We say good-bye to the 0. H. S. Much is the sadness we cannot express; How we toiled, and how we worked, How we played and how we shirked; And to this we must confess, We wish to fulfill in our career Our motto, The top for the Mountaineer, In spite of hardest tasks to do, In spite of trials we must go through, Our faith shall triumph o'er our fear. For carried on the wings of the Past, Throughout school history to the last, Our name shall stand out brave, and bold, This reputation will always hold, Through sunshine or stormy blast. Farwell class mates, and friends so dear, You have stood by us for many a year; We are leaving you now; our task is done, You must continue what we have begun, Though you think we're leaving, in spirit we're here. “Aor: ‘etna wi euad oe “Mrowedlt etbsaae: i } ‘ 5 Na ont Lede see es in ai Cid ve afete be | i RR «aa Titi aft Some ie RD 2 Ree pom e rd it Lo Pie i ye ND Lok CO anes aes dotiw eal ie Sowell 7s anol ONh suk C8 beooge BD e hice eet 4 a B10 art Cit: eet tages, on ow. {ange Sodnas ow eeonkes ade OR UM ,boanawy ov god Buc , Se€ ge ye ba oun s we ev Won fet Hopede BOLNes GRow ow saad of ie MOUS Keo ag bet aah a4 of ‘ew on” toongean we ane eae OA rt rhe: 00 Ogos OF tuned 9 oe) HUET Ov = te 8 8 «CAG Boo toto Kear; se2F eft bo ently a4? so bok'vt £9 eee UAT ot yiosiad’ Woorse dae me abit ditty Pe UR tr bate $8 cisae, RYT’ ior Ss aoe evo hae eae wltetoger, edad mnrote: 0 Be ons Ow pana bee - aud oe eaoko iow oS eS hd BAG SOR Pia Dd beote awd ar I ccna teed 4 ‘_ieg | one wine £ wee side iS Svesd e: “pape are: see oa ae ae lesa ‘ i j + 1 perp dnl i rent ee ee eee - . After reaching the top of the hijl we proceeded along Green Street tc the Palace of Eéucation; well known to us as Oakland High School, Upon entering the door, we gazed around, While standing thus eutranced, a tall dark-haired gentlemen, who was later known as Professor Kolb; came into our midst and directed us to our Class Room. The first procedure was to separate the sheep from the goats, and we were informed that hereaftsr the sheep would enter the building by the front way, the goats by — the siie ertrance, This day was the beginning of a long, tedious; scul- wrecking journey which lasted tor nine months; during which time our ranks were depletei. A : total of tweniuy-six left us to ssek other fertunes in dis- tant lands. One of this group lingered on the harbor of matrimouy and sailed away on the ship of Love. Others of these became involved in the dizzy swirl of the business world, The remainder took the position of being as much like the idle rich as possible. After this gruesome period our litgle band stood again on the threshold of the High School Building under the nomenclature of the cheeky Sophs. Our valiant group was increased at this time through the entrance of Francis Grubbs. Then during this year came the crash with the puzzles of Geometry, the perplexity of Physics and the intricacy of English, and Manual Train- ing. During this year we gained a trifle more liberty in performing our school duties. We were granted the privi- lege of electing our officers and to engage in the social part of school more than when we were Freshmen. There being a small number of boys in our class, we managed to place one of our men on the Soccer Team and several more on the Track. At the beginning of our third year as usual we had te give up some of our former classmates to other envi- ronnents, for different reasons, On the seconi day we entered upon a new course of life. In the Commercial Department we were confronted with serious probdiems such as Typewri ing; Shorthand; and Bookkeeping. Our class was also represented rae the other sports in which our school partic- pated. Beginning the last lap of our journey, the happiest year of our school, we were no longer a- fraid of teachers with four eyes and hair parted in the middle, The first party of the year was one given by Freshnon, at which the Seniors were the uninvited guests, Here we treated the Freshmen with such rare feats as Electric Shocks, Green Water and Molasses Sta-Comb. | The next great event in the History of our Class was when Miss Katherine Conley was appointed Principal of our school. Then began the most successful term of our school life. It was by her help and encouragement that we, the Senior Class of the 0. H. S., have been ablo to publish The Oak. We now’ leave the rest of our trials and tribulations, as