SR e ' M owefs After a short rest at Bnology we contmued our journey with much vlgor and enthusrasm It dld not take us long to arrxve at French Cnty whlch was strongly fortlfied wxth an enormous wall Seelng that we had to gam this land also and reahzxng that we were larger ln number the captaln ordered us to surround If and to charge when told Boom' the French had fired and after recervmg the srgnal our men fired ln return Thus d1d we fight for three dreary months without being able to break through the wall At the end of thls perlod we were fatlgued and were on the polnt of gxvlng up when we notlced the mam gates slowly open mg A large over dressed Gentleman appeared and addressxng the captaln sard Caprtalne nous nous rendons parce que nous voyons que nous sommes plus farbles Serons amls But slnce our captain could not fully understand the Frenchman s talk Frances Rasm was ordered to lnterpret If Thus the c1ty came under our control and trlumphantly we passed 1nto rt but were drsappolnted to hear that part of our army had gone ahead to capture Spanish Whxle ln French clty Catherme Lawlor Ann Sheehan Jullet Moore Helen Magness and Olga Cook were lnvlted to act IH a French drama and slnce they were so well versed ln the language they splendldly played thelr part In the meantlme Catherlne Carroll Helen Carroll Cele Baker Concetta Scalco and Loretto Convery arrived at Spamsh CIIY and ravaging everythng and capturlng every lnhabltant as they entered soon had the cxty under therr control wlthout very much trouble These darlng ravagers placed at the mam entrance of the c1ty a slgn whnch read as follows Esta Crudad Es Del Ejerclto Jumor They then jomed the larger portxon of the army which was then nearlng Math Brldge The captaln surmlsxng the weakness of the brldge sent ahead Mary Ahern Anne Street Mary Kennedy and Mary Ellen H1ll to test IIS endurance Very cautlously yet wlllmgly these brave men advanced walked to the middle and then stopped Crash ' wrth a loud nolse the brldge broke and wlth If fell our men However these soldlers were excellent swlmmers and wxthout much difficulty qulckly came back Helen Smith Clalre Buettner Emlly Shannon Isobel Runge Constance Judge Margaret Houchens and Carolyn Meyer were ordered to bulld another bridge Wlfh a steel foundatlon It dld not take our well experlenced men long to complete the1r work and shortly afterward the army trlumphantly crossed the Sea of Health and found themselves on the Senlor Shore Before our enterlng the malnland Captaxn Smith declared a three months vacatlon at the seashore +:l45F' J, A ll All e I ...,. - A' -a ml, , N- ee- Qs: 553215 -Q 'g n' 1e ,, q1'aivi:l lee-T JU W' X. uf' ' 1 U . , . 'l l Qeldowefs BEE ISLAND FTER a perllous trlp through C Bay the large Junror army of ambmous soldlers led by Captam Loretto Smlth safely entered Rellglon Rlver Smce thls raver at trmes was very rough and threatemng we had to undergo many hardshrps but under the keen and skrllful management of Capta1n Smlth of Helen Bloomqurst first mate of Helen Casey second mate and of Ann Edelen the helmsman we conquered all the drfficultres and were soon safely anchormg at the shore of Englrsh the capltal of Bee Island As soon as the Jumor army consxstmg of forty seven fearless soldiers had encamped a message came from the well knovs n and much beloved English ruler lmplorrng ald to settle the turbulent state of affaxrs ln the clty the riot having been caused by the poets and wrrters of the elghteenth century To quell thls verbal uproar a few firm and brlght students were needed and so ln complrance wrth the rulers wlshes Captam Smlth sent Margaret Gunther Madellne Jones Carollne Janney and Frances Koontz to settle the matter Wrth th1s excellent squad English was conquered and became our possessxon And so wrth Engllsh and Rellglon safely rn our hands we ventured fur ther determlned to become masters of the Island Our next stop was Mount Latln Alas' here we were drvrded Ellzabeth McCosker I-Ielen Toth Mar garet I-Iouchens Mary Olrver Trlce Margaret Templeman Anne Stork and Mary W1lklHS very ambmous and eager to conquer thus enormous mountaln undertook the task of cllmblng over lt the larger portlon of Junror army marched along the path whrch led around the base of the mountaln After bexng severely brulsed and badly hurt our heroes successfully attalned the summrt and there espled the master of the mount the great grant Crcero Immedlately our brave soldlers pounced upon hrm and after a severe battle at last overpowered h1m and puttlng hrm 1n chams took hlm along wlth them From there the march was resumed and the whole reglment of Junior men rejorclng at thelr success were filled wlth enthusiasm and hoped to secure more ground Wlth thls hlgh arm ln mmd the army cheerfully marched on heedless of commg danger unt1l nearmg Bxology Crty they drscovered thelr lack of food and the strangeness of the crty It was very small and made up mostly of a large forest mhabrted by strange anrmals and rnsects many odd looklng flowers and a few burly men Our captaln Loretto Smrth commanded Kitty Helsner Anna Brewster Evelyn Lesko Betty Lyons Rose Chfford and Margaret Ryan to get the neces sary requ1rements On thenr may they were astonished to see runnrng towards them a horrid lookxng man wlth a message saymg that the cxty wxllrngly sur rendered and wrshmg to maxntaln peace and order mvnted our men to remam m the c1ty as long as they deslred Thus without a struggle we came into possesslon of thus strange clty H449 Wi.
