Speech class is more than just a period of speechmaking. Mrs. Holt A true picture of education: one teacher and one pupil in a learning situation. With infinite care and patience Mr. Harris explains and illus- trates a diflicult problem in Mechanical Drawing. 8 discusses the world of the theatre. TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Mr. Morgan points out certain skeletal char- acteristics to C. Wienecke, P. Stortz, and P. Ball. Students in the speech class find the theatrical phase of their work especially interesting. 2 i z 1 l Small pieces of paper, a jar of paste, and a few students under the watchful eye of Mr. Koenig produce attrac- tive works of art. What an active busy place this is! Here the superintendent and his staff plan and supervise the many ac- tivities of all the schools in the Oak Hills District. Here, too, the Board of Education holds its monthly meeting to determine the policy necessary to make Oak Hills a well-run and-eHi- cient district. Telephones ring, people come and go in this important nerve center of our school district. RICHARD W. HERRON SUPERINTENDENT MRS. HELEN ORLEMANN MRS SARA COLEMAN SECRETARY SECRETARY OF THE OAK HILLS CENTRAL OFFICE Two important tasks which affect everyone in the Oak Hills' school dis- trict are performed by Mr. Herron and Mr. Combs and the staff of the Central Office. These two jobs concern bus transportation for the district and the purchasing of supplies. The impor- tance of transportation is obvious to all students, especially those who live in the farthest reaches of the district or those who must depend solely upon the buses to get to school. No less impor- tant is the task of buying books, equip- ment, and supplies sufhcient to keep the schools of the district doing the best possible educational job. HANFORD COMBS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT MR ROBERT BROWNING MRS. ALMA BROCKMEIER CLERK OF THE BOARD SECRETARY MR. WILLIAM M. KULQTAD PRINCIPAL OF UAK HILLS Mr. Kulstad finds that paper work keeps him at his desk many hours during the school day and often far into the night. Here he performs the routine task of signing a check drawn upon the student activity fund allowing some club to make a purchase or pay a bill. i ADMINISTRATIDN - Today's world is a world of automation in which education must keep pace. Largely through the efforts of Mr. William M. Kulstad, Principal, Oak Hills High School became the first public high school in Hamilton County to use the Univac data processing system for report cards and registration. Other recognition has been brought to the school through his published articles in such magazines as Student Life, his work for the adoption of a school ring, the promotion of Tartan Day, and his member- ship in national and state professional organizations. Mr. Kulstad, who received his Master's degree from the University of Minnesota and did advanced work both there and at the University of California, came to the Cincinnati area from a high school principal- ship in Rapid City, South Dakota. He has always had a particular interest in Student Council organi- zations, and this has continued at Oak Hills. At the present time, he serves on the State Student Council Executive Committee representing the Ohio State Principalls Association. For the future, Mr. Kulstad looks toward the es- tablishment of a remedial and developmental read- ing program at Oak Hills, and a well-rounded curric- ulum to meet the needs of all students. Thus, he feels, must the challenge of tomorrow's world be met in the classrooms of today. AN IMPORTANT PHASE OF OUR WORLD Mr. Reece spends much of his time testing and coun- seling Oak Hills' students, especially the boys, who are trying to gain admission to college. He knows that a well-stocked reference library of college cata- logs and information is a necessity. MR. .I. WALTER REECE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. J. Walter Reece is a native Ohioan having been born in Dayton, Ohio. His elementary and high school educa- tion was obtained in Loveland, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University where his major field of study was mathematics with minors in chemistry and physics. The Master of Education degree with a major in ad- ministration was awarded to him by the University of Cincinnati. His master's program included several courses in guidance. At the present time he is continu- ing his graduate work beyond the master's in the area of public school administration. His teaching career started at Terrace Park High School, and he served as assistant principal during his last year at Terrace Park, The next position he held was as assist- ant principal of Anderson High School for two years. The following year he worked as a research assistant for the Cincinnati Board of Education in the division of Research, Statistics, and Information. Then he came to Oak Hills where he is currently completing his second year as assistant principal. MRS. ALICE K. ROBERTS DEAN OF GIRLS Mrs. Roberts checks the absence list carefully to in- sure the accuracy of her records regarding illness absence, and attendance of all the girls in the high school. DEANS DFFER Mrs. Edward Roberts, Dean of Girls, has brought to Oak Hills High School many years of academic preparation and professional experi- ence, including teaching on elementary, junior high., senior high, and college levels. A native of Kentucky, Mrs. Roberts was gradu- ated from Holmes High School, Covington. