SPOFLS Football This year Nutley High duplicated the seven-two won and lost record compiled in 1954 and ended the season, ranking fourth in the entire state. A wobbly start included victories over Central and arch rival Belleville la season highlightl and loses to Orange and top-ranked Montclair. From that point on the Maroon Raiders, soundly coached by Sandy Phillips and his staff, were unstoppable. Pulse stopping, last second victories were recorded over Mor- ristown and Bloomfield while Passaic and Clifton provided easier opposition. A 7-0 victory over Kearny, another spine-tingler with another last minute goal line stand, ended a successful season. Leading Nutley's surge were mainly seniors. Stalwarts in the line were Jack McCormick, Peter Mortimer, Jack Tomasulo, Pat Polci, Chubby Lemma, Benny Heinzen, Lou Pietoso, and Nick Figueriedo. Sure of receiving post season laurels are Leon Adessa and Sam Stellatella, the latter being named the greatest ball player in New Jersey for the i954 season, Other Seniors who aided Nutley's cause were Andrew Jackson and Dave Watts. For back- field strength Nutley possessed such top-notch players as Tommy Lewis, Ted Berger, and Barry Desprez. Nutley's attack was most noted for two seniors, Joe Nitti and Joe Casha. Nitti gave the Maroon a break-away threat, while Casha was the key factor in Nutley's passing attack. Add- ing strength to the defensive backfield were Jim McGinley and Don Stoddard. COACHES: S.