well as success, to be told by the Class of 25. The dozen or more pale disheart- ed patients shivered as the wind whistled through the many openings, and played hide and seek under the in- sufficient coverings on their cots. Private Brown was on duty, and when he saw a fellow comrade shiver and huddle under his grey blanket, he piled more wood into the broken Stove. I myself began to get cold and the objects around me began to grow dim, when there appeared before me an old man--grey and wrinkled. It was Father Time. JI asked him what year this was, and he said, My poor boy where have you been? This is '28.. Come,--we will go and see what has been going on since you have been in France. Here we will roll these stones together until we have a regular mountain. That is well done. Now come with me to the highest point. There, do you see all? Al1, O Pather, but very dimly. Can't you pronounce some magic words so that I can see and hear more clearly. Certainly, I will do so, (and the magic words were said.) Can you see now? Oh yes, I see evarything, and hear quite plainly. Nothing interests me so much as the dear old town of Oak- land and the 0. H. S. But say Father, this is nothing new. Couldn't you say something different, and let me see the Seniors ten years from now? Just as easy. Now you may look into the Future. Ah! How strange! There is Darwin Martin who made such @ success in school teaching that he has continued in that profession. His pupils call him Uncle Weenie. So Marshall Brown has taken up toe dancing. I am not at all astonished when I think of the s12e of his And this is Harold Ream strolling down Main Street, but he can afford to stroll since he became the Leader of The Holy Roller Society, for the reduction of Fat people. For when laws, as old as the ages, Are overridden by man, And the good advice of the sages, AS well as the infinite plan Which keeps all men in the running In courage, the same as in fear, Is left for the base and the cunning-- The price for-that action-is dear! O Nation of joy and gladness-- The promise and hope of the earth, Beware lest a shadow of sadness Creep in, and mar your mirth. Lean toward the things that are mighty. Take hold before you are gone. This means you! In all organizations, regardless of size, there are three types of individuals--the type who pushes, the one who pulls, and the one who does nothing. This is especially applicable to schools. At some time sooner or later each student, whether a member of a lower or higher institution of learning, will be required to contribute his finest work, his best efforts, and his hearty co-operation to make that school one of high Standard or else be ostracized. The student who pushes is’the one who will go through the school year without malice, hate or prejudice, prepar- ing his lessons from day to day in a thorough manner; one who will accomplish to the best of his ability and task asked of him; one who will contribute toward any cause re= gardless of who will reap the glory and honor. Then comes the student who pulls. He performs his duties; participates in all assignments to the best of his ability, although he may be physically or mentally unable to compete with a pupil of the first class. Even though the task is disagreeable, unpleasant or contrary to his tastes, he performs it willingly. Last comes the individual who neither pushes nor pulls. He assumes the antagonistic attitude toward everything that is suggested or promoted because he isn't the chosen leader. He won't push, or’even pull, but remains a drone, a detriment, an obstacle, a disgrace in the path of the more progressive. He can't push and he won't pull, he should get out of the way; he should be excluded because he isn't’ contributing his bit toward the welfare of his class, roon, or school, ‘So, if you can't push, why Pull, and if you can't pull, GET OUT) f ff a oe q 7 ’ an ih Ar ant Un Weekes 5) Bele Piha thy hol ae ek ho SLAC Heth hut ! ys Oi oda od . an tee fret Hees Hoy et peste thea + aea Her no bat Fe Paibead nue santa au ACM hay ye ale ate i t 4 ; . We have the reputation of being very gocd house -keerers because our home room is usually clean and reat (when company comes). Speaking of personal charms, we have nineteen pretty little bobbed hair besuties and thirteen belles with flowing dressés. The mejority of which have just passed the stage of curls-on-the-nesk and feel quite superior to