In 1895, the Colorado Cooperative Ditch Co. began work on the 13 mile long ditch that initiated the devel- opment in this area. This ditch continues to be a necessity to people yet today. In 1938, the United States Vanadium Corp. --a rival of the VCA--located and built a model town CUravanj on the approximate site of the old jo junior mill which belonged to the Sanders Chemical Company around 1923. Uranium Vanadium mining became the major source of income from that time on. In 1953 the Union Carbide Nuclear Corp. bought out the USV mill at Uravan. In 1878 the first cattle were brought into the Paradox Valley by Fred Mayall. Since that time, cattle ranching has played an impor- tant part in Paradox history. Mining as well as ranching has played a role in the history of Paradox. The first mine in Paradox was the Cashin mine, discovered by Tom Swain, in 1895 or 1896. The first store was estab- lished in Bedrock in 1898. This store is still standing and being used today.
