EEEEEEEEEESESEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA TEMPUS FUGIT Wheii first we entered on the stage Of life. our part was small. With indifference suited to our age VVe cared not for the play at all. As years flew by us, swift as light, YVe read our parts more loudly. VVe listened to the major lines And gave our speeches proudly. In fright one day we gazed about To see our roles were taken. Bewilder'dly we've been pushed out And now the stage is shaken. VVe've lost our scripts-they call it school To other hands they've gone. Yet from these scripts the wisdom gained Is ours to build upon. VVhy wouldn't her mother let her accept jim's bid to the dance? She surveyed the run in her stocking with a dejected air. I'm not too young, she muttered, examining her fingers curiously. Another hangnail ! she said. Moo-oo-oo-ther, where's the scissors? lVIother, she called again. There was no answer to her calls. I'll bet Mother went to dances and things when she was young, said Angela contemplatively. 'Tll have to get evidence or some- thing. Suddenly an idea surged in her brain. Up the stairs of the attic she rang up, up, up! She turned the key in the rusty lock, and opening the door, she rushed in, finally drop- ping to her knees before an old trunk covered with dust. She paused a moment appre- hensively. Then, gaining courage, she raised the cover of the trunk. A sea of cobwebs greeted her eyes. The dust flew up in clouds. She fancied she saw a mouse, but mouse or no mouse, she was determined to get what she had come for. She groped around hastily, her hand exploring. Angela grew excited. Yes, there it was-Mother's scrapbook that Angela had been told not to touch. Angela fingered the old, familiar sticker of blue and white on it, with the words-Nott Terrace. Just then she felt a silk ribbon and pulled it out. It proved to be a sash of bright blue, faded perhaps, but still retaining a tint that suddenly reminded Angela of Mother's eyes. YVait, something was pinned to it. i Angela peered at the paper in the gathering gloom. Slowly she spelt out the words Freshman Frolic, 1932-Girls' Gym+everybody bashful-boys all on one side of the room-girls on the other-glances across-daring Bill Pfeif and Gladys Mudge the first couple on the floor--then Mr. Thompson and Marjorie Burdekin. lllemo-Ann Richards0n's answer3to lVIr. Thompsonis request for a dance- I don't dance with strange boys. -Lovely time. ' X Oho!! ' she gloated. I think here's what I want. Angela turned a page. VVhat's this-a checkbook with a blue cover? Like the other souvenirs, this reminder of school days long past had a paper with a name and date pinned to it. This time Angela deciphered junior Prom, December 21, 1933-Harvey jacolick, escort-Checkbook forprogriimi-1Danced with Fred McCracken QThe next dance or I'1l put that escort of yours on the spotj-Harry Benjamin fMust I always remind you that I have the next onej-Ray Flis-Thomas VVarwick. A knowing gleam dwelt in Angela's eyes. Nlother had been a bowler-over in her girlhood days, hadn't she? The next souvenir was a picture. Angela looked closely. Yes, there was Dad. VVhat was he doing there? She read the title Class Play, 1934, 'Mr. Pim Passes By'. Class History 'lllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllll' .udllllllllIIIIIlllllllllllIllllllllllllu.. The other faces looked familiar too. Wasn't that the Chestnut boy's father? Gee, her Dad was handsome in his days. Hope he didn't forget his lines and blush and stammer as he did the other night in the play at church. And if here isn't Mother's year book picture-and Dad's too. She put the book near her on the floor to take when she went downstairs. Another page of this memory-filled scrapbook was devoted to clippings from the Terrace Tribune. Here was an interesting one. 4B Dance with Billy Page's orchestra -Memo-Where were the 4B's on a night like this? Another clipping-Wilbur Barton elected President of the Students' Council. Wasn't he one of Mother's old beaux? Senior Class Officers: President, Harold Chestnutg Vice-President, Harvey Jacolickg Secretary, jane Gardnerg Treasurer, Ruth Taylor. Hm! What's this? asked Angela suddenly. Yes, that clipping certainly held interest-Senior Ball to be held at the Mohawk Golf Club. Memo-Wonder who'll ask me? Suddenly Angela heard voices below. Hastily gathering up the diary, the one remaining souvenir, together with the Year Book, she scurried downstairs. Halfway down, she met her mother coming up. Angela hid the things behind her back. Angela, her mother said sharply, where have you been? And what are you hiding ? just things, Mother, Angela stammered. Give them to me! her mother demanded authoritatively. Angela counted the pleats in her skirt as she handed her mother the things . She awaited her sentence. No sound, however, came from her mother's lips. Finally gain- ing courage, Angela looked up. Mother's eyes were tender, as without a word, she turned and made her way downstairs. Suppertime came and went, and Mother made no mention of the incident. But that night about 11 oiclock, Angela was awakened by voices, and