KJIPFICICRS XVilliznn Selilznisker, Presitlentg Betty list. Vice-l'resitlentg Dorothy Fish, Secretary: liernzml Hznnrnontl, 'lirezisuretx 4A Class History, On a sweltering Setpember day in '33, four hundred thirty-five turbulent freshies jammed into the confines of the Nott Terrace High School auditorium and officially became the Class of June '36. This group of noisy but discreet youngsters was the largest ever to become a part of the school. For several weeks they might be found running into the ends of blind corridors and becoming entangled with the white shoes of upper classmen, but finally they settled down with the aid of Mr. Gray and his orientation classes and under the guidance of Mrs. Lang, the class dean. The class stepped right out in front when one of their number became the noted and hunted jambo of the Terrace Guard Jamboree. The purpose of the gigantic man hunt was to repeat a certain formula to the person who you thought was Jambo. VVho would have thought that the innocent freshie with hair under the influence of grease and face recently dabbed with soap was a dangerous and debonair criminal? A few weeks later the Class of June '36 responded to the call of the wild and elected jambo, in the person of Sheldon Ackley, as its first president. Dorothy Rice was named vice-president. Dorothy Fish began her long tenure of office as secretary of the class, while William Schlansker was elected treasurer. The class first got together at the Freshman Frolic. Freshies slicked up for the occasion, rushed from home to auditorium to girls' gym and back home, and in the meantime made plenty of noise and had plenty of fun. The first part of the program, presented in the auditorium, was home talent night for the class. After that, dancing and punch were featured below decks with more people appreciating the latter. In fact, so many appreciated it that it formed in puddles on the dance floor and slowly trickled down the stairs. While the bookbag had been the badge of the class in its freshman year, this was supplanted the next year by red suspenders and high water pants. At the beginning of the junior year the class elected new officers. William Schlan- sker was raised from the office of treasurer to that of president. Rose Salamone was made vice-president, and Dorothy Fish was returned to the secretary's position. John Flickinger was named to succeed the new president at his job as treasurer. Near the end of its Junior B year, the class accepted more than its own respon- sibility in the administration of student government. Leading the rest of the class was Richard Hill, who was elected president of the Student Council in January and re- tained that position for over a year. Twelve other members of the class have made their mark in the governing body of the school. A member of the Class of June '36, Sheldon Ackley, is now the member of the council with the longest term of service. It was at this time, in the middle of their Junior year, that the class lost the serv- ices of one able dean, Mrs. Lang, who took a year's leave of absence. At the same time, however, the class acquired another able dean, Mrs. VanVranken, who very graciously agreed to act as substitute. Amid the clamour of committees, a junior Prom, which was the pride of the class, arose. lncidentally profits from the big event substantially increased the amount in the class treasury. The Debating Team, in a moment of weakness, decided to wear blue polka dot bow ties on the days on which debates were held. Thus some days teachers and pupils alike had sudden diseases of which spots before the eyes were a symptom. Paul VVallach, member of the debating team, talked himself into a trip to Oklahoma City where he entered the extemporaneous speaking department of the national tournament, and Where he had the honor of reaching the semi-finals. In the senior election of officers, the class expressed its approbation of the work of William Schlansker by renaming him as their president. After an exciting campaign Betty List swept into the position of vice-president. Dorothy Fish for the third suc- cessive time was returned to her secretary's job, while Bernard Hammond was set to guard the exchequer of the class. The Students' Store made a great spurt in its financial importance to the school under the managership of that red headed Hrebrand, Bernard Hammond. After battles with competitors outside of school, this super salesman more than doubled the normal earnings of the store. The