TC THE SENIORS OF 1949 iiCommencement is an aptly chosen Word. The very thought of it is dear to every student Who is about to complete a prescribed course of study. Symbolically, it seems to say to the student, You have Worked hard to reach this goal. You have successfully passed your examinations. Now you are ready to go and begin life.'l ii Commencement! some students answer, and I am throughf' For too many persons commencement ends in just that Way. They are through, through with all useful beginnings. Then follow the end of study, the end of purposeful planning, the end indeed of successful endeavor, of aimful vision, of clear horizons and of strivings toward a goal. But this is commencement in reverse. P1'ffi:Commencement really means the time of commencing to act, to begin! May this meaning of the Word be yours-Seniors of '49, This is your commencement of life in a World that has nearly lost its way. Live nobly and purposefully then, for such living gives poise and stability to all areas of life. Act thoughtfully and aimfully, espec- ially in the matter of improving life-situations. For such actions you will need the manners and motives of the Lord Jesus. His way al-one satisfies the inner, deeper cravings of the human soul. M:ii:iiCommencement is your real beginning. Begin well. Begin with. your commencement to do all of those things for which your training has prepared you. Wait not for some better start: begin where you are and under whatever circumstances you may find your- selves. If you begin on the Lord's side and remain, you will know only success, for already He has overcome the world.