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Kentucky State College, her Master of Arts degree from Cornell University, and did advanced work at the University of Colorado, University of Kentucky, University of Cincin- nati and Harvard University, where she served as a Graduate Assistant. Immediately before coming to Oak Hills, Mrs. Roberts was Dean of Girls at Holmes High School, Covington, and taught an evening class in freshman English at the University of Ken- tucky Northern Center. Her hobby is creative writing, and she is the author of three books of verse: Bluegrass, Bluegrass, Juniorf' and Bluegrass Seasons, as well as numerous published articles. For the past eight years, she has been a daily newspaper columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Kentucky Edition. Her duties at Oak Hills include everything con- cerning the girls - attendance, discipline, guid- ance, college and vocational counseling, and job placement. COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE SERVICE The shelves of Mr. Martin's oflice refiect the emphasis and importance which he places up- on the use of booklets and pamphlets in his guidance and counseling work with Oak Hills' boys. Last year he also worked part-time as a guid- ance counselor at the Ohio College of Applied Science, a junior college in downtown Cin- cinnati which trains engineering technicians and is affiliated with the Ohio Mechanics In- stitute. His favorite sports are basketball and swim- ming. He is a Red Cross Water Safety in- structor and has either managed pools or taught swimming for many summers. MR. DAWN MARTIN DEAN OF BOYS F' Mr. Dawn Martin, Dean of Boys, has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Education degree in administration from Xavier University, and has fulfilled the require- ments for a Doctor of Education degree in guidance and counseling at the University of Cincinnati ex- cept for the dissertation. He taught English at Withrow High School for seven years. In 1960-61, Mr. Martin fulfilled resi- dence requirements at the University of Cincinnati for the Doctor of Education and had a graduate scholarship. In connection with this, he counselled freshman education students. He worked with var- ious social agencies in Hamilton County in order to place these students for Volunteer work. A LARGE VARIETY OF SERVICES Mrs. Elizabeth Gysin, secretary, finds that her type- writer is almost her constant companion as she pre- pares reports, bulletins, and absence lists as part of her daily work in the high school ofiice. t SECRETARIAL AND HEALTH SERVICES .a 5 f E 3 Mrs. Erlyne Schubert, secretary in the high school office, sorts the great quantity of mail which comes to Oak Hills each day, This is just one of the many tasks performed by Mrs. Schubert during her busy day. Miss Reba Sheppard, school nurse, keeps quite busy tending sick students, examining those returning after absence, and checking the absence list for those newly ill. In addition to her duties here, she serves also in the elementary schools of the district. 22 PROVIDE D LUNCHROONI AND CLISTODIAL SERVICES One group of lunchroom workers prepares pizza for lun Members of the custodial staff : Mr. Leroy Gres- ham, Mrs. Chris- tine Conner, Mr. Nelson Conner, Mr. Arthur Weng- ert, and Mr. Wil- liam Schunk always find enough work of various kinds to keep them busy. ch. The great increase in population and the tremendous boom in school construction have greatly accelerated the need for teachers on all levels of education and in all subject matter fields. Teaching as a career has become more appealing in re- cent years as many young people realize the advantages and opportunities which are offered in this challenging and re- warding job. Three stages of the teaching profession meet here: Mrs. Colgan, busi- ness teacherg Karen Faust, member of Future Teachers of Americag and Miss Melillo student teacher in social studies. MR. TEACHING MEANS INSTRUCTION TEACHElRS GIVE PERSONAL AT'TENTION TO STU DE NITS The primary task of the teacher is instruc- tion, that is, to impart to each student the particular skill or information :required by his class. This is done primarily on a class-wide basis, but time and opportunity are given in each class for personal supervision and attention by the teacher. Some students need more indi- vidual instruction than others just as some classes lend themselves more readily to this type of teaching. Wherever and whenever possible, the teacher gladly gives this individual attention. Mrs. Plate supervises Pat Fritz's work during a practice session in typing class. 27 MR.
