CLASS HISTORY N September 1933 the illustrious class of 1937 entered- Norwich f-ligh, The upperclassmen were horrified at the thoughts of what Would become of their school at the hands of this small army of children in lcniclcers and short dresses. in due time they managed to learn the numbers on the doors and conducted themselves to their classes in safety. Gccasionally something extraordinary happened but they sur- prised their elders by behaving very well. Under the guidance of Mrs, Powers their first year passed without mishap and in the spring of that year they showed their outstanding intelligence by electing Miss Stewart for their advisor. The officers for the first year were: president, Alice Scott, Vice President, franlc Gustafson, Secretary, Kathryn Natoli, and Treasurer, Clarence Barnes. ln the fall of their Sophomore year they elected the following officers: President, Alice Scott, Vice President, Donald Champaign, Secretary, Patricia Stewart, and Treasurer, Clarence Barnes. The second year passed quite normally and in the spring the class spon- sored a benefit movie entitled HThe lron Dulcen starring George Arliss. ln their first benefit they proved their ability to worlc hard and they made one hundred and twelve dollars, which was the top amount at that time. ln their Junior year, Carlton Clarlce was elected to steer the HShip of State and his very capable crew consisted of Anne Bur- chard, Vice President, Mary Jane Aldcorn, Secretary, and Edward Adwards, Treasurer. The same year they conducted a magazine sale. The class was divided into two teams, the Army and the Navy. As the Navy refused to be sunlc they were given a party by the losing Army. From then on the entire class made preparations for the Junior Prom. This Prom was undoubtedly the most stupendous event ever attended in Norwich f-iigh. The auditorium was decorated to re- semble a flower garden, even including a fountain and a pool. The ceiling was most unique, not omitting a surprisingly realistic moon. Spiegle Willcox and his orchestra provided the music and the class of T936 was given an edifying send-off. Thoroughly recovered from their strenuous Junior year the class of 1937 returned in September as peppy as they had been in their Freshman year. They sponsored a benefit movie Dodsworth and in January they elected the officers who were to talce them down the last stretch. Francis Mclnerney was elected President, Ruth Benedict, Vice President, Marion Edwards, Secretary, and Bob McMann, Treasurer. Their last activity was preparing the year boolc and their last thought is to thanlc Miss Stewart, Mr. Hogue and the faculty for helping them through four happy years. FOOTBALL I-IE 1936 football team, under the able leadership ol Captain Salvatore Ulootsi' Mira- bito, enjoyeda successful season, winning live games out ol a hard nine game schedule. Much credit is due to Coach Beyer lor moulding a winning team with only seven lettermen lrom last yearis team as a nucleus. Undoubtedly, the most outstanding events ol the 1936 season were the Qneonta and Kingston games. Qneonta invaded the Alumni Field with the best team ever to represent that school. lhey were previously unbeaten and untied, but they were rudely upset by a deter- mined Purple and White squad to the tune ol 'I3-O. Later in the season Norwich journeyed to Kingston and handed them a 6-O deleat. The letter men lor the 1936 season were, Salvatore lVlirabito, Captain, Burton Ralmatier, Captain-Elect, Carlton Clarlce, Angelo Zeino, James Rotundo, Jack Lee, Joseph Merlino, Ver- non Robertson, Elmo Robertson, Thomas Byrne, Thomas Nlirabito, Stanley Burdnell, Franlq Was- sung, Jr,, Walter Qdenlcirchen, Leland Morris, John Distelano, and Leroy phillips, Manager. 1936 Record Norwich O Alumni 7 Norwich 3Q l'lamilton O Norwich 6 Llnion Endicott Q6 Norwich 59 Little Falls O Norwich O Johnson City 6 Norwich 13 Qneonta O Norwich O Binghamton 13 Norwich 39 Cortland 6 Norwich 6 Kingston O 148 58 BASKETBALL NORWICH l'ligh Schoolis 1936-1937 baslcetball team Finished the season with Five vic- tories against Fifteen defeats. Several games were lost by two or three points and hard luck dogged the team all year. This year the team was in the western hall of the Southern Tier League, which is composed of Binghamton, Johnson City, Qneonta and Norwich. The schedule was slightly different from last year. Each team in the Western hall played the other three teams twice and also two of the teams in the Eastern half twice. Although the Purple and White Finished last, they showed a marlced improvement over last year's team. The outstanding league games were the two Qneonta games and the second Johnson City game. ln the Qneonta game, played at Norwich, the Purple was nosed out QB-Q7 in a hard- fought contest. Later, Norwich invaded Oneonta and lost another heart-brealcer by an 18-16 score. The Norwich team rose to its greatest heights in the Johnson City game played here. Johnson City came here rated as one ol the outstanding teams in the league and they were out to roll up a big score. But a Fighting Purple team played them to a standstill For over three- quarters and only in the Final seconds did Johnson City manage to put the game on ice, winning by a Q9-Q1 score.
