In 1878 the first cattle were brought into the Paradox Valley by Fred Mayall. Since that time, cattle ranching has played an impor- tant part in Paradox history. Mining as well as ranching has played a role in the history of Paradox. The first mine in Paradox was the Cashin mine, discovered by Tom Swain, in 1895 or 1896. The first store was estab- lished in Bedrock in 1898. This store is still standing and being used today.
