California v yy ll A Z' ' Q4 il vt ,wg Q ' FOREWORD l-IE imaginative Freshman avidly reads a story oi knight- hood with an eye to the action. For a few hours he rides forth with the armored hero to accept all challenges to mortal combat. l-le closes the book reluctantly, unhappy to leave an exciting age which he believes to be completely removed from his everyday lite. The educated Senior, on the other hand, tinds that he has gradually learned to look beyond the action to the ideals Which prompted the daring deeds oi old. l-le discovers a personal in- spiration to modern-day chivalry in the lqnightly characters oi medieval literature. Knights in Battle Colette gains first down before Colarossi scoots around end and Who's got that ball, anyway? stopped by Loyola man. meets the Saints. Page 63 . N .. -YWGYVFNN 7 it - , .35 , Anxious eyes on the sidelines N. D. 33 Harvard 6 ln its first home game COctober l7J the Knights baffled its Coldwater Canyon neighbors by scoring in every frame. But not until the Har- vard team took 6 in the opening playl Ed Colarossi scored on fine long runs, Bob Moretti on five plays, and Les Landy, a dependable right-half, on the stamina of the line. N. D. 7 Loyola 13 Although an official loss, the October 24th Notre Dame-Loyola game was most satisfying. After the Cubs gathered 6 points in the first quarter, the restless Knights charged in the second, led by Ed Colarossi, who scored from the 8-yard line. Dick Colette boosted the score to 7. Nip and tuck play, with costly penalties all around, marked the last half. An intercepted N. D. pass led the Cubs to their l3 points. The final gun found the Knights marching on. N. D. 6 St. Anthony 6 The Long Beach Saints tfinal Catholic League winners? came up to the Valley on November l with a 33-U N. D. pelt of last season only to be stymied 6-6 by the underdogs. into the fourth at O-U, the two Holy Cross Brothers' teams final- ly each gave in for 6 points with spirited reluctance. Knight Bill Vaughan threw a spiril- ing pass to Pete Vogelsang for a score. Pronto, the Saints scored too. N. D. 0 Cathedral 26 Saturday, November 8, was indeed the loneliest night in the week. The potent Phantoms from Cathedral scored in every quarter even though the Knights-especially Bamos and Bosen- berger, Vaughan and Safarik, Gurasich and Landy--fought with admirable determination until the final gun. Moral: Don't tangle with the Saints and the Phantoms on successive week- ends. N. D. 12 Mt. Cannel 13 The November l5th Homecoming Game with Mt. Carmel, which marked the end of the foot- ball season and the final game for 19 Seniors, ended in a note of promise for '53 if not in vic- tory for '52. Dick Colette ran in the second for 65 the opponents immediately topped this with 7. ln the fourth, Mt. Carmel added 6 morep the Knights immediately matched this when Bill Vaughan passed 30 yards to Don Dorrell. So ended the l952 football season for Coach Duffy Lewis' Knights of Notre Dame. Eternal vigilance alone is the price that you pay for that liberty and there devolves upon every citizen who believes in that Declaration and in the Constitution . . . to conduct himself with that regard for his neighbor that his neighbor as well as himself may have the full enioyment of the bless- ings of liberty that grow from a free republic. -Alfred E.
