1988 ARCHIVE NORWICH HIGH SCHOOL MIDLAND DRIVE NORWICH, NEW YORK CHANGE is constant which surrounds us. It can consist of something as simple as the weather, which is out of our control, or be self imposed, as when we change our clothing or get a buzz cut. School and the fall bring changes. Fall, which is the season often associated with death and hibernation, is the time for change and renewal for students. Each fall brings a new teacher, a new class, new responsibilities and new activities. Just as the people surrounding us change from year to year, so did this building change. Some changes were small, band uniforms, honor passes, study halls for Freshmen. Others are large, such as the current renovations on our school. And yet, in spite of the changes, we cope, we survive and hopefully we triumph. CANDIDS 3 DEDICATION “To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but only believe.” In four short years it is difficult to assess what anyone has accomplished. The person we honor with this dedication has shown through her actions her belief in the students here at Norwich High School. As members of the class of 1988, we have witnessed many acts of kindness, seen the dream and been part of the plan. Considering the active roles she fills: Class Advisor, patient Teacher, and former Coach, it is with great pride and gratitude that we dedicate this 1988 Archive to Mrs. Toni DeMott. i 4 DEDICATION Who said the food here wasn't good? Spies, Jr. Ill, from South Africa America is the best thing that ever happened to me. I’m glad that I have a school like this to help me enjoy it. Thanks a lot! Exchange Student Johanna Aaltonen, from Finland Hi, my name is Johanna Aaltonen and I’m 17 years old. I come from Finland. Besides Finnish I speak English, Swedish and some German. The most interesting thing I've noticed here are the people. Here in the G.S. people are more open than in Scandinavia and it’s easy to make friends. Many people say Hi even if I’ve never talked with them. This year has been full of sports to me. I played varsity soccer and volleyball. Now, I’m looking forward to the track season. The team spirit has been really great, I have had a wonderful time. School is not difficult and time passes so fast, that pretty soon it’s time to go back home. Good-byes are going to be hard. Thank you Norwich High School for a great time! 57 STUDENT ATHLETIC COUNCIL Row 1: Joe Spence, Kelly James, Lisa McAvoy, Hope Golden, Jill Siox, Marcy Snyder, Stephanie Dain. The editors and staff of the 1987-88 Archive would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of the time and effort you have put into our book. You were always there with suggestions, creative ideas, and much needed assistance. At the same time you let us work with our own ideas and make most of the big decisions. We frustrated you, but we also made you laugh. This is your last year of running Archive as an extra-curricular activity. Your knowledge and understanding will be missed, but it will also be helpful in getting this new class started. Thank you for being there for us, working with us, and for helping to make this book memorable for everyone. We hope we made your last year great. The 1987-88 Archive Staff P.S. It was a night of handsome princes and beautiful queens. The couples danced under a midnight blue sky within the flagstone walls and courtyards. All in attendance were awed as they entered the glorious castle made of sturdy stone walls and turrets. Outside the magical castle lay a drawbridge, the only way in or out of the ball! Work on the prom began early in December of ’86. Class officers Steve Preuss, Jason Windsor, Amy Canto and Mary Ann DiStefano began planning the various details with the help of Miss Andrea Macura, the class advisor. The night of the Prom was one of happiness, surprise, nervousness, and most of all anxiousness to find out who the king and queen would be. All of the chaperons were dressed in the style of the medieval period, from soldiers and princes to ladies in waiting and a wizard. Even the band played the part dressing as medieval musicians. And a won- derfully crafted castle cake” was a refreshing treat, as was the punch, from authentic wine casks. As the time of the crowning drew near, castle became very restless. Finally, it was time to introduce all of the juniors and their dates. After this, the announcement of the King and Queen and their court of Princes and Princesses. The King was Joe Yacano, and the Queen was Mary Long. The honorable members of their court were: 1st Prince and Princess — Steve Preuss and Cressy Dixon; 2nd Prince and Princess — Jason Windsor and Kim Follett; 3rd Prince and Princess — Marty Jacobi and Amy Canto; 4th Prince and Princess — Terry McCumiskey and Kristen Tronolone. The Prom of 1987 proved to be one of the best proms held in recent Norwich history. This is a tribute to the elegant class of 1988. 