Notre Dame has always been noted for its strength in baseball, but the 1971 ballclub proved to be far and away the best in the schoo1's history, winning the C. I. F. S,S. Championship and finishing with a record of 21-7. A rookie coach QMike Barnesy and a team with only two senior starters QMarvi.n Cobb and Grant Evensonj didn't figure to attract too much attention, but as the season progressed, the Titans made believers out of everybody they faced, winning 19 of their last 22 games. The junior studded Titans were paced by the spectacular hurling of ace Iefthander Larry Turner, the big bats of Marvin Cobb, Bob Lyons, and John Darsow, and the fine clutch performances of Dave Eiser, Lou Santilla, George Schulte, Mike Cobb and Daron Smith. N.D. , overshadowed in print during the season by the record breaking exploits of Norte Vista's Braves, were out to prove something to a few people. Prove something they did, as they swept through the Arrowhead League with a 12-2 record, then took four straight games in the C,I. F. Playoffs to bring the school its second C.I. F. TRACK The Arrowhead League champion track team started the 1972 season with an optimistic outlook. The team had a total of 13 meets and returning lettermen includ- ed Kurt Brees, Mike Flaherty, Bruce Hill, Mike Van Voorst, Mike Erickson, Richard Bickel, and Mike Wathen. The squad was coached by Steve Harris, who hoped to lead the Titans to another Arrowhead crown.