Madrigal Singers took several journeys to show off their prowess before the rest of the country. However, it has been rumored that Edward Pulaski, a member of the group, was caught crunching peanuts in the Metropolitan Opera House. Perhaps Lawrence Tibbett does it too. The Terrace Tribune staff and others who frequent the Tribune office made a novel experiment during their senior A term. In line with modern trends, they estab- lished a Mental Nudist Colony because they realized they were all off. Since its beginning three years ago, the Class of June '36 has always been excep- tional in athletics. One of its members, Richard Slade, was fast enough to come in in runner-up position in the National Championship Cross Country Run. The repre- sentatives of the class have won nearly every inter-class competition held by the school in the three years. Another senior who has brought credit and honor to the school in the world of sport is France Francis, prominent four letter man. The Class Play was more serious this year than most presentations had been before, but when, during rehearsal, Dorothy Fish grasped Don Gifford's lapels and, looking up into his eyes, said, I am your mother, the whole cast doubled up under the chairs. Elections for Youth Week were held at which Richard Hill was elected City Judge. The court itself was held successfully, but Dick had trouble getting himself extricated from the voluminous expanse of the judicial gown when it was all over. During a violently stormy session in class meeting at the beginning of their last term, three hundred forty-five members of the class rose up to defend their right to have a yearbook separated from that of the senior B class. Or rather, three hundred forty- five rose up in indignation. However, a few weeks later the editors for the first Annual at Nott Terrace were announced with Don Gifford as editor-in-chief of the senior A section. In spite of the early opposition to the idea of a combined Annual, the class set to with a will to make the first Annual a success. This is the result, if it's half as good as the work on it warrants, it's pretty good. Bird 4B Class His'I'ory Like a great eagle soaring into the blue, the ultra-modern clipper ship, Class of January '37 , took wing on the first leg of its round the world flight. This spacious hotel of the air was built by a vast army of artists and technicians especially to the specifications of the 4B class. Built to accommodate two hundred sixty-eight people and equipped with every facility known to modern science, this immense, many-motored airliner started on a flight unprecedented in scholastic history. The able pilot, Henry E. Bird, fclass deanj lifted the great clipper ship from the glistening snow into the crisp January air. Captain William K. Mulvey, fclass presi- dentj discussed with him the plans for the first leg of the three year journey and acted as guide for the passengers, fclassj and crew Cexecutive committeej. Head stewardess Anne J. VanDyck Cvice-presidentj and assistant stewardess Lorraine Rowe fsecretaryl saw that the passengers were comfortable and cared for the air sick fthose bewildered by the big schoolj. Purser Harry Bourgeois Qtreasurerj took care of all financial matters. The first short hop landed them in France, where, on June 1, 1934, they had their first glimpse of Paris night life fFreshman Frolicl at the Casino de Paris fGirls' Gymj. La Salad fDorothyj thrilled the juvenile audience with her low, throaty blues singing. Madmoiselle Bov6 fGildaj entertained them with the latest continental tap routine. The program was rounded out by the satirical pantomine, 'Cinderella, given by the Sub-Deb club, Uane Hanford, Vivian Livingston, Marjorie Meyers, Yvonne Miller, Carol Robb, Lorraine Rowe, Elizabeth Turner, and Ruth Van Der VVartj. Dancing followed to the lilting strains of a popular Parisian dance band. October 5th of the same year found them in the colorful city of Vienna, Austria. Here the ship's company paused for the final celebration QZA Dancej of the first year of the flight. The high light of the dance was the scenic effect of a bright orange globe in the ceiling which resembled a summer moon. One of the objects of the Hight was to combine participation in athletics with the more routine scholastic work. During the trip the ship turned out many accom- plished athletes. Steven Bush, Joseph DeMeo, john Foley, Lawrence Howley, Edward Trice, and John Malik were the outstanding basketball players. The 