125 JUNGLE Homecoming Parade Football Float Sophomore Float, 3rd Place 126 HOMECOMING Junior Float, 1st Place Senior Float, 2nd Place JIVE October 3, 1988 Court Thera Rivenburg — Queen, escorted by Steve Neigut Amy Canto — second runner-up. escorted by Steve Preuss Cressy Dixon — first runner-up, escorted by Jamie Frank Homecoming 1988 began early on Octo- ber 3rd with the parade down Broad Street. Also in that year President Reagan began his second term; it was also an Olympic year. Now it is 1988. This former freshman class will soon leave the secure halls of NHS and embark on the unpredictable journey of life. In 1988 many things are happening, and changing. It is a dynamic year. It is the year of the 22nd Olympiad, also President Reagan, the oldest president, is ending his tenure. Our own Principal, Dr. Paul Preuss, is leaving NHS after 25 years. The most obvious change is the construction going on in and around the school. New teach- ers administrators have been added to the evergrowing faculty over our stay in this building. An important change is the improvement of school climate and school spirit. NHS is a more fun place to be than it once was. The change in our lives during the past four years has been tremendous. There will be many changes in our lives in the years to come. We, the editors, hope that this Archive has reflected the theme of change. Best of luck to all in the future! Little did the world expect that this year would bring onto the earth a new generation of children ready to change the world! Of course we weren’t very formidable at first. Molding our minds was an easy task for our lives revolved around naps, snacks and crayons. As we grew, we started to take shape. Whether one went to Perry Browne with its Flintstone type dwellings (now abandoned for the great wooden fortress that has been constructed), Gibson with its red light in the cafeteria and endless games of cooties”, or Saint Paul’s with the frequent Iroquois Village projects and eventful games of kill the guy”, we all pretty much did the same thing — progressed towards adolescence. With Mr. Paul as our advisor we sold cheese and sausage with a passion to satisfy our money hungry desires and our dreams for our future at Norwich High School. Some of us will go to work, college, or trade school, but basically we’ve all done the same thing: WE’VE GROWN GP!!! Hopefully, the future will bring us happiness and success. Whatever it holds, let us hope together that we will not lose touch with the special friends who shared our trials and tribulations during this brief time here in Norwich High School. This is the end of our class history and the beginning of new and different experiences for all of us . . . Sean M. Unlike the Prom, this was a time for everyone to let it all hang out. Attire consisted of the everpopular sweats and holey jeans, topped off with sweatshirts, flannel shirts and yellow construction hats. As preparations began, questions arose concerning the theme. While discussing the various options, the sound effects of hammers, drills, and saws turned our attention to the condition of the cafeteria. Our decision became evident. Constriction was the only logical theme. Committees were set up to help the chair- men balance out the work load. The Scav- enger Committee, which was the far most essential, was headed by Zack Proskine. Other Committee Chairmen were Lucille Elia, Re- freshments; Wendy Wright, Tickets; and Ka- ren O’Neil, Publicity. Entertainment was pro- vided by Sensational Sound! Preceding the evening was an afternoon of searching through abandoned corridors and construction filled wings for scraps of con- struction to decorate the cafeteria. At 9:00 PM people began filling in under- neath the scaffolding. After a few hours of competitive twisting it was time for the two chairmen, Katie Fern and Sarah Andrews, to announce the Foreman and Forewoman. After a few unsuccessful drawings, Sea Fryover and Amy Canto stepped hesitantly forward to re- ceive their own yellow construction hats. The festivities ended at 1:00 AM. 176 SENIOR DIRECTORY KATHRYN A'HEARN JOHANNA AALTONEN JOSU Rotary Interact, Varsity Soccer.
