over three traditional rivals by clean sweep scores, among them Wooster. Case was defeated h six men abreast. ' ictor - in the Big Six ended Muskingum ' s three year supremacy. Oberlin ' s strength lav in the uniform abilities of eight men, con- stantly shifting position in a season-long struggle to find a place on a six man team. Between Service who won all races but ' psilanti, and the last man, never elapsed more than a mmute. But among the others. Miller, captain, Shipherd, Gladieux, Dunham, Ashe, Irwin, Mau, none able to demonstrate superioritv. Seven became letter men. Six return. Service is captain- elect. Finish pj The football season was not outstanJini ly successful. Four games were won, four lost. It was a new experience for Oherlin. holder of tradition of football greatness. Earlv prospects were good. Ten returning lettermen gave Coach MacEachron a strong nucleus, a man for each position. But things went wrong. Oberlin ' s experienced ball carriers were injured. The burden of the ground gaining was put on the shoulders of new, inexperienced men. Coach MacEachron built, however, a superb line, feared bv all the Conference, outplaying all opponents but W ' ooster. The backheld, despite handicaps of green- ness and lightness, playing with the help of this line, actuallv gained more ground than all of its opponents but Wooster and Miami. Oberlin lost the breaks as well as many of her men. Heartbreaking to lose were the games against DePauw and Mt. Union. Against W ' ooster Oberlin was outplayed, against Miami did not play its best. The 7-2 defeat of Akron, a last period score started by Beattie ' s 40 yard run, was to spectators the high point of the season. Meinhold was injured, never got in, Butzberger, crippled, was soon out. Brooks, only remaining veteran, was hurt. Beattie, how- ever, more than fulfilled expectations. Kept in every game for sterling kicking, his 65 yard punt against Reserve meant victory, he was worked hard, helped fill Butzberger ' s place. Knepper, likewise did not fail, tackled and blocked splendidly. The new men were light, inexperienced, yet played hard, surprisingly well. Hyle was the heaviest, 163, fell victim to the jinx, was soon injured. Augustine was the outstanding find. Possessed of a great spirit, he made good gains, worked well on defensive. Miami was his game. Thomas proved shifty, lacked only confidence. Henry suffered likewise from newness, was a brainv quarterback, one of the best tacklers. ' •c I I i ' -90 A great share of credit must go to the line, the best that OberJin has had for years. With an all-Conference center and end, the other also mentioned, with the toughest guards in the Conference, and tackles who were in every play, there was no star. Despite discouragements there was never any break-down of spirit. It was impregnable on defense, powerful on offense, alert, followed the ball, blocked punts, won games. Mt. Union was its greatest game. They tore to pieces a line outweighing them 15 pounds, deserved victory. Gowdy, all-Conference center, inspired the team, was elected Captain. Holder, White, Brann, Crouthamel, guards, led interference, were a great blocking group. Merryheld, Adams, Ferguson, tackles, broke up plays. Novotny, end, combined size with speed, figured as pass receiver and ball carrier. Laird, at the other end, was strongest on defense, a line blocker. His spirit won him recognition as all- Conference, made him Captain-elect. One has been lack of coaching help. This year he was aided bv a com- petent staff, johnnv Fleming, backfield, ilsson, ends. The dilhculty of getting enough time on the held remains. Next vcar there will be but six lettermen returning. With the addition of a group of this year ' s new men the outlook is not dark. Regardless of dope, there will be a good team. Much has been said of the spirit of Oberlins teams. It is note- worthy. Also worthy of praise is the training and personality that calls forth that spirit, the influence of Coach MacEachron. Never rullled, never losing their heads, they played a tine defensive game, allowing no large score to be made against them. Good in passing thev had as many shots, in most games more, than their opponents. Failure to make them good, especially to make free throws good, uncovered the chief weak- ness of the team, erratic shooting. Oberlin won 6 games, lost 9. The margin of defeat was small; average score per game, opponents 14.1, Oberlin 11. N ' ictorious over Chicago in a well played pre-season game, the team lost the opener against Kenvon bv a heart-breaking, last second score. The iirst half of the schedule was U.3 1 disappointing to supporters, dishcartcniiii, ' to the team; games lost bv narrow margins, only Case and Reserve beaten. Not until Ypsilanti did the team seem to lind its shooting eye; kept it to sweep through the last three games decisively. On the team there was no star. Barnes had his best season Barr captained well, was high point man. All hur Meinhold are Seniors, will be lost next season. To take their places Coach MacEachron groomed a team ol promising Sophomores, Locke, Kilmer, Ransom, Bohrer, kept his eye on a strong Freshman team. I 1-4 I A. R B.irr Barnes Allensworth Stalcy Scockcr Mcinhold ' S I THE past vcar, the second under Dr. Nichols, saw the Intramural Divi- sion develop rapidlv. It can point to near achievement of its aim. opportunitv for every student and faculty member to take part regular- Iv in some form of sport. It is estahiishini the tradition that the afternoon from 4:00 to v o shall be given over to active recreation, all taking part. The Intramural Division offered, each season, a widely diversified program. . hvays there were 14 to 10 sport activities in progress. Each season found joo to 600 men participating. It reached from 80 to 90 percent of the student body. Beginning with the Freshmen during Freshman Week, supervising class, house, facultv, and voluntary sports daring the year, and providing for an Alumni golf tournament in the spring, it became complete, all-inclusive — a vital part in men ' s life. Intramurals are familiar, estab- lished, well-organized. Development was along several lines. Im- portant was perfection of the competitive man- agerial plan, voluntary student managers work- ing in a progressive organization for certain definite awards. Senior Managers, highest rank, largelv responsible for smooth running of sched- ules. Were Neubauer and Hook. One rank lower. Juniors. Clough, Payne, Brickley. Student officials were used during the year, proved a success, and will continue. Int )rmal facult -student sport received atten- tion. Competition was arranged in golf, tennis, vi)llc hall. handball, baseball. I Soccer, new to Oberlin, bid fair, in its second year of introduction, to become a regular intercollegiate sport. The Intra- mural Division is trying with it the experiment of making v a r s i t y participation the natural result ol intra- mural development. From class teams, a team was picked to plav Illinois and Western Reserve L ' niversitv. On like basis, Reserve was met in handball, basketball. Competi- tion was informal, ver friendlv. likel to continue. At the end ot the winter season, the second Intramural Festival took place. It is permanent, and becoming larger each year. He has witnessed the progress of this school until it is now one of the tincsi schools of its kind in the entire country. It is one cf the few schools of business training in the United States having the college entrance requirement. It offers a two-year Business Administra- tion Course, a Secretarial Course, a Stenographic and several other courses. There is a great demand for college graduates who have the practical business training. PresidextJ T Henderson Make Your Education Practical SUCCESS comes much more quickly to those who have the tools of business who can step into secretarial positions through shorthand, typewriting, and accounting. This year quite a number of Obcrlin College students have been taking our courses along with their regular work. A better plan is to remain another ear in Oberlin and make thorough preparation for business, office, and secretarial positions. Few college graduates have such training and as a result there is a great demand tor their services. Our Employment Department is glad to coojXTate with the Bureau of Appointments in placing graduates in desirable jxisitions. OBERLIN SCHOOL OF COMMERCE, Inc. j T. HcikIltsoii, I ' rxsidcnt 47 S.