creeping to the top of the stairs, she beheld a scene that stilled every fear in her heart that she would be punished for her mischief. She beheld Mother and Dad below in the kitchen, their chairs close together, and their heads bent over the things , Mother was saying, with a lilt in her voice, Dear, do you remember that last dance at the Senior Ball back in '35 ? Angela very, very determinedly entered the kitchen. Somehow or other she felt that perhaps her cause wasn't lost. She was going to that dance with Jim after alll Mary Sullivan Marion Swire Class Will The end is inevitable. It is writ in the sands of time. The day is drawing close when we, the class of January 1935, will pass on to the unknown. Therefore, we have prepared our will. TO MR. THOMPSON: We all leave our heartiest admiration. For one man to accomplish the impossible, as you have done as our dean, is the feat of a superman. We can repay you only by saying Thanks TO THE SCHOOL IN GENERAL: John Bigwood leaves behind a host of doubtful English teachers and takes with him that inimitable style he has for misspelling words. Gladys Mudge Charlina Nicol ll l+'s in the Blood Today you, the Seniors of Nott Terrace High School, will experience one of the great events of your lives. Mr. E. O. Hoffman was addressing the January '35 gradu- ating class that was crowded into the small waiting room of the hospital. Now and then one could hear a faint giggle from the rear of the room establishing the fact that Wells Bill was telling Betty Bogardus some of his very best jokes. We are fortunate, indeed, continued Mr. Hoffman, to have been invited here today by Dr. Johnson. A relative of Dr. Johnson has invented a delicate microscope which, when a sample of the patient's blood is placed under the lens, foretells very accur- ately the career for which the person is best fitted. This instrument has been tested with great success, but this is the first time that any great number of people have been examined. Vincent Corbo, always skeptical, said he thought it must be a fake. The remainder of the class, however, showed their disapproval of this statement by immediately freez- ing Vincent with icy stares. At this point, a door, which led from the waiting room to an examination room, opened. Three doctors, one an old physician, the other two internes, stood in the door- way surveying their one hundred and sixty patients. First they seized upon a young man wearing a very bilious hat and escorted him into the examination room. He put up quite a struggle when his hat was taken from him, but he finally quieted down. Name ? Keigher-Raymond Keigher-Raymond Anthony Keigherf' At this point Dr. johnson left the two internes to their own resources and went to help the pulchritudinous Miss Ether, a nurse with whom Doctors Schmaltz and Burke seemed to be getting nowhere. Ray, getting up some of the courage which he displayed when he signed up for his fifth term of geometry, took the needle in the arm like a little man. When they had obtained some of the lad's life-giving blood by this method, they placed it under the super ultra microscope. Hm-, mused Dr. Burke, as he gazed into the instrument, if you don't mend your ways, young fellow, you'll grow up to be a jazzy drummer and no more sinister a fate has befallen any man. Thoroughly alarmed by the physician's words, Ray started to leave the room, resolving never again to keep awake the people downstairs by practicing drum solos at midnight. You'd better get the rhythm out of your elbows with a pen instead of a drum stick. Ray retired well pleased. Carl Landau then stepped up with the suggestion that they save time by taking in two or three students at once. Dr. Schmaltz, feeling very humorous, replied, No, we'll just take these internesf' Oh, young lady, will you kindly step into the examination room? What is your name, please ? Kathryn Shefferf' What is your father's occupation ? Well, I don't know what he does now, but I know that when he was young, he used to be a minor, she answered very quickly in one breath. H'm, I see we have a comedienne among us, mused Dr. Burke as he rattled the tray of shiny knives. Miss Sheffer's face never blanched. Now for the blood test, said he. With a sample of Kathryn's blood under the microscope, Dr. Schmaltz gazed intently into the instrument. I see you have great ambitions to become a famous detective, Miss ShefIer. That's right, doctor. Your last name wouldn't be Watson, would it, doctor ? Sorry, young lady, but if ever I can be of any assistance -1 Dr. Burke returned to the microscope for a second look at the germs in Kathryn's blood. I see two opposing sets struggling in your protoplasm, machine gun bullets and grease paint. Come back in a week, and I'll check you again. Then I can prophecy more accurately whether you will be a great criminologist or a great actress. The next victim Q perhaps I should have said patientj to be ushered in was that personage behind the scenes, the forgotten man, Harold James. When the two young medicos saw him, they realized at once that this was a difficult case, and that there was no time to