the infant class, althcugh we do not entirely forget that memorable night when we were admitted to the 0. H. S. Louise Shreves is a very tall girl with short skirts and curls dangling around her head. I fear she is an ex- ception to the extremely dignified Grown up Sophomorese ” Pauline Burns went on a short journey the other day. Her sweetie went about the same time. It looks rather suspicious, doesn't it? Margaret Rathbun is the niece of Professor F. EH. Rathbun. Maybe that is why she flunked in history. Isabel West is a wonderful dancer; that is, when she doesn't step on your toes. If you go the movies any night you will see Auburn Nine and Mildred Van Sickle {not alone, of course). They always heave prepared their Algebra. Prances Cogley comes to school every morning all wound up. JI don't think she ever runs down. Helen Browning is a very motherly little lady. She is always afraid her little brother, who is a Commercial Junior, will stay out late at night. The officers of the Sophomore Girls! Class, elected in October, are: President------- wee eae ee ---Meadge Duke Vice President-----------------+--- Gladys Gonder Treasvureor-- --- -+.--------- -s------ Isabel West Secretary------------ woe --------- Ruby Willets These officers have faithfully performed their duties and I herdly think we could have made a better selection. As it is almost time for promotion, we are 311 looking forward to the time when we shall be Juniors of the 0. H. S. M. Burns. One day early last September the school house was inveded: by a timid crowd of Freshies, all ready to run at the slightest alarm. We had left ovr old familiar Grammar School and entered this great place where every- body was strange to us, but we soon found that the older inhabitants were big but harmless, end within a week we began to fecl quite at home. All during the fall we be- came bolder and happicr. We had a small Christmas party and later on we planned a larger one for Freshies only. We all came dressed in our Sunday-go-to-meeting ciothes ani felt very dressed up. The party started out rather @regay. The boys all sat in one cOrner end the girls tried to coax them out. About nine thirty, when we least cxpected anything, we saw an old black cat run across the floor and that means bad luck. So, Of. course, we all were iooking forward to it. Then, in about five minutes we heard a wild rush end in came all the Seniors. They guarded all the doors so no one wes allowed to pass. Then they took us into the typewriting room one by one. One of the girls hed heard that they had an electric cheir for one of the meny entertainments. When Elmus Ream and Marshall Brown came in fox little Helen Wess she said, I will go if you promise not to put me in that clectric chair. My mother seid that I have a weak hears and it might kill me. Then poor Hslen disappeared and there followed an awful yelling which almost scared us poor Kids to death. Helen came cut a lively looking corpse and Strange to say she is still alive and kicking. We all went home with molasses on our hair, but were ell ready to start out the next day. Since that exciting date things have been going very celmly, and we are now 211 looking forward to becoming Grown-up-Sophomores. The first game played with Grantsville, end- ing with the score of 10-9, was perhaps the closest and hardest fought game of the season. The second game with Grantsville was the score of 18-2, and showed the rapid development cf Oakland's team, which played games with Recident and Priendsviile in addition to those played with Grantsville. Wone of these were able to give the Oakland team a good practice game, the scores ranging from 18-2 to 29-6. From this, it may be easily seen that Oakland High School had no real opposition in the entire county. The Team: Center Field- --- -W,. Davis Second Base --T. Meehan Left Pield------- G. The interest shown in this alub is commendable. Its success is due in great degree to the instructor, Miss Ruth Conley. The party given by the Glee Club was 2 great success, and those who attended will long remember it with pleasure. We expect to have a bigger and better Glee Club next year. Some of the students will not realize the benefits of a club of this kind m- til they see what it can do. All students oan give it their hearty support, even though they are not all Carusos or Galli Cureis. This can be done by booming any enterprise undertaken by the club.
