I' 's I Nags- A-48 THE GREEN OASIS HE SATIN velvet of the desert mght had just descended encompasslng the Infinite stretches of burnmg sands ln tts cool embrace On the edge of the green oasls a lone watcher squatted the ethereal spirals of smoke from his hookah mmglmg ln the a1r already pregnant w1th the fragrance of scarlet flowers One by one the pale stars flamed mto belng IH the smoky ether overhead and the blood red desert moon rose torrld agamst a blue night bamshlng the more sombre shadows untll every curxe of golden sand every rock and tafaso bush was framed in a nucleus of moonshme Suddenly forty slx dark sll houttes were cut agalnst the glamorous drop curtaln of the mght' forty six camels and thelr rlders Through the slftlng gold dust of the moon beams they come threadmg thelr way between the blurred sand dunes stralght to the green oasxs Where the first palms stretched out tenaclous roots to grasp a feeble suste nance from the ar1d desert the rlders a band of m1sty robed Hgures dxsmounted tethered thexr camels and came lnto the presence of the lone watcher Solemnly they gave thexr greetmg and lmmoblle of features squatted 1n a c1rcle and ac cepted the proffered hookah of the watcher Salamoune ale1koum1 Esseleme Ekhwan C Peace be unto you brothers D the watcher lntoned gravely has thy Journey been profitable? The leader of the band placed a pmch of tobacco m the hookah and mhaled deeply before replying ln a sonorous tone of volce Our journey has indeed been blessed by Allah the glver of all good We have a r1ch cargo of knowl edge dates gathered along the Wllldlllg caravan trall that leads from AZZlg1g to the green oasls Once out of AZZlg1g we tramed our camels for the race known as hockey for the fourth class of the Senusu who reslded at Tachod had challenged us to compete wlth them After an arduous Journey we arrxved at Tachod and were honorably defeated by our rlvals Now onward agam we turned our camels heads whlle mxsfortune turned IIS ev1l eye upon us The water was gone from our glrbas our famlshed beasts stumbled over the desolate wastes when llke a golden beacon sh1n1ng IH the dlstance we spxed the O3SlS of Arr sometlmes called Chrxstmas Here we rested ln langorous luxury untxl, refreshed and exuberant, we agam rode lnto the somnolent heart of the desert 'T1s well sald that calm forbodes the storm for scarce had we ventured from Anr when a band of truculent Touarages swept upon us and demanded tr1bute of knowledge dates These barbarxans or exams by whlch names they are sometlmes known sadly dlsabled those of our band who had few dates but on the whole we escaped them well and Jolned a caravan of the Sensun gomg north Wlth these people we engaged m many contests of skxll havmg .34 48 is-.
