Some are artists, some are actors, some are politicians. There are athletes and teachers, chemists and home planners. Norwalk High has its own 1,900 individuals, each trying to be himself. Each strives to find his own personal method of expressing his feelings to others. And each is witnessing the other 1,899 doing the same. We, of the EL LANCERO staff, have tried to express the feelings of the entire sutdent body, faculty, and administration in a pictorial history of the 1968-69 school year. We have tried to include every form of expression that any individual has attempted. We have tried to stress the importance of being oneself, of having a time for expression. i' bn.. p -.... as ibn-.MMM ., K , ,- W .er l' if JPY TABLE OF CON'I'ENTS Activities ,,,,,,,, Clubs ............ Senate and S. B. Cabinet plan progressive year The Norwalk Senate and the Student Body Cabinet have worked hard to make the 1968-69 school year successful. The Student Body Cabinet, representative of the entire Student Body, worked hard to make this year Norwalk's best. They received help and encouragement from their advisor, Mr. Korzen. Striving to make this year better than past years, the Senate worked with the Cabinet and Mr. Beckett to alleviate the problem of keeping the campus clean. Through their efforts and others, trees were planted in the snack area. The Senate, presided over by Patty Tsubokawa, passed a bill lowering the requirements for a Senator, but the bill was vetoed by the Cabinet. ,ci Christine DeMendoza Sue Maggeth Girls' League President Secretary Vice President President Patty Tsubokawa Luis Albidrez President- Luis Albidrez Vice-President- Patty Tsubokawa Secretary- Sue Masseth Treasurer- John Eshom Historian- Sharon Popp Director of Activities- Pat Blaesser Girls' League President Christine DeMendoza Senior President- Doug Roy Junior President- Chuck Silverthorne Sophomore President- Neal Sanborn Freshman President- Denise Hidalgo Treasurer Historian John Eshom Sharon Popp . -, ,' -vjfa. ,,,.' Tense, but filled with excitement, each princess circled the track before the half- time ceremonies. Each was nervous but radiant with happiness. The long pause became almost an eternity before Lynne Bottema was named Homecoming Queen 1968. A crown, a bouquet, and the traditional kiss from S. B. Fifty copies are set aside to be made into bound issues. Some of these are given to VOICE staff members and others are sold on a first-come first-serve basis to any student. Copies are also put in the permanent files in the office. Several copies of the VOICE go into circulation with other schools. When the VOICE staff receives an issue from another school, the staff sends them a copy of the VOICE in return. This enables the schools to keep in touch with each other and to get new ideas for layouts, articles, etc. At snack students all over NHS are reading a copy of the popular VOICE. Yes, anyone for a sleighride because the theme of this year's Christmas Dance, sponsored by Girls' League, was A Moonlight Sleighride. Soft lights and a canopy of flowing streamers changed the austere multipurpose room into an enchanting room filled with the atmosphere created by the Ballistics. Pervaded by the spirit of Christmas, the dance took on a new tone as the beautifully wrapped presents, donations for the children at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, were displayed by the stage in a standard sized sleigh drawn by one ambitious reindeer. Girls' Glee consists of girls only, who are interested in singing. A Cappella Choir is the mixed chorus on campus. Audition is required. Madrigals is the most selective singing group on campus. Audition is required, and membership is limited. This group decides within itself the costumes to be worn for performances. Madrigals were popular during the Middle Ages. The Madrigals on campus are patterned from those ancient groups. It is a group met together to sing for pleasure and entertainment. Throughout the year each group attends a festival, attended by several groups from the area. This year Norwalk for the first time is combining efforts with LaMirada High. SPECIAL EDUCATION AND MILITARY SCIENCE Special education classes are for the students who are not able to take advantage of the regular curriculum at NHS. The students are encouraged to stay in school and learn at a slower pace. As a result, they are able to graduate with their class. The Military Science course, or Cal Cadets, is to introduce young men to the armed services. The NHS 1968-69 rifle team was top rated. This year NHS has a new library. It was remodeled and refurbished after last year's fire. This included a new color scheme and a conference room being added. The library also has three new magazines, two sociological and one psychological. The librarian, Mrs. Nancy Coburn, meets once a month with an organization called Young Adult Reviewers. Many books were recommended there and, in turn, were added to the library. Twelve hundred new books were added this year bringing the total to 12,500 books, making the NHS library the largest in the district. The people on this page all contribute to making the school run more smoothly. Mrs. Janet Fleshner, the lady in the cage, keeps the Girls' P. E. equipment in top shape. It is all too apparent in our country. However, changes cannot be adequately made without compromise among the radicals, the conservatives, and those who stand between. Many people are so engrossed with trivial details of living that they are oblivious to and without understanding for those who want more than mere existence. The lack of tolerance on both sides creates a greater gap in understanding. Individuals must grasp that they cannot change the establishment alone, and the establishment must realize that each individual needs the right to express himself in his own way. The staff oi the 1968-69 EL LANCERO has tried to include both the forms of new expression and the set standards of Norwalk High in this year's annual. Each has its good and bad, each must try to have tolerance for the other, and each must expect further change in the form of continually new expression.
