SliiiiiiiiiltiltlttliltiMlllllillitlikiiiiiii Xiiiiiiiiiii 8 TC THE SENIORS OF 1949 iiCommencement is an aptly chosen Word. The very thought of it is dear to every student Who is about to complete a prescribed course of study. Symbolically, it seems to say to the student, You have Worked hard to reach this goal. You have successfully passed your examinations. Now you are ready to go and begin life.'l ii Commencement! some students answer, and I am throughf' For too many persons commencement ends in just that Way. They are through, through with all useful beginnings. Then follow the end of study, the end of purposeful planning, the end indeed of successful endeavor, of aimful vision, of clear horizons and of strivings toward a goal. But this is commencement in reverse. P1'ffi:Commencement really means the time of commencing to act, to begin! May this meaning of the Word be yours-Seniors of '49, This is your commencement of life in a World that has nearly lost its way. Live nobly and purposefully then, for such living gives poise and stability to all areas of life. Act thoughtfully and aimfully, espec- ially in the matter of improving life-situations. For such actions you will need the manners and motives of the Lord Jesus. His way al-one satisfies the inner, deeper cravings of the human soul. M:ii:iiCommencement is your real beginning. Begin well. Begin with. your commencement to do all of those things for which your training has prepared you. Wait not for some better start: begin where you are and under whatever circumstances you may find your- selves. If you begin on the Lord's side and remain, you will know only success, for already He has overcome the world. Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchmen wczketh but in vain. In this fast changing age, restless with activity, bristling with extraordinary devices, and befuddled with new ideas and philosophies, it is very easy for traditional Americanism to be pushed into the realm of the commonplace . Often, in keeping pace with this striding world, the fundamentals and the framework for our spiritual advancement are shelved. In this breakneck pace we have raced headlong into a push-button world, void of our fundamental be- liefs. Everything not scientific is relegated to the commonplace. To- day, the world has reached a position where science and human inge- nuity have brought it face to face with despotism. Where can one turn? Who has the answer? What has happened to this, our civil- ized world? Through prophetic eyes let us pierce the dark clouds of despair and hopelessness, looking beyond the mountains of difficulties, beyond the rivers -of sin, and let us vision our eternal hope, the paradise that we have been anxiously awaiting. Think of stepping on shore and finding it Heaveng of taking hold of a hand and finding it God's hand: of breathing new air and finding it celestial airg of feeling invigorated and finding immortalityg of passing from storm and tempest to an un- known calmg of waking up and finding it Home! Such is the goal of the class of '49, Our sights are set, our aim is true, the trigger is cocked, and we are ready for the firing line of life. We shall run and not be wearyg we shall walk and not faint. Through the aid of the Spirit of God we shall not only come out of the commonplace ourselves, but we shall lift the world with us. -Clinton Warren. These freshmen were very talented and had some unusual hobbies. Almost every person could play some instrument such as piano, violin, organ, clarinet, and saxophone. Just as many had vocal talent. Among the hobbies enjoyed by the members were stamp, coin, and poem collecting, airplane modeling, embroidery and knitting. The remainder of this class participated whole-heartedly in many different sports. Having passed from freshman rating, we entered into the sophomore rank. Into our ranks came a group of men known as the Veterans of VVorld War II. Being true seekers of knowledge, they plunged into school work with all they had. The veterans added spice and variety to our class. Having visited many countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Islands of the sea, they have an abundance of experiences about which they love to tell. Even though they had traveled extensively, they managed to come together as a sophomore class of Oakwood College. As a Junior class, our membership decreased with the years. A group of ambitious young women entered our class as Pre-nursing students, who plan to minister to the sick. Under the capable leadership of our president, Samuel Paschal, the class progressed. The main event of the year, the Junior-Senior banquet, was a great success. The spirit of whole-heartedness which characterized the group then is still with the class. The Senior class was organized and held its first meeting early in December. The members are pursuing the following courses: Ministerial, Education, Pre-nursing, Business and Pre-diatetics. The activities of the year will consist of a picnic, a hike to the mountains, an entertainment by the President, and a banquet. Our aim is To find a way or make one. Christ our chief Pilot, and we I-Iis master crew is our motto. With our goals set for eternal life, we can and we will strive to repeat Paul's triumphant words: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. -Eleanor Collins. CLASS ACTIVITIES Through the years Oakwood has held to its original purpose, to send forth men strong to think and to act, men who are masters and not slaves of circumstances, men who possess breadth of mind, clearness of thought and the courage of their convictions. -White. In harmony with this statement the college strives through its extra-curricular activities to promote a three-fold plan of education which will include the development of the spiritual, the mental, and the physical powers. Through organizations and clubs of various natures, unusual opportunities are offered the students in training for effective leadership. There are several organizations on the campus that offer opportunities for students to exercise initiative. The Gamma Sigma Kappa, a relatively new organization uses as its motto, Honor, Fi- delity, and Courage. The officers, all seniors, are Zeola Belle Germany, president, Elizabeth Carter, vice- presidentg Dorothy Whitehead, secretary, Lucille Thoms, assistant secretary, Helen Wagner, treasurer, and Marian Bradford, chaplain. As an outgrowth of the Young Men's Betterment Society and the Excelsior Society, the Epsilon Sigma now stands as the official club for the young men. Its aim is that of elevating the cultural, intellectual, and spiritual status of the young men. Louis Offlee is the president of the organization. The Ministerial Seminar chose Lloyd Watson as its leader during the first semester. The organization sponsors a Ministerial Association, a Bible Instructors and Teachers Club. Samuel Thomas is assistant superintendent of the Sabbath School. In this organization students receive practical experience in Sabbath School work as superintendents, secretar- ies, statisticians, teachers, pianists, and choristers. Two seniors, Clinton Luckett and Dorothy Whitehead, are members of the executive staff of the Missionary Volunteer Society. The Oakwood Chapter of The Future Teachers of America have as their motto, They that be teachers shall shine as the brightness of the firmamentf' Nelson Bliss is president. Other clubs and organizations include the Colporteur Club, Junior Medics Club, Inter- national Relations Club, Oakwood Chamber of Commerce, Spanish Club, Arts and Crafts Guild, and Kappa Gamma Chi. -Dorothy VVhitehead Joseph Christian. .Nw M WX mwwf SNAPSI-IOTS ww, .Jw 5 if ,ff Q77 f 3222:- 11335 ':5?Z:ai'- .- be ,' 'AW' if 4 7 35735 ' f J ww-m M 54 4 ' , K. Every alum- nus of this institution is in reality a tape measure by which the insti- tution is measured. As a tree is known by the fruit it bears, so a col- lege is rated by the graduates it produces. The reputation of Oakwood will rise or wane by the support that is given it by its alumni. It is the privilege of everyone who has passed through the cor- ridors of Oakwood to share her glories as well as her responsibilities, for anyone who shares her glories most bears her responsibilities best. Oakwood exists for her alumnig her alumni should exist for the high moral standard and lofty christian principles set forth in this institution. Let us as loyal alumni rise to the cause of our Alma Mater. Let us do all we can whenever we can, wherever we are, to promote the Spirit of Oakwood. Let us not be exiguous in our support, let us be prodigious in our sacrifices, and we shall make Oakwood a bigger, better, and more efficient house of civilization, where the mental, phy- sical, and spiritual powers of men shall be moulded into a perfect whole. E. E. ROGERS, President of Alumni Association.
