This statement exemplifies one of the fundamental aspects of science: that new discoveries are built upon the careful work of earlier pioneers. The scientists of the future, whatever their field may be, will strive to ad- vance the work of their predecessors. Students appreciate the science of numbers The goal of mathematics at Notre Dame has been in previous years, to give students a better understanding of our world through knowledge of the precise mathematical relationships which govern it. This year, without detracting from the original goal, Notre Dame has included math courses designed for the business- oriented student. But whether for science or business, the science of numbers continued to amaze, discipline, and occasionally irk the students of Notre Dame.