4B class also contributed Steven Bush, Robert Carothers, Joseph Cox, Joseph DeMeo, Vincent Gnara, Henry Halka, Wesley Middleton, and Frank Marro to Terracian football teams. VVhile stopping in Leningrad, Russia, for the Interscholastic Olympics, the 4B's who showed outstanding ability for running track were: John Foley, John Eddy, Ed- ward Legasse, Joseph Brennan, Alfonso Mangino, David Lawyer, Charles Kelley, and Edward Mohrhoff. Stopping over for the Inter-Scholastic Davis Cup tournament, Edward Trice, Paul Giroux, and Dana King ably defended the riords of previous Terracian tennis teams. One of the plans in preparation for the flight had been to change officers every third leg of the journey. In accordance with this previously agreed plan, the ship landed in Moscow, Russia, in january 1935, where William Mulvey fpresidentj was made Captaing Lorraine Rowe Cvice-presidentj, Head-stewardessg Anne Van Dyck fsecretaryj, assistant stewardessg and Bruce Watson ftreasurerl, purser. During ,. ax, Maw.. If I. . -'.A-fin,--A yn. url, I 1 .5 , -i,.,i.,g, ?,..,.1.k, ,A .lyk October jack MacGathan took over the pursership from Bruce, who left them to board the good ship, Manlius. . , During June, 1935, the sister ship, Class of june '36 , met with severe storms CRegentsj while cruising over the Black Sea. The load had to be lightened, so some unfortunates Cthose who didn't pass the English Regentsj were taken aboard the Class of January '37 for the remainder of the journey. On November 14, 1935 the ship received an urgent radio message requesting the passengers to petition the Central Aeronautical Board fCommon Councilj for a new hangar Cannexj for better accommodations. All the passengers participated in a color- ful parade fAnnex Paradej demonstrating the needs for the new hangar. Every two weeks the Transport Tribune fTerrace Tribune j was edited by a group of passengers fTribune Staff, Elizabeth Turner, first page editor, Lorraine Rowe, second page editor, Edward Trice, sports editor, Yvonne Miller, fourth page editor, Ruth Van Der Wart, Jane Hanford, Raoul Barbeau, Vivian Livingston, copy desk, Ellen Shirley, advertising manager, llflarion Boll, lllildred Phillips, Augusta Zeh, Richard White, reportersj to present the company fthe-schoolj with the news of their ship and its sister ships. During October their flight was saddened by grief at the death of one of their passengers, Forrest Barber. At Canton, China, December 20, 1935, they held the final celebration Uunior Promj of the second leg of their trip at the Canton Ball Room fHotel Van Curlerj to the scintillating rhythms of Bill Dehey's Orchestra. The third and last leg of the journey began January, 1936 with a final change of the ship's officers. William Mulvey fpresidentj began his third year as Captain. John Eddy Cvice-presidentj became head steward with Dana King Csecretaryj as assistant. Anne Van Dyck was the first woman to become purser. While they were on the last lap of their journey the ship's log fyearbookj was published by some of the passengers and crew fyearbook boardj. The committees in charge were: Lorraine Rowe, editor-in-chief, Elizabeth Turner, assistant editor-in- chief, Vivian Livingston, literary editor, Yvonne Miller and Edward Trice, assistant literary editors, Dana King, activities editor, Evelyn Connolly and llflary Trumbull, assistant activities editors, Mildred Phillips, advertising manager, Charles Mone and Ellen Shirley, assistant advertising managers, Robert Colby, circulation manager, Lorraine Piper, assistant circulation manager, Elliot Harvey, business manager, Ber- nice Dworsky, assistant business manager, jean Stewart, photography editor, Lorraine Matarazzo, assistant photography editor, Patricia Doyle, art editor, Dorothy Salad, assistant art editor. The passengers and crew who are on the last lap of their journey are looking forward to the two crowning events of their flight. The hidden dramatic talents of the passengers will be utilized when the ship lands in Hollywood. They will present an outstanding dramatic effort Cclass playj in that city sometime during November, 1936. The three well-spent, glorious years will be climaxed by a formal dance CSenior Ballj held in Chicago's Marine Ballroom fMohawk Golf Clubj. The ominous Rocky Mountains fSenior Regentsj still loom in the distance like a forbidding evil waiting to destroy our ship, but all hopes are manifested that the plane will clear the highest peaks and land home safely in january, 1937.
