In the following years more people settled in the area. In 1910, the Standard Chemical Co. came in and set up the coke ovens below Naturita. They then brought in ore from outlying camps. The Radium Co. of Colorado and the General Vanadium Corp. of Baltimore, Md. , also set up camps here, but these did not last long. Although these companies did not stay, mining was destined to be the major occupation in the Naturita area. In 1930, the Vanadium Corporation of American QVCAQ located a 60-ton mill just below Naturita. Mining flourished during the early 195O's, dwindled during the 1960's, and is again experiencing a renewing in the mid-197O's. 2 Introduction ,Ae- jx .jr Milling and Processing at U 4444444444444444444444444-4-4444444444-444444444444-444444444444444444444-V-4444444444 Levi Rael, Janet Dedrickson, Scot Schierman, S Lewis Rael with Uravan mill in the background. In 1938, the United States Vanadium Corp. --a rival of the VCA--located and built a model town CUravanj on the approximate site of the old jo junior mill which belonged to the Sanders Chemical Company around 1923. Uranium Vanadium mining became the major source of income from that time on. In 1953 the Union Carbide Nuclear Corp. bought out the USV mill at Uravan. Much mining and chemical work has supported the growing population of our area. 5 C f +R it ,c,,Nc ,...,.,,, we C if - r Introduction 3 U - Ranching 62 Mining 4444 4444444444-444-V-44444444444444444444 .Y ,,m,,,.,., ,Yj,,,, , Y,,Y ,AYYVYA . This ditch continues to be a necessity to people yet today. Without this ditch, the mining, ranching, and farming, the major industries here today, would not exist. In 1878 the first cattle were brought into the Paradox Valley by Fred Mayall. Since that time, cattle ranching has played an impor- tant part in Paradox history. Mining as well as ranching has played a role in the history of Paradox. The first mine in Paradox was the Cashin mine, discovered by Tom Swain, in 1895 or 1896. The first store was estab- lished in Bedrock in 1898. This store is still standing and being used today. McCormick, M. Best, R. Risch, D. Skalla, E. Elliott, G. Hibbert, J. Blair, P. Woods, B. Newland, B. Dyer, I. I-loldman, J. Price and Coach Hershberger. Six-Man was played in our school until the year 1952, with eleven man starting in the fall of '53, Shown, FRONT: I. Reiva, l. McKinney, F. Morgan. BACK: B. Skees, R. Franks, and F. Graybeal. NHS football was played south of Nucla, on a field at Biglin's ranch until a new field was built in '52, Pictured is the first goal post placed on that field, which is now the football parking area. ' Homecoming of 1975 started off, with a bang from the be- ginning of the Week. Monday was sloppy day, Tuesday was generation day, Wednesday was Red, White, and Blue day, Thursday was honky! hippie day, and Friday was spirit day and also the annual parade. All the classes and clubs entered the floats they had made during the week. They were judged and the Seniors won first between the classes, the VICA club won first between the clubs. Even after the loss to Dove Creek the spirits were still high and the dance was a memorable event. During half-time the excitement and anticipation of waiting for the moment when the queens would be crowned was almost unbear- able. When the big moment finally came Mrs. Cheryl Mier was crowned queen and the candidated were: Shawna Williams, Leah Blake, and Debbie Brickhaus. .I.I.I-I-I.I-,-.-.-.j.j.I.I.I.I.I.I.I-I-I:,:.:.I.I.I :.:.I.I:I:H:ii.:.::: .-.g.g:g15g2gIgl:1:-:-:-:gc-Q291gZg1g-:-:-:-:-:- .... -:-:-:- 5:g.g.g-:-'-:-Z-'-:- 554- 5.-5--:-' -243:-23:-25252: . . . :-1-23: - .3-,:g-,4-,-.-4.3.5.3 :2:2Z2!E!5151f5fI 1:-: I. Many others helped: Leslie Ament, Rob Steward, Jerry Williams, Sherry Been, Michele Watson, Julie Esquibel, Phyllis Hammond, and Deb Brickhaus were conixibuting to the winning trend also. The year was fun, and we will remember it well. We ended the year with a sad note, hoever, with our coach's resignation. For you to love her while she lives, and mourn for when she's dead. It may be four or five years or twenty two or three. But will you, till I call for her take care of her for me? She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and shall her stay be brief. You'll have her lovely memories as sorrows for your grief. I can not promise she will stay since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down here I want this Child to learn. I've looked this whole world over in search of teachers true, And from the throng that crowd life's lanes I have selected you. Now will you give her all your love, Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come to take her back again? I fancied that I heard them say, Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done. For all the Joy the Child shall bring, The risk of grief We'll run. We'll shelter her with tenderness, We'll love her while we may, And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay. But shall the Angels call for her much sooner than you planned. We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand. Edgar A. V MJ ft , C 'L Jo 5 Karen Kay Dedrickson Ifaren Larry Dwayne Sutherland Larry, Cars, engines, and country music are what you were. That is only an outward appearance inside you were a sensitive person. You would never let anyone but a few know this. For instance, when you broke your leg in a motorcycle accident, you were hurt and your bike was wrecked, but you went on as if nothing had changed. You were quite the lady's man, very charming and easy to like. You were proud. Girls were never far from you. There was one girl who was very special to you, however. We talked about the two of you many times. You liked to have fun. Whether it was drinking with the boys or dancing, of working on engines, you always seemed happy. A country song was always near- by to keep you singing. You liked to sing along. just the other night you were sitting at the house pretending to strum a guitar while you sang. Good times, Larry, is what I'll remember most about you. You were having a good time when God de- cided to take you from us. Don't worry, there are more where you are now.