be lost. Quick, Schmaltz, this fellow has stagiosa manageria. Get the Sloan's liniment. Schmaltz rushed across the room and snatched the telephone. Send an ambulance-quick, he shouted. You go right home and go to bed, advised Dr. Burke. Take a bottle of this liniment every day, and, if you're ever a stage manager again, don't blame us. With the colorful Mr. James off their hands, the physicians were ready for the next pupil to be examined. At this moment, however, in burst Billy Mitchell. It seems that word has leaked out about the good looking Miss Ether, the nurse, and Billy, not wanting to be beaten out, had rushed in and volunteered to be examined next. Billy walked jauntily over and, with a sly wink of his eye, ventured, Hello there, cutie. fPaging Ripleyj . The nurse, startled by the suddenness of the onslaught, flipped back, Nurse to you-rx This last remark held the enterprising Mr. Mitchell in check for a while. In fact it made his blood run so cold that his examination had to be postponed until later in the day. It was apparent that the strain of their task was beginning to tell on the two young doctors. This being the case they thought it best that they each take a Baer's aspirin to keep up their fighting spirit. When Schmaltz and Burke were again at the door looking over the graduating class, Schmaltz spied Alfred Kosberg with his head buried in a book. Let's take him in, suggested Schmaltz enthusiastically. Don't be silly, retorted Burke. You don't want him to show us up, do you? Don't you know there's a bumper crop of high IQ's among the younger generation this year ? In lieu of the studious Kosberg, the two internes selected one tall lean fellow called James Spence. As he walked in, he was humming a song to himself although he really did look thoroughly frightened. When the blood test was in progress, James once more tried to whistle a few bars of Parlez-Moi d'Amour but with no success. Take a look at this, Dr. Burke, said Schmaltz to his associate. I think this fellow has a trace of ink in his blood. Look at those obligato pizzicoto germs, too. It's hard to tell whether this young man will grow up to be a newspaperman or a singer, said Burke. Then he added thoughtfully -or both. This made the fearful james feel greatly relieved for to be a newspaperman or a singer for bothj was the topmost point of his ambitions. James left the room singing Parlez-Moi d'Amour with great gusto, throwing in a Crescendo and a diminuendo now and then for good measure. No sooner had the patient left the room then there was a cry of Fire! from the waiting room. There was a great rush as the terrified students fairly streaked through the examination room toward the street. In all this rush, however, there were two fig' ures battling their way against the crowd. They were rushing toward the fire! The two stripped off their sweaters, which, by the Way, were adorned with blue S's , and began to beat the flames with them. Class Prophecy 'UIIIllIlIIIIlIllIIfHllIlllllIllll' ..........:!l'lWlllllllllllUll'l'e:,,.,,..... i 30 i Within a few minutes the fire had been conquered, and the pupils were returning to the building. As the smoke cleared away, one could distinguish Wilbur Barton and Louis Gaetano putting their sweaters on, while several girls CKay Holmes among them, of coursej crowded around their muscular heroes. Dr. Schmaltz, always considerate of his patients, sized up the predicament of the poor fellows and immediately suggested to Dr. Burke that they let the harassed young men take refuge in the examination room. The boys entered the room and were, according to the usual procedure, subjected to the blood test. VVith such ability on the gridiron you will be able to make your livelihood as foot- ball coaches for a few years, said Dr. Burke, but when you start to slip, your blood indicates that you will become firemen. lt was evident that this did not please Mr. Barton at all, for he left the examin- ation quarters muttering that he knew he shouldn't have fallen off that ladder when he was a baby. But the girls were eager to reclaim their heroes, and they started to stampede. Perhaps we'd better admit a young woman. They'll disturb the rest of the hospital if we don't, said Dr. Schmaltz. Take one who doesn't look as if she carried a hatchet, suggested Dr. Burke. Petite Ruth Taylor was admitted into the sanctuary. What is your father's occupation ? asked Schmaltz. He's in the steam shovel business, was the reply. She Digges a bit herselff' volunteered Dr. Burke. The usual rite was performed upon her. Her blood was placed under the lens. The doctor shook his head sadly. My dear child, -Ruth sniffed indignantly- I see here that you will never grow any taller, but one of your most longed-for wishes will be gratified-your name will not always be Taylor-some day soon it will be changed. Ruth beamed. How often she had complained about how many Taylor's there were in the 'phone book. And now she had the doctor's promise that some day soon- She left the room smiling and happy. jean Cooney was admitted wearing a coat which was very black and very furry. She