We, the Seniors of O'Dea High School, humbly dedicate this OL YMPIAN of 1952 to the Venerable Edmund Ignatius Rice and his spiritual Sons, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, on the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of their Order in Waterford, Ireland, in the year 1802. This dedication is made with a keen appreciation of the benefits that we and others have received as a result of the efficient labors and personal sacrifices of the members of this Body of Christian Educators. 2 VERY REVEREND BROTHER EDWARD F. ARCHBISHOP OF SEATTLE ff ., . . .,,,. , , . .,. T... .,.. ...... ,.,.. at on on .,...,.. T. llama His Excellency, the Most Reverend Thomas A. Connolly, was installed as the first Archbishop of Seattle at solemn and historic ceremonies in Saint james' Cathedral, on September 26, 1951. This great honor came to His Excellency as a tribute to his tireless efforts on behalf of the faith in this Archdiocese. We, the Faculty and Students of O'Dea High School, offer our sincerest congratulations and implore from the Almighty His benediction upon our Archbishop and our new Archdiocese. 4 1 li I F WWXNH ,Q A MU, -rilllnnpgw HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND JUSEPH P. DOUGHERTY, D. D. BISHOP OF YAKIMA In beautiful ceremonies held in Saint james' Cathedral on September 26, 1951, His Excellency, the Most Reverend joseph P. Dougherty, received the fullness of the priesthood when His Excellency, the Most Reverend Thomas A. Connolly, consecrated him the first Bishop of Yakima. As a priest in the diocese of Seattle, Bishop Dougherty had endeared himself to all, and hence his depar- ture was keenly felt. However, we are consoled by the fact that in his new field of labor, his apostolic heart will find greater scope for its zeal. The Faculty and Students of O'Dea High School offer sincere felicitations to His Excellency and implore the benediction of the Almighty upon his labors on behalf of the spiritual and temporal prosperity of the new diocese. 6 The Book of :he Gosp I Bishop Dougherty offers the frodifionol gift to Archbishop Connolly in 3 thanksgiving for his consecration. 85 is plocedo s, th 'MMM' n e shoulders of Bishop Dough i erfy Archbishop Connolly confers the mifre upon Bishop Dougherty W' 'Ui i I ' I , 1 , H l 'H J 1 H :fo V RELIGION What the keystone is to the arch, religion is to Catholic education. As every stone in the arch fits into its proper place and contributes to the solidity of the structure only when the keystone is in position, so every phase of school activity plays its proper role in the development of the young man-body, soul, and mind-only when the keystone of religion holds the central position in the structure of his education. This is the fundamental truth and the raison d' etre of all Catholic education, from the kindergarten level to that of the doctorate of philosophy. O'Dea High School is just another Catholic high school striving year in and year out to uphold this ideal. 8 t 1 x I r I AQ ea Q 5 ' 3 S' xg , ,Q Q 1:4 W, 5, -iw fn Q- Father gives yo Plea 9' to gun k about. The hoopsters dropped the opener to Edmonds but defeated them later on in the week. Taking to the road for the next two games, they defeated Stanwood and then bowed to Issaquah. At home the Irish ended the year by losing to Port Townsend, Elma and Raymond. Starting off the new year with a bang, the squad downed Lakeside and evened the series with Issaquah. Traveling to Canada, the Big Five easily defeated the Fighting Irish of Vancouver College. Return- ing home, they won two straight at the expense of St. Martin's and Foster. After losing to Prep, they more than retrieved their fortunes by winning seven in a row: Bellarmine, Vancouver College, St. Martin's, Foster, Seattle Prep., Bellannine Cseeond gamel and Lakeside. The pace was set in the 9-2 victory over the White River team in the first matches of the season. Against Edmonds, always a strong competitor, the Irish Leather- pusbers took a close 5-4 decision from their rivals. The Fi htin Irish next S S invaded Mount Vernon where they dropped 5, won 3, and drew 2 in a close con- test. ln the return match with Edmonds the Irish won 2, lost 5, and drew 1. A highlight of this season was Bobby Santos' K.O. in the first contest, which took place at the Elk's Club. The outstanding ability of the Freshmen was also noteworthy. The climax of the highlights was the winning of a berth in the State Tournament. Although Bernie Clark, Bob Santos, Bill Smith and Morris Smith will be missed because of graduation, their places will be taken by a good supply of ring-wise boxers, anxious to uphold O'Dea's well-established record. ls fx . 93 BOXING Back Row: A.
