Four Years at N.H.S. JUNIOR YEAR We began our iunior year while still recuperating from our first experiences with final exams as sophomores. The most outstanding social event was our iunior dance which was a tremendous success. Decorations for The Broomstick Bounce featured a grotesque witch toiling over her steaming cauldron. This was the best dance our class had given to date. All during the year it had been hinted that the Junior High building would become the new Nutley High School These rumors were confirmed by a report in the town newspaper. This brought about much discussion and many problems. One of these problems was the question of which of the two buildings would decorate our school rings. Opinion varied widely so, in our usual democratic manner, we took a class vote on the issue. The maiority ruled that a print of the old high school should appear on the rings. The end of the year was especially important, for we realized we would not be returning to the same school We had mixed feelings about the move. We knew that next year would be important, as it held a challenge for us to meet as seniors. SENIOR YEAR Well we were back where we started We had been going around ln circles ever since our freshman year Due to the change in schools we found ourselves back in the rumor high building This time however the scene was completely different for now we were blessed with all the conveniences for which we had suffered as freshmen Instead of noisy workmen falling plaster and freezing hallways we entered a modern world of well lighted rooms and splendid facilities Our senior class undertook many GCIIVIIIGS to fatten its purse One of the most successful of these was our Senior Beneht The Junior Miss production involved long hours of work for everyone connected with lt However their efforts were successful Their performances were met by peals of laughter and applause The refreshment stand was another profitable business venture During the football season many of our brover sensors wandered mto the wllds of the oval trying to sell their delectable goodies Socially we could not have been happier The dances and other such CHGIYS went off well but our senior prom will prove to be the best of them all As our semor year draws to an end we look back on the fun we have had and are proud for we have done our 'ob well We the first class to graduate from the new Nutley Hugh School have successfully helped to establish new traditions and splrlt for all future classes to follow , s . . s . - . - . s - 1 o s - ' I I s s I 4 1 . a Q s I I s I - s sa. s o -ss H 0 ll - - H - s H u u s s n ' I n 0 s 1 s ' I s . . s 1 s - a - 5 1 u s I u . s I s ' I f s I so se s s

FRESHMAN YEAR We began our high school years full of enthusiasm and anticipation. Our first year of high school was unique, to say the least. We started the year off right with an undefeated fresh- man football team. Our basketball squad was not quite as successful, but the students always attended the games loyally. Our student-faculty basketball game was a high- light of the season. If we remember correctly, the faculty managed to win by some stroke of luck. All through the year, we were slightly handicapped by the absence of a gymnasium, auditorium, heating system, passing bells, and window panes. Because we had no gym, the girls did not have an opportunity to model their strik- ing maroon gymsuits and flattering gray anklets, Mr. Broffman served as our alarm system, blowing his whistle regularly every forty minutes. In spite of all these obstacles, the year had its bright sides. One of the most outstanding events of the year was the freshman class election. It was a political upset, complete with barnstorming, posters, and stump speeches. Then toward the end of the year we began to look forward to our freshman party and graduation. The party, to be held in the gymnasium, was to have a tropical theme. As the time of the dance came closer, everywhere we looked we saw mountains of paper flowers, Girls were making them in study halls, between classes, lunch hours, and in any spare time they could find. Other girls had their living rooms looking like greenhouses. However, all this effort was not in vain, because the night of the party the gym really looked like a tropical island. Our graduation was a solemn but happy ceremony. We were anxious to 'be part of the high school across the street but saddened at leaving behind so many won- derful experiences, Star Dust From SOPHOMORE YEAR Our sophomore year was a second beginning for our high school years. We had finally graduated into the exalted, ivy covered halls of Nutley High School. No more .lunior High building for us, or so we thought. We were even slowly becoming accepted by the upperclass- men. This year introduced many firsts to us. This was our first of voluntary contributions in the form of dues which helped to support our class throughout the next three years. The school otfered a realm of extra-curricular activ- ities in which we all had the opportunity to participate. The boys had their first chance at varsity sports, football, basketball, baseball, track, and crew. Through thetpirited encouragement of the cheerleaders, twirlers, and band members lsome of whom were sophomoresl, we inspired these boys to do their best for N.H.S. Our sophomore dance, The Harvest Moon Hop , had a good theme and a good band. However, the dance was not too crowded. This was due mainly to the epidemic of Asian Flu that emptied the school for days. A few hardy souls managed to survive the epidemic without a day's absence, but they were rare. And then as June came closer, the schooI's halls were once again emptied, this time for a much needed summer vacation,

The hours of practice that went into its per- formance showed up on opening night as the play was presented before an enthusiastic audience, No one will forget Judy as she tottered on her high heels in front of an admiring Fufty, the surprise of Mr. and Mrs. Graves as they returned home to find a man in Judy's bed , Ellen and WiIlis's meeting, and Lois with her varied admirers. Mr. Duff's phenomenal patience with the cast, scenery designers and make-up committee helped to calm the nervousness on November 2l and 22. Midnight rehearsals, missed cues and Dairy Queens were all symbolic of our Junior Miss. ' mf. all ? 5 s . f 5 l 4 5 s
