Al The Oakville Chamber of Commerce Award is made each year to the graduating senior, who, in the opinion of the faculty, has best exemplified the qualities of scholarship, lead- ership, and citizenship. Since the announce- ment of who has been declared the winner is not made until the evening ot the gradua- tion exercises, the policy of publishing the picture of the preceeding year's winner, which was inaugurated in last year's Tillicum, is here continued. l933 v i 34 35 '36 37 '38 '39 lv M' 'V Jr, ,Q- an f , C2 kgs Q4 'VT Scfboc HOP QX4 N rf! When school reopened in the fall of 1958, it was found that one or two memebrs of the class were no longer with us but there were one or two new faces to take the places of those who had gone. The class continued on its merry way, some members taking part in athletics, band and glee clubs, The following year the class found itself in the pos- ition of upperclassmen but didn't let the dignity break its spirit. Two of the boys played on the basketball team that won second place at the stste tournament and several others played in the championship band. The Junior play, UA Ready Ma de Familyh, was very successful and was given a second time in place of a group of one act plays that was to have been given. The Junior - Senior banquet was a big success and the 1940 Tillicum was the best in recent years. During the past year the class has staggered a little under the added dignity that goes with the term Senior , but even though bloody its head is still unbowed. Many members of the class have taken prominent parts in all school activities as will be seen by turning the pages of this book. ff ,qui I w 'y ... 4 is Lois Balch Edward Damitio with f l74'j419vwWY X74 'W s 4 fv I , y .Of ' QV 1-64 w4lilnw Jim Beeler Phyllis Benthien Mary Devlin Elsie Dix Seniors Quin N' 'Wa 'lf X 'E' N fS ' ll '- Ny! r , 7 RV ' ,f 4' Betty Couch Edward Erickson Marvin Everson u , fm' kj X ,N , w r ' .dxfg , .X , ,fx -V .LW 5 K , ' ,W Iv, ' 5' 'IL +L M'2f:vv-0 o are H 4511 , , ,Q wr .1 , . Juniors The performance of the two main functions usually under- taken by the Juniors, the publication of the school year book and the staging of a Junior play were accomplished by this year's class in a manner calculated thoroughly to cast credit on themselves. As a further claim to tame the class might point to the more than proportionate number of Juniors who have taken part in all school activities. At the present time plans are being laid for the annual banquet when the Juniors act as hosts for the graduating Seniors. FRONT ROW, reading left to right: Nixon, Beeler, Watson, Hunter, Korbut, Jackson, Doerge, Lauderdale. SECOND ROW, reading left to right: Peters, Sudano, Stinsman, Brenna, Hall, Heath, Baker. Sonhomores The only activity which is undertaken as a group by the Sophomores of Oakville High School is the party given tor the incoming Freshmen in the fall. However, many members of the class have acquited themselves in a highly credible manner in school activities. Several of the boys turned out for football although they were a little light to compete with the upper class boys. Two of the boys made the tirst basket- ball squad and a number played on the second team. Some of the boys are playing on the baseball team, and several ot the girls are active in band and glee club. 1 X x ,r, ,,. We found that there are some diffeeences in the game we were used to playing and this new six-man game, and as a result didn't place as highly as we might otherwise have done against these other teams that have been playing the six-man game in the past. However we picked up some of the tricks of the game and should do better next year even though we are to lose a number of players by graduation. W X if' f 1 rensmrirmeni For the second censecutive year Oakville won the right to represent the South West HB0 League at the State Tourna- ment in Seattle, thus establishing a record for the league. Two other teams, Castle Rock and Valley, have each attended the State Tournament twice, but have never been able to re- peat the trick two years in succession. After losing a play off for first place in our league to Pe Ell we entered the sub-district tournament at Chehalis as the second place representative from our league. In the first game we drew Castle Rock, a team that had been going great guns all season, and was the favorite to win the sub- district. Our team changed their plans for them however, by beating them. From there we went on to win the sub-district winning from Boisfort and Cathlamet. The following week we won the district tournament by beating Illwaco, Woodland and Gathlamet in that order, and for the second straight year entered the State Tournament as a decided under-dogb Running true to the precident established last year however, we knocked over the first opponent, Walla Walla and entered the third round by defeating Port Angeles on the sec ond day. By this time the fatigue of three tournaments in as many weeks was beginning to show, and the boys lost the last two games to St.John and Yakima, giving us sixth place. Charley Sheaffer was named first string all-tournament center at both the district and sub-district meets with Jack Walters winning the first team forward positions. Charley was named second team all-state center for the second time by a committee of sports writers, although he was placed on the first string of an unofficial all-star selection made by University coach Edmunson. Although we shall miss the seniors on this year's team, Sheaffer, Walters, Everson, and Beeler, there is every pros- pect for another good team for next year with a lot of very promising material coming up. ' IBASEEAER Although baseball season is only about half over as this is being written, Oakville promises to have one of the most successful seasons enjoyed for several years. The boys bloss- omed out in brand new suits they could act as ed the season off and Montesano. At Oakville having beat Tenino Rainier. Tenino has beaten ,. . . . ' . v-M i t .im-i:2'Z'E'.