seemed so attached to the coat that Schmaltz hated to ask her to remove it for the blood test. This, however, was necessary, and Jean graciously acquiesced. You shall become a famous dentist 'curator of bicuspids', said one of the doctors after the test, -famous because your method will be the most unusual in the world. Your patients will become so convulsed by your wit that they will be completely in your power. The children of tomorrow will cry for a visit to Dr. Cooney. Jean seemed completely pleased by what the future held in store for her. She thanked the doctors prettily and left once more enjoying the depths of her very black and very furry coat. The next patient was even more frightened than any of those previously examined, for, by this time, wild tales were leaking out concerning the gigantic size of the needle, which was jabbed into the arms of one and all. Your name is Harry Benjamin, isn't it ? asked Dr. Burke. No, my name is Raymond Barclay, corrected the young fellow indignantly. Oh, yes, I always get your names mixed, said the doctor, although I really don't associate you two boys at all except, of course, in name. After the jab in the arm, which did not hurt Ray nearly as much as he had antici- pated, the doctor proceeded to examine the sample. VVell, Harry-I mean Ray, I see your profession will be concerned with numbers. Gee, I hope l'm not going to be a gambler. No, not that, consoled the doctor. A numerologist ? No - I see it now. You will be a teacher of mathematics. You will collaborate with John Godell even as you have done in all your high school career. This was a great relief to Ray, for he, prepared for the worst, had expected the doctor to say that he would become a radio critic or a one man Mills Brothers or some other queer thing. Next came Margarete F ritze who expected nothing more from the future than to get married and settle down. With the doctor still peering into the microscope, he said, Young lady, there is a trace of ice in your blood. You will become a great skater, but later in life you will run a tea room. Maybe she'll serve iced tea, suggested Dr. Schmaltz. Nlargarete, still thinking that marriage was a better idea, left trying to figure out why she could not do both, perhaps. Suddenly a terrific rumbling filled the air. The building began to sway. Delicate instruments rattled on the shelves. The odor of ether coming from spilled cans was enveloping the room. The instrument which could not be bought for any price was in danger of being wrecked. At this moment Dr. Schmaltz, recovering from the first shock of this horrible vibrating of the earth, rushed to the table and enclosed the piece of mechanism in his arms. He rushed toward the street followed by Dr. Burke. As he hurried through the door into the open, Jack Young, always the practical joker, placed his foot, which, by the way, was enclosed by the orange and brown socks so well known to his class mates, in front of the hastening Schmaltz. Down went Schmaltz. On the ground were the remains of the super ultra micro- scope. This instrument which had required years to construct was a tiny pile of wreckage. Dr. Schmaltz rose to his feet and gazed across the street to keep from looking at the diabolical Young. On the other side of the road, making deafening noises and send- ing tremors through the earth in all directions was the well-known outline of Harry Miller's black and gold Model T flivver. Eddy The Nott Terrace High School Cross Country team again emerged winner of the American Interscholastic Cross Country Championship on Thanksgiving Day at New- ark, New Jersey, where they defeated representatives from 59 high and preparatory schools throughout the United States and Canada. This victory brought to a close another successful harrier season at the Terrace Institution. Other victories included the R. P. I. Championships at Troy, emblematic of the Eastern United States Championships, the Columbia Kirby Cup University Run at New York City, the La Salle Military School Run at Oakdale, Long Island and the lone dual run of the season with the Mercury Club of Albany. The only loss suffered was in the Syracuse Invitation Meet at Syracuse when the Syracuse Central Team won their own meet with the N ott Terrace runners taking second. The Syracuse team was defeated three times during the season, however, and the score doubled on them in the National Run. During the 1934 period Ray Vacca was one of the outstanding runners of the country. He won the R. P. I. Run with 350 individuals taking part, won and created a new record in the LaSalle Run, took seconds in the Syracuse and Columbia Runs and a fourth in the National Run. He and Richard Slade, captain-elect of the 1935 team were both selected on the 1934 All-American Cross Country Team. And these two boys together with Cletus Stamper, Captain Mathew Eggelston, and John Foley comprised the team that took the National crown. The other members of the varsity squad included Edwin Lagasse, William St. Qnge, John Eddy and Addison Fuller. i-F? fs President - Noel Wright Secretary - Edward Thackery Treasurer - - lVIr.
