SENIOR ACTIVITIES 0 The High Senior term of a student's high school career has always been con- sidered the most important of all the six or eight terms he spends in a secondary school. It is his last chance to become a school, a class, or a club officer, to join clubs, to try tolredeem bad grades, to enter into school life. If he has already been or done these things, he feels his last term more important because he knows the poignant mixture of regret for things about to be lost forever and anticipation of new things to be gained. To all students this term is important because of its feeling of time's passing and because when it ends the era of one's dependence on others, that last memory of childhood, comes to a close also. And besides all these more or less unconsciously felt reasons for one's last term of high school being important, there is the one that all High Seniors would immediately name if they were asked why it is important-the importance it lends to the High Seniors themselves, the specialthings that are done for them, the feeling of excitement and pleasant activity. At Oakland High School there are four memorable occasions for the Seniors, Senior Day, the Senior Dinner, the Senior Ball, and Graduation. As this is the High Seniors own special book, some description must be made of each of these, their own special events, that in future years they may not be forgotten. Senior Day-This is the only one of the four events previously mentioned which is not for the High Seniors alone, for Low Seniors, too, participate in this very gay occasion. This term Tuesday, November, 24, was chosen as Senior Day. The High Seniors decided to be famous persons or nationalities, while the Low Seniors were comic strip characters or hill-billies. These costume choices produced exceedingly varied characterizations, as the Senior Day snapshots which are to be found in this book will attest. The High Seniors, otherwise known as the Ickies, won the events of the day from the Muckies, or Low Seniors. The girls' paper bag and balloon-popping contests, tug-of-war, relay and bicycle races, the boys' horse and rider contest, and the nipple and bottle contest, in which both boys and girls participated, were won by the lckies. The Low Seniors won the boys' tug-of-war and obstacle race. The brawl was not heldl Some of the events were held seventh period in the auditorium, while the remainder took place on the field after school. Fifth period there was a dance in the auditorium, fourth period having been the lunch period. The Senior Dinner-Held Thursday, December l7, in the school cafeteria, the Senior Dinner was judged a very pleasurable experience by all concerned. Rosemary Grimes, president of the class, was general director of plans for the evening. The theme of the dinner was Italian, the menu consisting of Italian food, while the decorating committee provided red and white doilies at each place and candles burning in the centers of the tables. Norman Crane, vice-president, directed the entertainment, which included songs by Bud Ghiglieri, Rodney Palmer, and Ruth Terkelson, a comedy skit by Cloyd Dawson and lim Warren, and the reading of the Class Will by Audine Allan. Dancing to records in the auditorium followed the dinner. The Senior Ball- This formal dance, to which only High Seniors and their guests are admitted, was held Friday evening, lanuary 8, in the school auditorium. Graduation-The cap and gowned Seniors bade goodbye to Oakland High School Friday evening, Ianuary 22, in the auditorium.
