We were 'old hands at attending Federation meetings but that year the big convention was held in Oakland a fact which distressed many of us as we hated to bother with one of those hick towns Along with our Sophomore status came the mighty privilege of attend ing N D s dances and we were known for our great response to many of them Still fresh in our minds IS the memory of our first Student Body Dance Mardi Gras We were really in the lime light when we won the contest for Mission Day Queen with our candidate Bev Reynolds The funniest thing that happened that year was the near catastrophe in the World His tory class when Mary Dean while nonchalantly chewing on a button started laughing at some witty remark Suddenly panic was rampant in the class and dire pleas for help were heard from Mary amid the confusion Fortunately Mary did not completely swallow the button and it was coaxed out after many vigorous slaps and much assistance Thank goodness we all lived through that second year in spite of all the Flat F warn ings and the many detentions for late comers Do not misunderstand us we loved every minute of it The Junior year ah we were the mighty Juniors upper classmen at last' With the Junior year we welcomed Mercy Baca Gloria T1naya and Eileen O Neil three lovely young ladies to grace our third year with their talents Speaking of talents we are remind ed of Josephine Mejia whose performance on the basketball court was sensational In the Junior year we reached the height 1n our capacity for class spirit with the new system of pennant awards for meritorious class action We walked off with nine that year We also won the contest for Mission Day Queen again with pretty Mercy Baca And 1n the field of dramatlcs will anybody ever forget Tish especially a certain scene dresses and old beaus' The topic of discussion that year was as you all know Emmett' Our cla s well remembers the day that Sister Roberta Julie made us write that 500 word composition on the subject As a result of our zesty class spirit the Legion of Mary was started that year We also won a pennant for the most cleverly decorated room during the pre Christmas weeks With the end of the year came a 'crown1ng tribute to the Seniors our Junior Sen ior Dinner Our theme was the Coronation for that was the Coronation Year As the year came to a close and the Seniors wept we Joyfully donned our Senior caps and dreamed of a future and final year within the Portals of N D At last that long awaited year had come' We were SENIORS' The new members who completed this class of '54 were Doretta Bistor with her friends Doris Schegg Jos ephine Welch Dixie Bender and pretty Diana Higgins who will be known for many years to come as J D As we look back on this happy year foremost in our minds 15 the Senior Consecration to the Sacred Heart in Mission Dolores Basilica The Mar1an Year also gave us the d1st inction of being the only class in the history of Notre Dame to be Called The Marian Sen 1ors Our dramatic talents were displayed when we gave the Senior Play Our Hearts Were Young and Gay The prom at the Fairmont Hotel was to all of us the lovel1est night of the year Naturally in our Sen1or year as in all our other years at Notre Dame w were noted for doing many crazy things An example of this is the day when June Blut carried a typewriter out of the room when only she was supposed to go out By the end of the year we were all well acquainted with our class teacher Sister Francis Loretto and with the word responsibility This is the summary of four happy years at Notre Dame As we bid goodbye to the dear Sisters and leave through the Portals of N D we will go our different ways But I am sure we'll recall forevermore our precious CLASS OF'54 Arlene Thomas Class Historian , H . , . . . l . , . . , . ll ' - ll ' ' ' ' - ' ! . a n' I ' . . . . . ,, .
